Veronica's POV
Lachlan drove me to Edgar's place—a countryside hospital where we were supposed to meet Ryan.
"How's Edgar holding up?" I asked Ryan the moment I spotted him, worry creeping into my voice.
"He's in the ward," Ryan said, gesturing for Lachlan and me to follow him down the sterile corridor.
The sight that greeted me when we stepped into the room made my stomach lurch. Edgar lay motionless on the hospital bed, his neck marked with violent purple bruises that looked like a grotesque necklace.
Ryan filled us in on what had happened. "Someone tried to strangle him to death when I found Edgar. Thank God I got there in time, but the damage was already done. His throat's crushed, vocal cords destroyed. Even if he pulls through, he'll never speak again."
The information hit me like a punch to the gut. Who the hell keeps sabotaging my search for answers about Mom's ashes?
"Did you get a good look at whoever did this? Notice anything that might help us?" I pressed Ryan.
