Relief washed over my father's voice through the phone. "Then I'll be waiting for you."
I couldn't stomach another second of his pathetic gratitude, so I ended the call abruptly.
My back pressed against the cold door as I slumped to the floor, my mind spinning in endless circles.
The wall clock's relentless ticking echoed through the silent house, each second dragging me deeper into this nightmare.
Just thinking about actually going through with this plan made my stomach turn. I wrapped my arms around my knees, imagining the collectors' cruel hands severing my father's limbs, and a violent shiver ran down my spine.
Maybe Augusto would listen this time. Begging had to be better than watching my father get mutilated.
I grabbed my phone with shaking fingers and scrolled to Augusto's contact.
The message took me several attempts to type correctly: [Please come home tonight. I'll do whatever you want.]
