Ximena's POV
The harsh afternoon sunlight stabbed through my bedroom as Glenda ripped open the curtains with zero mercy. I let out a pathetic whimper and buried my face deeper into my pillow.
"Go away," I mumbled into the fabric. "I'm dead. Leave me to decompose in peace."
"It's past two o'clock, Ximena." Glenda's voice carried that particular blend of exasperation and worry that only a best friend could master. "You've been wallowing in this cave since you got home last night. If I don't drag you out now, you'll still be here rotting when classes start Monday morning."
She yanked my comforter away before I could stop her. The sudden exposure to light and air made me feel naked and vulnerable.
"I said go away." I curled into the smallest ball possible, wrapping my arms around my knees.
Glenda stood above me like some kind of intervention warrior in her torn denim and oversized sweatshirt. Her arms crossed over her chest as she stared me down.
