But offering them that escape route turned out to be a mistake. My gesture put Chad and Brian in an impossible position, torn between accepting and declining.
Brian broke the silence first. "Harold, you understand who we are. Our only skill now is preventing our families from crumbling."
"So if it doesn't compromise your values, any tiny detail you could share would help us!"
"Exactly!" Chad added quickly. "We didn't want to come here, but we had no choice. Given our age and how well we've always treated both of you, couldn't you grant us this one favor?"
Both men looked ready to cry, staring at Harold and me with desperate, frantic eyes.
"Mr. Calvin, Mr. Lukas, are you attempting to guilt trip me by painting yourselves as victims?"
I realized I couldn't let Harold keep protecting me. I guided him aside, settled him into a chair, and placed a coffee cup in his hands, giving him a front-row seat to the performance.
