A month later, a Great Master from Astapor arrived in Meereen. Mufasa naturally hadn't gone to Astapor himself, as the Wise Master of Meereen mentioned that his friend, the Great Master, was already coming to Meereen for a business transaction, and would therefore complete the deal with Mufasa simultaneously.
At the Wise Master's residence, Mufasa met with the Great Master from Astapor.
"Warrior from the continent of Westeros, I heard from my friend that you made a trip to the Valyrian Ruins, returned alive, and acquired unimaginable treasures."
Through the interpreter's translation, Mufasa understood what he meant and reiterated the terms of the transaction he desired.
"This transaction can proceed, payment upon delivery." The Great Master held an eagle-headed scepter, which served as a token of ownership; whoever possessed it was the master of those Unsullied.
Mufasa instructed the Lannister soldiers behind him to bring up ten large chests, which were filled with Ancient Valyrian copper coins, along with rubies, sapphires, and various diamonds.
"It is indeed ancient currency!" The Great Master from Astapor was highly satisfied. He happily proceeded with the transaction with Mufasa.
After both parties counted the number of Unsullied and assessed the value of Mufasa's assets, the exchange was made.
Mufasa now held the eagle-headed scepter, and one thousand Unsullied stood before him.
They were all slaves, as slaves were the least valuable and the easiest to train.
The Unsullied were tireless in training, knew no pain, and only knew how to obey orders, making them perfect slaves, akin to automatons.
From childhood, the Unsullied learned to use spears, shields, and daggers. Although they were not skilled with bows and arrows, they could nonetheless shield their master from incoming shafts.
"Now you are my soldiers, one thousand strong. You should have your own commanders. Every hundred men must have a centurion. Ten centurions, step forward," Mufasa commanded.
Ten Unsullied quickly stepped forward and stood in a line before Mufasa, from left to right.
They were neither the tallest nor the heaviest, yet they were qualified to be centurions.
"Do you have names?" Mufasa asked.
"Master, we named ourselves after animals," said the first Unsullied on the left.
"Tell me, what are your names? Starting from the left, state your names one by one."
"Master, this humble servant is called Fly!"
"Master, this humble servant is called Mosquito."
"Master, this humble servant is called Vole."
"...Master, this humble servant is called Pheasant," the last Unsullied stated.
"Good, I have memorized all ten of your names. You will continue to serve as centurions, managing the hundred men under your command and serving me! Soon I will be crossing the Dothraki Grass Sea. We may encounter Dothraki, so prepare yourselves."
"Podrick, ensure they receive three full meals a day. They must not train or fight on an empty stomach."
"Yes, Ser!"
Podrick had become notorious in the brothels of Meereen during this period; many brothel owners had forbidden him from visiting their establishments because he was simply too unprofitable.
Mufasa decided to depart in three days. He still needed to purchase horses and carriages, but these were minor matters that could be left for Podrick to handle.
Mufasa, meanwhile, accepted an invitation from the Wise Masters to visit their fighting pits.
The fighting pits in Meereen were structured like an ancient Roman amphitheater.
In his previous life, Mufasa had watched television series like *Spartacus*, so he had seen gladiators fighting each other, though only through a screen.
However, seeing it firsthand, he realized that television certainly cut out too many bloody scenes! Otherwise, they would never have passed censorship.
Mufasa arrived at the perfect time. Today, he was scheduled to witness a beast fight: ten gladiators battling an exotic beast from Sothoryos.
The exotic beast was massive, measuring over thirty feet in length. It was a Pterodactyl, though its wings had been severed.
"Ser Mufasa, do you know how the Valyrian Dragonlords managed to breed dragons?" the Wise Master asked from beside him.
Mufasa shook his head.
"They were originally nomadic people who later discovered fire worms at the foot of the volcano—reptiles similar to giant snakes. Because they lived near the volcano year-round, they learned to breathe fire."
