Chapter 8 - The Trial By Fire

The day of the so called hero society trials had finally arrived. The hero society trial grounds were made to facilitate dozens of people and withstand the high demand of different ability users. Multiple platforms were suspended above a bottomless pit and was designed that proctors could observe from the sides. It was early morning the air was heavy and filled with the presence of multiple candidates, Blessing stood in the middle of the crowd. "This place is filled with at least a hundred people. I knew they were more ability users but this is, this is just insane." He thought. He looked around the ground and he noticed the way people presented themselves it was different from people who had just awakened it seemed as if most of them were born with their abilities or had them for a long time. Blessing nervously, lifted his left hand on his chin "I'm I going to be able to compete with these people."Suddenly the announcer appeared on a platform above the trial grounds "Welcome everyone to phase 2 of hero society trials. In this round we are going to test your instincts under pressure. The rules are simple survive."Whispers erupted in the grounds as candidates muttered to each other "survive? What do you mean by survive?" The announcer grinned as he looked down upon the candidates "Exactly what it sounds like. Good luck."With a final eerie grin, he dissolved into the air itself, no flash no sound, just gone. Then, as if the world had exhaled something dark, a black smoke slithered from the cracks of the ground, curling and creeping like it had a mind of its own. Panic flickered in everyone's eyes. The air grew heavier. Something wasn't over, something had just begun. "Smoke? Is this part of the test, are they trying to choke us to death. Well in that case." Blessing wondered.Blessing tried to blow away the smoke with his airflow but the smoke just got worse and covered every candidate in the grounds within an instant. And as every candidates got completely covered a few final word flew across the grounds carried by the breeze. "Let the game begin." When the smoke finally cleared, Blessing found himself in an isolated field. The wind was still, the sky an unnatural shade of gray. No form of life, just an endless stretch of grass and a few trees swaying gently. "Where am I," he muttered as he looked around. "Did I die? Is this heaven? But I don't see anyone so it's the road to heaven, I guess." Then out of the blue tiny shuffling sounds broke the silence.Blessing turned his head slowly, eyes narrowing. Across the field, the grass rippled not from wind, but from movement.Out from the earth, crawling over the hills like insects, came tiny creatures of sand, their bodies shifting and crumbling with every step. No larger than a housecat, they had glowing red eyes and jagged, childlike shapes, as if drawn by a child who had never seen a real animal. "What are those things? If this is the road to heaven then there probably escorts, yeah escorts."Blessing waved his hand with a nervous smile. "Over here little guys." The sand creatures paused, then one lunged."Ow!" he yelped as sharp grains bit his leg. He stumbled back, realization hitting fast. "Okay… not friendly. Not friendly at all." As he then started to run away from the sand creatures. Meanwhile Kaito stood atop the shattered remains of a massive stone creature, dust swirling around him.He brushed a bit of rubble off his shoulder and muttered, "Tch… was that it? Survive huh, he made it sound like it was dangerous."In a blink, he was transported back to the trial grounds. The proctors turned, jaws slacked. "He's done already?" one whispered. "His time… it's second only to Kanji's!"From the observation deck, Elan crossed her arms and smirked. "Hmph… this kid might just be another prodigy." On the other hand Esther tapped her pen on the desk, staring blankly at the test paper. "Brother missed school today for this trail thing…" She thought, glancing out the window. "Whatever his doing I bet it's more exciting than this boring test." But Blessing was crouched behind a crooked tree in the middle of a desolate field hands clutched tightly around legs, eyes wide. "Crap they're not friendly at all and they just keep on coming at me its torture. Wait torture, does that mean I'm in hell!?"Blessing began fidgeting, panic rising in his chest as he sobbed. "But how can I be in hell I mean back when I was alive I was kind wasn't I. I helped the elderly I never stole anything from anyone… well except for sugar back when I was kid." He paused for moment. "Wait could that be the case sugar. I don't believe it I'm gonna suffer for the rest of eternity because I stole sugar."A sand creature appeared in front of him and stared at him.But instead of panicking Blessing grinned with a twisted look in his eyes "But If I'm dead that means there's nothing to be afraid of after all I can't die twice can I." He then started running toward it and kicked it like a ball. The creature quickly turned to dust.Blessing grinned even wider "Well, well I defeated it now I'm going to kill the rest of them and rule over