Chapter 2 - Prologue

"T-Minus five minutes till drop", yelled a guy from the slim carrier cockpit about ten feet to my left. I was sitting in my poorly padded dark seat preparing for deployment into the city. Our mission was to secure the city and establish a base. I had not yet been informed of my specific duties pertaining to the operation, but I'm sure I'll be issued my orders either as we're landing or in formation once we land. Suddenly the carrier shook. Our seat belts rattled with the sudden movement. It must be really windy out.

"Sir! We just received news from Delta squad, the LZ is getting pretty hot"

I saw the commander's face turn hot with anger. His name was Fiord, this is my first mission with him.

"Patch me through to them, now!", yelled Fiord

"Yes, sir!"

I looked through the small doorway to the cockpit and watched the pilot push a few buttons.

Fiord pressed a button on his headset. "Give me a sit rep!", he yelled in a low and loud tone, "What the hell is happening!?", Fiord then screamed.

Right as he yelled that the carrier shook violently.

"Sir we're taking hits, they're aiming their attacks at us! We can't take much more of this"

"Get us down now"

Attacking us? But this was supposed to be a non-hostile mission. We were to simply set up in the city, for a nearby operation. What the hell would make the encounter hostile?

"Sir we're not at the LZ yet"

"I said, get us down, the longer we stay up here the easier of a target we become! Now land it, that's an order!"

"Yes sir!", yelled the soldier. He turned back towards the front windshield when a large cracking noise rang through the front of the carrier. I looked over as a solid metal spear suddenly shot up through the deck of the cockpit, ripping through his chair and skewering him under the chin into his head. His body went limp and blood slowly streaked down the spear like a dripping faucet. Suddenly several more crackling noises echoed through the carrier as several more spears punctured the deck. Soldiers started screaming and the smell of blood grew thick in the cramped troop bay. Flashing alarm lights flew over the scene in front of me and I could see the flashes of the damage. Spears sticking through their legs and a few had some in their chest sticking them to the wall like a rat on a dartboard. Whatever spears didn't hit soldiers, stuck up through the deck like spikes. I took in the scene before me and suddenly started to taste blood. I then realized I had been biting my lip, as to prevent me from throwing up at all the blood and gore. I looked around, and suddenly began to hear the carrier alarm going off and I began to float in my seat. The soldier next to me grabbed my shirt.

"Hold on tight soldier! We're gonna hit the ground harder than a drunk grandma on new years! Whooo hooooo!"

I'm not sure what platoon this guy was from, but whichever one it is, I hope I'm never a part of it. I slammed into my seat so hard it felt like my spine just jumped out of my body, I then flew back and slammed my head on the bulkhead. The world around me swam and then slowly faded to black. I woke up to red lights flashing rapidly, and the faint glow of sunlight through the cockpit windshield. I lifted my head and looked around at the seats around me. Several soldiers were missing including Fiord, and the one next to me. Whatever seats weren't empty had soldiers skewered to the hull or their seat. The smell was repulsive, but I couldn't have been out for very long, judging by the sunlight. I slowly reached for the buckle of my chair and winced as pains shot up and through my body. I slammed on the release valve above my seat shoulder harness. It unlocked with a loud pop and I slowly began to stand up. My body ached as I stood. I then carefully turned back towards my seat and reached up to disconnect my pack and weapon from the ceiling mount. It fell into me and nearly knocked me over. I quickly steadied myself. I tiptoed my way through puddles of blood and spears to the carrier's rear door controls. I tapped the touch screen panel, and it lit up. A large green button popped up and I pushed it. The doors began to slowly creak and shutter open. The top part slowly raised as the bottom door suddenly gave way and fell hard on the ground making a loud thump. Sunlight, the smell of dirt and exhaust along with the sound of zipping and cracking from guns around me and yelling filled the air.

"Go, go, go!", yelled a soldier in a street to the left of the carrier as their group pushed up. I slowly put on my pack, and checked my weapon. It was a standard issued FA37 assault rifle. Had quite a kick to it, but was more than capable of getting the job done.