"Later, by capturing the winged lizards of Sothoryos Island, they used magic to crossbreed the two creatures, resulting in the dragons that followed."
What he said seemed quite similar to the account Benerro had given him back in Volantis.
"Then where did they learn magic?" Mufasa asked.
"Those shameless Valyrians learned magic from us, only to use it to enhance their dragons and invade our lands."
Upon hearing his words.
Mufasa looked strangely at Melisandre. She had implied that the Red Priests taught magic to the Valyrians, but according to the Meereenese, it was the sorcerers of the ancient Ghiscari Empire who taught the nomadic Valyrians how to use it.
"The Lord of Light has no followers or temples in Slaver's Bay; they have their own Temples of Grace," Melisandre stated.
"Exactly, we Ghiscari worship our own gods, and every Temple of Grace has a Green Grace," the Wise Master confirmed.
The Green Grace was the highest-ranking priestess in the Temple of Grace; below her were the Blue Graces, Red Graces, White Graces, and so on.
However, the deity they worship is the Harpy, a female goddess, which is why one class of their priestesses are the Holy Harlots. They use their bodies to help believers relax and forget their worries and sorrows.
If this practice were introduced in Westeros, it would certainly be resisted. The Citadel, the Faith, and the Crown would surely unite to oppose such Holy Harlots.
"Can this Green Grace perform prophecies or similar acts? Can she do things that ordinary people cannot?" Mufasa inquired.
"She can see the future and provide us with warnings!" the Wise Master replied.
"Then I shall have to go and see her before I leave."
"Melisandre, when the time comes, you should have a contest of magic with her and see whose prophecy is more accurate," Mufasa said, smiling at her.
"The Lord of Light possesses divine power everywhere, regardless of location!" Melisandre stated.
"What about the North?" Mufasa asked.
"The Lord of Light naturally possesses divine power in the North as well, but he lacks followers there," she replied.
Mufasa suddenly recalled a rumor and decided to ask Melisandre about it.
"Melisandre, I heard a rumor that Azor Ahai, the son of the Lord of Light, was once friends with Brandon the Builder. They lived in the same era. Brandon built the Wall, and Azor Ahai led the First Men to conquer the Long Night. Does that mean he was also a Northerner?"
"I have not heard Benerro speak of that! I only know that Azor Ahai is the son of the Lord of Light. You may call him the Son of Light."
"If Azor Ahai truly knew Brandon Stark and they ended the last Long Night together, wouldn't that suggest that the Old Gods worshipped by the North are, in fact, the Lord of Light?"
Mufasa had put forth a bold speculation.
"I do not know!" Melisandre replied.
Although she had been trained since childhood to be a servant of the Lord of Light, the education she received deliberately obscured the true origins of the Lord of Light and Azor Ahai.
Currently, the followers of the Lord of Light were primarily found in the Nine Free Cities, mainly Volantis. Slaver's Bay held no faith in the Lord of Light.
On the continent of Westeros, those south of the Neck worshipped the Seven, while the North worshipped the Old Gods.
The Seven were seven distinct aspects in one deity. The Old Gods, however, had no name and no form, existing everywhere like "blending with the light and dust," appearing as every ray of light and every particle of dust between heaven and earth.
And light was the embodiment of the Lord of Light, the Red God. Shadows, in turn, were the servants of light, for where there is light, there must be shadow.
Just as Mufasa and Melisandre were discussing matters of the gods, the Green Grace in Meereen's largest Temple of Grace received a divine oracle.
"Bring forth the warrior from distant lands! I have words I wish you to convey to him!"
Grazdan mo Kalar was over eighty years old, and thirty years had passed since she became the Green Grace. This was the fifth time she had heard a divine oracle.
She immediately summoned the other, lower-ranking Graces and instructed them to invite the warrior from distant lands to the temple.
"That man is a lion, with golden hair and green eyes! He is currently in the fighting pits with Grazdan zo Kalar," she said, her green eyes seemingly piercing through space to see Mufasa and his companions.
