Chapter 11 - CHAPTER ELEVEN — UNEXPECTED ALLIANCE

Daniel's eyes narrowed at the stranger. The dim beam of the flashlight revealed a lean figure, face half-hidden under a hood. But there was something in the way he moved—calm, deliberate—that immediately told Daniel he wasn't here to harm them.

"Who are you?" Daniel asked, voice low but tense.

"Name's Kieran," the stranger replied. "And you're running out of time."

Aisha stepped closer to Daniel, her hand brushing against his arm. "Can we trust him?"

Daniel's jaw tightened. "I don't know. But right now, we don't have a choice."

Kieran gestured toward a smaller tunnel branching off to the left. "This way. It's safer. For now."

"Why are you helping us?" Daniel demanded.

Kieran hesitated, then said quietly, "Let's just say… we have a common enemy."

The three of them moved quickly, the echo of their footsteps swallowed by the vastness of the tunnel system. Pipes overhead rattled with distant vibrations. Somewhere far away, water dripped into puddles that reflected the flashlight beams like tiny shards of glass.

Aisha whispered, "Do you know who those people were?"

Daniel shook his head. "Not exactly. But they don't miss. If they were close enough to track us down here, they're serious."

Kieran glanced back at them. "You're lucky the alarm went off. That distracted them. But it won't last. We need to move faster."

The tunnel forked again. Kieran paused, pointing to a narrow vent running along the wall. "Through here. It's tight, but it's the only way out without being seen."

Daniel gave Aisha a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. "Hold on."

The three of them crawled through the vent, metal edges scraping against their clothes. Aisha's breath came in shallow bursts, panic gnawing at her chest. Every shadow seemed alive, every sound amplified.

Finally, they emerged into a small maintenance room. Kieran shut the vent behind them and locked it with a small device that hummed softly.

"We have a few minutes," Kieran said. "Talk fast—why are they after you?"

Daniel's voice was low, clipped. "They know what we found. Information we weren't supposed to have. And now… they want it back. By any means."

Aisha swallowed hard. "And if we can't give it to them?"

Kieran's expression hardened. "Then they'll make sure neither of you walks out of this alive."

Silence fell. The weight of the words pressed down on them.

Aisha's hand tightened around Daniel's. "Then we fight. We have to."

Kieran's eyes flicked toward her. "Courage is good. But smart moves are better."

Daniel exhaled slowly. "Then tell us what we do next."

Kieran pulled out a small map, illuminated under the weak fluorescent light. "We go through here," he said, tracing a route through the tunnels. "It's risky, but it's our only chance. You follow me… and no sudden moves."

Aisha felt a mix of fear and strange hope. For the first time in hours, she felt like they might actually survive this.

But deep down, she knew the tunnels held more than just escape. Secrets. Lies. And the truth that had been waiting for them—hidden in the shadows, just ahead.
