Phoebe's POV
Silence stretched across the phone line, as though Chad carried some crushing burden he couldn't voice.
His hesitation was answer enough. I let out a bitter laugh. "Mr. Calvin, staying quiet won't stop me from uncovering the horrible things you all did."
The threat hung in the air, raw and undisguised.
What choice did Chad have? He'd already heard whispers about how dangerous I'd become. All he could do was take whatever I threw at him.
His sigh crackled through the speaker. "Phoebe... what we did back then, we had our circumstances."
"Circumstances?" My laugh turned sharper, colder. "I don't give a damn about your circumstances. Why did my mother have to die for them?"
He had no response to that.
Because what was the point? What did their precious circumstances matter to Natalie? What did they matter to me?
Yet they'd destroyed an innocent woman and a defenseless child anyway, using every dirty trick in the book.
