The sound reached me before anything else.
A low, unmistakable crunch of tires against gravel, steady and deliberate, carrying through the quiet of the evening. It slipped through the open window and wrapped around my senses, pulling my attention outward before I consciously meant to give it.
I was already standing by the window when the familiar black car rolled into the driveway, its polished surface catching the last traces of soft evening light. Sleek. Imposing. Exactly the way I remembered it. My body reacted before my mind could catch up, heart lifting sharply, shoulders tightening, breath stalling halfway in my chest as if my lungs had forgotten what to do next.
Robert was back.
