Veronica's POV
I quickly jerked my hand away from Leonardo's grip and guided his fingers to our son's small palm instead. "This is your son's hand."
"Oh," he murmured, his large hand wrapping around Daniel's tiny fingers, and I could see the visible relief wash over his features as he held his child close.
I knew if something terrible had happened to Daniel tonight, Leonardo would've carried that guilt forever. What kind of father would he think himself to be if he couldn't even keep his only son safe? How would he face Trish when she returned?
After several moments of silence, Leonardo's voice came out gentler than I'd ever heard it. "Thank you for saving Daniel tonight."
This was the first time he'd ever genuinely thanked me for anything. He was acknowledging that I'd spotted the flames in time and rescued his son.
"Don't mention it," I said with a shrug. "He's my son too. Of course I'd save my own child."