hell itself. Come at me you little demons."A huge turn of events as Blessing started running towards the sand creatures, as the first one jumps up at him he spun and gave it a round house kick while it was still air born. The second came from the ground but he gave it a lower kick and then a straight punch for the one that was straight ahead. The creatures then came at him all at once trying to overwhelm him but when they got close to him he pushed them away with a burst of air which emanated from his body. All the creatures immediately turned to dust."I'm dead but I can still use my powers and it seems I killed all those little demons so does that mean I conquered hell." He said with excitement. But just like that the dust particles started gathering up at single point creating a humanoid structure."Seriously." Blessing thought as he watched it gather. As soon as it formed it punched straight at Blessing who barely managed to side step its attack. At that same moment Blessing created a gust of wind to send the humanoid flying in the air but his effort where in vein as the humanoid barely even moved. It then went for a series of attacks a straight punch followed by an uppercut Blessing blocked the straight punch by using his palm to push it away and then quickly dodged the uppercut, the humanoid was fast too fast for Blessing to keep up. Blessing tried to get close to it by redirecting airflow to propel himself but the moment he got close enough he was sent flying by a round kick right in the face. "Aww that really hurt." Blessing said his face covered in sand. The humanoid then appeared in front of him within an instant and tried to stomp him while he was still on the ground he rolled himself away from it and glanced at the humanoid with narrow eyes"This thing is fast and durable normal attacks won't work on it but if I pressurize my airflow attacks and keep on boosting my speed with airflow." He thought as he looked at the humanoid. The humanoid slammed its fist into the ground beneath them sending a ripple of hardened sand which went towards Blessing like a tidal wave Blessing pivoted getting himself into a low stance. With a sharp exhale he flicked his palms forward and sent out a blast of pressurized air which carved through the sand wave, splitting it before it could crush him. The humanoid surged forward, his heavy limbs moving faster than expected. Blessing ducked its hook punch and countered with a spinning kick using a burst of wind to increase speed. His heel cracked into the humanoids torso but the sand only scattered and reformed."You can't beat what you can't hit." the humanoid growled. Blessing narrowed his eyes. "You can talk, guess that makes you the ruler of this place." Blessing then launched into a flurry of air assisted strikes, punches that were like piston bursts, each propelled by compressed wind. The humanoid was pushed back stumbling as chunks of sand blew off with each blow. The humanoid retaliated by raising a hand. Sand surged upward like tendrils and formed razor sharp whips, slashing through the air. Blessing ducked, back flipped then jumped using air to lift him upwards and twisted in midair to dodge a whip that aimed at his chest. Midair he started rotating his hands over in a circular motion. A vortex exploded beneath him launching him downward like a bullet. His knee collided with the humanoid's chest creating a burst of wind that sent the sand scattering across the terrain."Let's see how tightly you hold together without air". He drew the wind inward, vacuuming the air around the humanoid. The sand began to collapse, suffocating its own cohesion without moisture or pressure the humanoid staggered as its form turned to dust."Even sand can't stand without air. I win demon." Blessing smirked as he watched it fall apart.Blessing was then sent back to the grounds were he found others there. "Welcome back from hell Blessing." The announcer said with a smile on his face."So I wasn't dead after all, well this is embarrassing I wonder if anyone heard what I was saying." He thought. "Now then the names of the individuals who passed this round. Kaito Kurozawa, Rei Kazehaya, Juno Aragami, Mira Fushigiri, Blessing Chiaki, Yuki Asagiri, Naoki Kobayashi." the announcer said.Blessing attention quickly shifted in hearing Naoki's name "Kobayashi? Naoki Kobayashi. Could it actually be that Naoki?" He wondered.Naoki's eyes also narrowed "Dang, so Blessing has powers too doesn't matter though I'm still going to crash him.The announcer finished the names of the candidates who passed and they start leaving the grounds one by one.Elan sat comfortably in the stands her eyes covered by sun glasses on her face "Sixteen candidates passed huh. I got say I'm impressed a lot of them show potential but none of them are close to my level though." She goes silent for a while then smirked "Well maybe with the exception of the prodigy Kaito."The trials were underway and Blessing's true journey with others like himself or maybe even more dangerous allies or enemies had finally arrived. Would he pass the trials or perish with the others, this was all up to fate.
