Chapter 103 - Half-baked

Kathleen's voice boomed through the small bedroom, sharp enough to cut through the heavy silence that usually filled the house these days.

"And what do you think you're whispering over there, Kelvin?" she demanded, her eyes narrowing as she caught sight of her son's head tucked away inside the dark depths of the wardrobe.

Kelvin's heart hammered against his ribs, but his reflexes were faster. He immediately ended the call, the screen of his phone going dark just as he shoved it deep into the pocket of a hanging jacket.

He took a slow breath, pulling himself out of the wardrobe before turning to face his mother. He tried to look bored rather than guilty. "How long have you been standing there?" he asked, throwing the question back at her to buy himself some time.

"Long enough to know you called me and your father scary, Kelvin," she hissed, her face contorting with a mix of anger and hurt.
