Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: First Day Drama

Autumn Reynolds had barely eaten lunch. Her appetite had disappeared the moment she realized Blackwood Academy wasn't just a school—it was a battlefield.

First, there was Zayden Calloway, the arrogant, untouchable rich boy who had already made it clear he enjoyed watching her struggle. Then there was Vanessa Sinclair, the queen bee, who had made it equally clear that Autumn's presence in this school was unacceptable.

And she still had to survive all the eyes of the other students, most of whom were already judging her for the way she stood up to them.

Autumn sighed as she navigated the hallways, clutching her books tighter. Every whisper she passed made her stomach twist. "Scholarship girl…" "Can she really survive here?"

She knew it wasn't just jealousy. She could feel the tension building like a storm, waiting to strike.

The Queen Bee Strikes

By mid-afternoon, Autumn found herself in the courtyard, hoping to find a quiet spot to catch her breath. She had just settled on a bench under a large oak tree when a familiar voice cut through the air.

"Well, well, look who's trying to act important."

Autumn looked up to see Vanessa Sinclair approaching, flanked by her two friends, both smirking like this was the funniest thing in the world.

Autumn didn't get up. "I'm not doing anything. Just sitting," she said calmly.

Vanessa leaned against the edge of the bench, her green eyes glinting. "Sitting? Oh, I see. You're trying to make yourself look like you belong."

Autumn frowned. "I already told you, I do belong here. Scholarship or not, I earned my place."

Vanessa laughed, a sound sharp enough to make Autumn flinch. "Earned your place? Darling, your place is at the bottom. Everyone knows that."

Autumn straightened, meeting her gaze. "You can think whatever you want, but I'm not afraid of you. Or Zayden."

Vanessa's eyes widened slightly. That boldness startled her, but she quickly masked it with a sneer.

"Bold, aren't you?" Vanessa said. "I'll admit it… you're different from the usual charity cases. But don't forget your place."

Autumn smirked. "I never forget who I am."

Vanessa's two friends snickered behind her, and Autumn knew this wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

Theo to the Rescue

Just as Vanessa opened her mouth to continue, a voice called out.

"Autumn! Wait up!"

Autumn turned to see Theo Hartley jogging toward her, his warm brown eyes filled with concern.

"Hey," he said, coming to a stop beside her. "You okay?"

Autumn nodded. "I'm fine. Just… dealing with some old money problems."

Theo glanced at Vanessa and her friends. "They giving you trouble already?"

Autumn let out a small laugh. "You could say that. The queen bee doesn't like new faces, especially scholarship students."

Theo's expression softened. "Don't worry. You'll be fine. You're stronger than you think."

Autumn smiled faintly. There was something about Theo that made her feel safe, even in a place that was so clearly designed to intimidate her.

Vanessa's glare lingered as she turned and walked away, dragging her friends with her. Autumn watched them go, then looked at Theo.

"Thanks," she said.

Theo grinned. "Anytime. And just so you know, I think it's pretty impressive that you stood up to her. Not many people would."

Autumn shrugged. "I guess I just don't like being told I don't belong somewhere."

Theo nodded, his smile encouraging. "Exactly. And you don't."

An Unexpected Encounter

Just as Autumn and Theo were about to leave the courtyard, a familiar voice rang out.

"Well, well… look at you two, getting along so nicely."

Autumn's stomach dropped. Zayden Calloway was leaning against the railing of the school building, his blue eyes fixed on them, his expression calm but unreadable.

Autumn felt a strange mix of annoyance and curiosity. She didn't understand why he seemed interested in her at all.

"What do you want, Zayden?" she asked, her tone even.

He pushed off the railing and walked toward them, stopping just a few feet away. "I just wanted to see how my favorite scholarship student is doing."

Autumn frowned. "Your… favorite?"

Zayden smirked, tilting his head. "You're entertaining. That's all. And different. I like different."

Theo looked at him, frowning slightly. "You're just going to stand there and say that? Do you always enjoy making people uncomfortable?"

Zayden's eyes flicked to Theo, then back to Autumn. "Maybe. Or maybe I just enjoy watching you handle things your way."

Autumn felt her cheeks flush, but she refused to look away. "Well, I'm handling it just fine."

Zayden smiled faintly. "I'll be watching," he said, then turned and walked away, leaving a strange tension in the air.

New Challenges Ahead

Autumn and Theo walked in silence for a moment, both aware that the school was already starting to shape itself against her.

"Zayden… he's unpredictable," Theo said finally. "Be careful. He doesn't really play by the rules."

Autumn nodded. "I know. But I'm not going to let him—or anyone—intimidate me. I didn't survive this long to start now."

Theo smiled. "Good. Because I think you'll need every bit of that strength. Vanessa isn't going to stop just because you said a few words back to her. She's going to make your life… interesting."

Autumn sighed. "Great. Just what I needed—more drama."

Theo laughed. "Welcome to Blackwood Academy. Trust me, this is nothing compared to what's coming."

Autumn knew he was right. Between Zayden's unpredictable nature and Vanessa's jealousy, her first week was going to be just the beginning of a long, difficult journey.

And somehow, she had a feeling it was going to be far more dangerous and exciting than she had ever imagined.