I flipped the accelerator circuit on the side of the rifle and it began making a harsh whirring sound as it began charging the round inside of it. I then slowly walked out of the back of the carrier and scanned the surroundings. We had crashed just on the outskirts of the city.

There was a large jungle behind me. Directly in front of me was a street running to the left and right of me, along with another one on the other side running directly into the city. The city was much smaller than any of the major cities, with the tallest building being three stories tall. The buildings mostly had dirty metallic white walls with dark teal metal slanted roofs and lighter teal highlights. The style of the city was not much better looking than anything from before the dark wars period. The only thing that looked relatively modern was the streets' eloq power lines and the parked cars.

I looked back down towards the events unfolding. To my left several soldiers were firing on the small group of attackers. The group had two people in front who had created large transparent blue barriers protecting the people behind them. They were equipped with what looked like lanterns, and were throwing balls of fire from it with their hands. While others were throwing earth from the ground around them at the soldiers.

An explosion rang to my right and I snapped my head just to see several attackers get thrown into the air, missing several parts of their body and spraying blood like rain across the street. I focused in on the streets and city behind them, it was scattered with more attackers throwing more types of magic attacks at soldiers and the soldiers returning fire, dropping any of them without any form of shield or protection pretty quickly.

I looked back directly down at the street in front of me. There was a large tan man, easily seven feet tall, and beyond muscular. He was towering over the soldiers with nothing more than a pair of black shorts and two metal spears. He then turned and I noticed he had a large metal piece over his back. He continued flicking the metal spears around in his hands deflecting the soldiers bullets as a group of about seven slowly tried to converge around him. Since our weapons took some time to charge the next round, fending off against that many soldiers with his level of skill seemed trivial.

One of the soldiers started to come to a stop as he needed to reload, and he threw a spear directly through his chest, while still deflecting all the other bullets. He turned back towards the city, and I saw several what looked like spikes sticking out of the plate in his back. Suddenly he dropped to almost a crouch and spun. The spikes shot out like bullets and flew at the soldiers. Except they weren't spikes, they were full length spears. They skewered the soldiers to the surrounding buildings and street. Spraying a trail of blood behind them as they flew back.

It was him! This was the guy that crashed our carrier! After seeing him take out seven soldiers with no problem and a carrier, I didn't exactly have the motivation to fight him. He turned around and looked straight at me. I felt all the blood in my body fall to my feet. He started walking towards me and slowly began to pick up speed until he was sprinting. He the reached back and pulled a spear out of his back as he was sprinting. I froze with fear and had no idea what to do, I knew I had to run.

Fighting wasn't an option, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't move my feet. I tried so hard to snap myself out of it, but it was no use. Fear had completely overtaken me. He was now only fifteen feet away and he began to raise his arm in a throwing position. I felt my body suddenly become heavy, as I accepted my fate. When the ground around him lit up with gunfire. A jet darted past overhead. I watched as it soared through the sky in a circular motion, making its way around for another run. The jet was flying up behind him, but he was so focused on me he didn't even turn to acknowledge it. Gunfire rained down again, and suddenly it was struck with several spears straight through its underbelly. The jet streamed over my head and crashed somewhere over the treeline. The guy continued to walk towards me and as soon as I was within his reach he leaned back, ready to swing the spear at me. I closed my eyes, waiting for the strike.

My face was hit was a splatter of something hot and a strong smell of iron. I desperately wiped my eyes to see what had happened. The man in front of me was laying on the floor. His head had exploded and blood was pouring all over the ground beneath me around my boots. My uniform, boots, and gun were covered in blood and brain matter. I looked up to see a faint glint from a far away window, and then it disappeared. I don't know who that was but whoever it was, I owe them my life.

I walked into the city cautiously. I needed to regroup with whoever was left of my platoon, and fast. So I can figure out what the plan is. I took about five steps, and then the entire sky in front of me lit up, the ground shook and all sound around me faded.
