Inside the Walls, the royal government commanded a total standing force of roughly 5,500 soldiers, divided into three military branches:
1. The Military Police Brigade
The elite among elites
assigned directly under the monarchy, guarding the king, handling internal security, and living safely inside Wall Sina.
Roughly 2,000 soldiers in total.
2. The Garrison Regiment
Around 3,000 soldiers, responsible for fortifying the Walls and defending towns
rarely fighting Titans directly.
Stable food, stable income, stable life.
3. The Scout Regiment
Only 500 soldiers…
but each one tempered in the fires of real Titan combat.
They carried humanity's hope
and its highest death toll.
This was exactly why Carla desperately opposed Eren joining them.
To the common people, the ideal path was obvious:
Military Police > Garrison > (never even consider) Scout Regiment.
But for anyone wanting to choose their desired branch, one prerequisite existed:
You must survive the Cadet Corps. The Cadet Corps - The Crucible
Before being assigned to a branch, every recruit trained here.
Those who performed in the top ten would earn the right to join the Military Police.
Everyone else chose between the Garrison or the Scouts…
that is, if they survived three full years of hellish training.
This was the reason Evan had pushed his body so hard for two years.
After Wall Maria fell and millions of refugees flooded Wall Rose,
food shortages pushed countless people to join
new recruits had increased several times over.
The competition was brutal.
But Evan, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin had prepared for this.
They stepped into this world carrying confidence, fear, and determination in equal measure.
Two Days Later - Arrival at the Cadet Training Grounds
After saying goodbye to Carla, the four had spent two days traveling across three districts.
Ahead of them now stood a massive, fortresslike training compound.
Dust rose in the air.
Rows of wooden buildings stretched across the grounds:
training fields, sparring pits, classrooms, barracks, canteens
and most important of all
the vertical maneuvering training zone.
A pair of tall poles connected by ropes and rigs
a crude simulation of the Omni-Directional Gear.
But it was enough to break most trainees.
New recruits poured off wagons like a human tide
nearly a thousand of them.
Evan, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin were among the crowd.
At the front gate, long tables were set up to record each trainee's information and issue their gear.
Each new soldier received:
a brown cadet jacket with the emblem of two crossed swords on a shield
crisp white uniform trousers
black combat boots
and the leather belts required to mount ODM equipment
A bald instructor with eyes cold as winter barked:
"Take your assigned dorm number! Change into uniform! Report to the training grounds IMMEDIATELY!"
His voice struck the crowd like a shockwave.
Evan picked up his uniform.
Since he and the others were all from Shiganshina, he was assigned to the same dorm as Eren and Armin.
Mikasa, of course, was assigned to the female barracks.
"Let's go," Evan muttered.
"That instructor looks like trouble. Don't get on his bad side."
Eren and Armin both nodded nervously.
The three boys headed toward their dorm
the beginning of a brutal, life-changing journey.
