Chapter 51: You're Exactly Who I'm Guarding Against!
Laboratory, First Floor.
The light bulbs on the ceiling shone with white light.
Bob packed a large pair of pliers into his backpack and trotted a few steps to catch up with the team.
"Both locks on the main gate are broken."
Hopper nodded upon hearing this.
They had been inside for a while, but were still not far from the entrance.
According to William's instructions, they destroyed the door locks along the way and cleared some accumulated obstacles.
At this moment, the way back was clear.
Fourth Floor, Laboratory.
Dr. Brenner was thinking.
Now the number of guards was small, and these police officers had weapons.
Attacking directly would likely result in losses on his side.
If another accident happened in the laboratory later, Brenner's personal safety could not be guaranteed.
Thinking of this, he decided to divide and conquer these officers.
Brenner went to the other side and operated the computer on the desk.
First Floor.
An officer named Kap carefully pushed open a door.
He first took out the pliers to destroy the door lock, and then began to inspect the environment inside.
And just a second after the destruction, the electronic lock signal light above suddenly lit up.
But because the circuit board had been destroyed, the door lock couldn't be closed.
Inside the laboratory, Dr. Brenner frowned.
What happened?
His computer was connected to all the electronic locks in the building; it was impossible for them not to close.
Brenner didn't believe it and tried several other locations.
But he found that the electronic locks worked normally, only the one at the entrance failed.
A moment later, he discovered the problem.
"Damn it, are these guys really police?"
...
After spending some effort, the group arrived at the corner of the stairs.
Hopper suddenly signaled everyone to stop, a serious look in his eyes.
Bob and the others looked in that direction and saw a black cat at the corner.
Its fur was standing on end, growling at a door at the top of the stairs, seemingly demonstrating.
"Respect the opinions of cats and dogs."
Seeing this scene, Hopper recited this sentence silently.
In the past, he would definitely have gone up to check out of curiosity.
But the priest had repeatedly warned him earlier, so he decided to play it safe.
Fourth Floor, Laboratory.
"Why is there a cat running around again? Didn't we eliminate them all?!"
Brenner punched the table.
After the previous plan was thwarted, he decided to take a risk and use the underground monsters against these officers.
The latter were humans contaminated by those fluid black shadows, possessing inhuman strength.
They had been isolated by the door, and at this moment, Brenner unlocked the electronic lock.
According to the plan, these officers would be attacked when passing the stairway.
But because of this damn black cat, it aroused their vigilance.
"Looks like I can only change my approach."
Brenner decided not to wait any longer and opened that door immediately.
First Floor.
A figure appeared behind the door, wearing work clothes, standing with his back to the officers.
"Hey, are you okay?" Bob shouted.
Seeing no reaction, he planned to get closer to take a look.
But Hopper reached out to stop him.
"If someone behaves strangely, stay away immediately!"
Bob also remembered the priest's words at this time.
But the other party looked like a living person no matter how you looked at it, so he said:
"Should be fine, he has no weapon, we can interrogate him."
But Hopper pulled him back a few steps.
At the same time, the person behind the door turned around.
The blood vessels on his face appeared black, and his eyes had no spirit.
Bang.
The person just pushed casually, and a palm print was left on the iron door.
A drop of cold sweat flowed down Bob's forehead; he was glad the chief stopped him.
Seeing the humanoid monster rushing over, the officers took out their pistols one after another.
But at this time Hopper suddenly shouted: "Alternate firing, save bullets!"
This was also one of the safety guidelines!
Hopper acted as the first shooter.
He used only one magazine to find the characteristics of this monster—bullets could penetrate the skin, but it feared no damage to vital parts.
So when the second magazine was fired, Hopper aimed specifically at the joints.
A moment later, the monster lost its mobility.
Hopper didn't hesitate and immediately finished it off according to the safety guidelines.
Fourth Floor, Laboratory.
"How is this possible!"
Brenner looked shocked.
If he hadn't confirmed that these officers belonged to the Hawkins Police Department, he would have thought a Secret Service team had arrived.
High vigilance, tight cooperation, possessing a full set of on-scene handling procedures.
Too professional!
Were these still those lazy Hawkins rookies?
When the laboratory was first established, Brenner also considered communicating with the local police.
But because the latter's combat effectiveness was too unbearable, and Brenner himself preferred secrecy.
So he didn't do it in the end.
And the result was just as he expected; for so many years, the other party never discovered a secret laboratory in the town.
First Floor.
Hopper poured a bottle of holy water on the humanoid monster, purifying it quickly.
Then, they took out an amulet and placed it at the door leading underground.
Seeing a monster that could withstand bullets being eliminated by a bottle of salt water like this.
The officers present were shocked again by that priest's methods.
What was his background, and what happened to this world?
Just like this, the officers made their way to the fourth floor.
They encountered many accidents during the period.
But following the safety guidelines, they resolved the danger every time without a single injury.
At this point, the officers truly felt the importance of the guidelines.
And admired the priest's caution even more.
Before long, the group arrived at the fourth floor.
Facing the fully armed guards, Hopper didn't hesitate and pushed Eleven out immediately.
With just a few tilts of her head, those guards all fell to the ground.
"Eat quickly!"
Hopper handed over the lunch box in time.
With these experiences just now, he already believed William's words without a doubt.
So, when the officers arrived at the laboratory where Brenner was, the latter was slumped in a chair.
Brenner's hair was a bit messy, and he looked up resentfully.
Hopper raised an eyebrow upon seeing this; the other party seemed... very resentful?
"Don't think you can take my laboratory like this."
Brenner's voice was a bit hoarse; while speaking, his left hand reached under the table.
But immediately after, he felt a pain in his stomach and fell backward.
Hopper retracted his foot, then looked under the table.
There was a hidden button there.
Although it was unclear what would happen if pressed, Hopper was sure it couldn't be good.
Fortunately, he remembered William's instruction—strike first when encountering the person in charge!
Hopper grabbed Brenner and tied him to the chair.
And the latter was also a bit emotional.
"Why!"
"Why do you know my methods so well!"
"You should be rookie detectives with poor discipline!"
Facing Brenner's questioning, Hopper was also a bit unhappy.
The Hawkins Police Department was indeed lax in training usually, but he didn't want to admit it in front of outsiders.
Therefore, Hopper stared at Brenner and said in an extremely arrogant tone:
"You're exactly who I'm guarding against!"
Brenner gritted his teeth upon hearing this.
But unable to escape, he could only twist his body forcefully.
"Alright, enough chitchat. Someone wants to talk to you."
Hopper took out a cloth bag, opened it to reveal a radio walkie-talkie inside, with a crucifix tied to it.
He placed the walkie-talkie in front of Brenner and turned on the switch.
After a while, a voice came from the walkie-talkie.
"Dr. Martin Brenner?"
Brenner frowned; this voice sounded young, but he was sure he didn't know it.
Before he could speak, the other end continued:
"I want to discuss a cooperation with you."
