Precautions in advance? I wondered silently.
Against what exactly?
To keep me from developing a taste for blood and spiraling out of control? Or maybe to stop me from going on some killing rampage that would be impossible to cover up?
I flashed Harold a small smile but kept quiet, acting like his underlying message went right over my head.
Lucas, who lived for stirring up trouble, jumped in. "Hey Phoebe, cut Harold some slack here. You're one of eight instructors at that famous HDA Jackson Mercenary Special Operations Base. Harold's... well, he's terrified!"
Alan cleared his throat softly, silently warning Lucas to tone down the obvious troublemaking before Harold made them both regret it.
Harold wasn't someone who let things slide.
Lucas peeked at Harold. Seeing that smile playing on his lips and no sign of anger, Lucas got bolder. "Right, Harold?
I'm just looking out for you and Phoebe here, being a good friend."
