Chapter 23 - Knighthood

(Third Person POV)

"You come to this Tourney uninvited, and you cheat your way to victory?" Tywin said with anger, "I will not have this. Seize him at once!!"

Ellion smiled as his horse shifted, "Cheat?" He said, "No. I did not cheat, I simply won through my sheer skill. Although, this is quite different from real battle. My skills at that are far superior. After all, I am the one who cleared the land off scum."

Tywin walked down the steps in a fit of rage, "Seize him now!" He shouted, "I want him detained, now!!"

"You will do no such thing." The King spoke up, a slight smile on his face

Everyone looked as King Aerys walked down the steps and reached the last floor of the stands, looking at Ellion. He had a curious look on his face, as if he was examining his appearance.

"Your Grace, this boy is but a bastard." Tywin said, "An insult to you and House Targaryen. To have a bastard who isn't a knight win a Tourney held in your son's honor, this is-"

"A Bastard?" Aerys said, "The one who dismounted my son and my best Knight? That is a bastard? Hm, red hair.....are you a Tully bastard, boy?"

Ellion looked at him and bowed his head slightly, "Your Grace, I am a Bastard." He said, "I am Ellion Rivers, but I do not know who my Father is."

"But seeing that your name is Rivers, then you must be a highborn bastard." Aerys said, "Rivers. I did hear that Lord Tywin's sister had a sworn blade named Rivers. I did not think he would be a Tully Bastard."

Genna shifted in her feet, fanning herself, but said nothing. Aerys merely glanced at her, his eyes carefully scanning her reaction to this.

"It is a long story, Your Grace." Tywin said, "This boy ignored my command to not show himself to the Tourney. If you allow me to handle this-"

"Boy." Aerys spoke up, looking at Ellion ,"Why did you crown Lady Joanna as Queen of Love and Beauty? You could have easily crowned any of the young Ladies and Maidens, an attempt to swoon them, seeing that they are without suitors."

He gestured at the Young Hightower Ladies who sat next to Lord Hightower, sitting in the stands behind him. Two certain young women who seemed to be around Ellion's age shifted at the mention, knowing that the King was referring to him.

"Or you could have crowned Lady Genna, who is the Lady you are sworn to." Aerys said, "Seeing that you are hired by her."

Ellion glanced at Genna, who didn't seem to react to this, and then he looked back at Aerys.

"Well, Your Grace. Why would I, a bastard, try to swoon a daughter of a Lord?" He said, "And Lady Genna is married, and she is my benefactor, that is all. And the reason I chose Lady Joanna is that she is Lady Lannister. I had to ensure that no matter who the victor is, whether Lannister Knight or not, she is crowned. For she is the Lady of the Westerlands, is she not? I would have done the same with Her Grace, Queen Rhaella, Your Grace, if this took place in King's Landing. I mean nothing by it."

"Bold words." Aerys said, "I could have your tongue removed by simply saying that."

Ellion nodded, "I am aware."

"Yet, you still say those words." Aerys continued, a slight smile on his face, "I like you, bastard boy. No, Ellion. I like you, Ellion. You won this Tourney, fair and square. You dismounted my son, who was just recently knighted. I suppose something must be done."

"Your Grace, the rewards of a Tourney can only go to a Knight." Tywin spoke up, "He is not a Knight."

"We can change that." Aerys said as he made his way down towards the arena, walking down the steps, "Rhaegar! Come."

Prince Rhaegar and Ser Barristan Selmy made their way towards the King, looking over at Ellion who was still on his horse.

"What is it, Father?" Rhaegar asked

"Get off the horse, boy." Aerys said

Ellion quickly dismounted the horse as a squire grabbed the reins and pulled it away, "My apologies." He said, "What is it you require of me, Your Grace."

"Get on your knee." Aerys said seriously

Ellion did as he was told, getting on one knee as Aerys extended his arm.

"Your sword, Rhaegar." Aerys said, "Give it to me."

Rhaegar drew his blade and handed it to Aerys, who took it and walked over to Ellion.

He then tapped the blade on one of Ellion's shoulders, touching against the armor plate, "In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave." Aerys began to say as he tapped the other shoulder, "In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the young and innocent. In the name of the Maid, I charge you to protect all women...."

Tywin clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, clearly agitated by this, "N-No...." He muttered to himself, "This cannot be....."

Aerys looked at Ellion as everyone watched in suspense, "I, King Aerys II Targaryen, hereby dub you as Ser Ellion Red-Hair." Aerys said, "Knight of The Seven Kingdoms."

Ellion had his head bowed slightly in a humble manner, "You honor me greatly, Your Grace." He said seriously, not looking up, "I will carry this name with gratitude and honor."

Aerys pulled the sword back, "I would hope so." He said, "For someone who defeated many outlaws and dismounted many knights in this tourney, I expect for you to be formidable. You will receive the reward of the Tourney, yes. But to make up for whatever offense Tywin felt, you will pay him a portion of it."

"I have no complaints about that." Ellion said, "May I lift my head up, Your Grace?"

"Yes." Aerys said as he handed the sword back to Rhaegar, "You are now a Knight sworn to House Lannister."

"Well, if Tywin wants you."
