Chapter 51 - Counter attack

[1st POV]

Multiple members of the Special Division of Tokyo were attacked by the Yakuza. My own teams also came under assassination attempts. Himeno, Madoka, Kobeni and so on.

The Yakuza seemed to be focusing more on Devil Hunters rather than normal staff of the Public Safety Commission. Many Devil Hunters died, even a few of my own.

Hiro was dead.

And so was Takeda.

The guy who wanted to follow his father's footsteps actually did. He became a Devil Hunter and died a Devil Hunter.

The fact that his death came from a human wounded me, though. And Takeda too, he said something about wanting his death to be meaningful, unlike his whole life. A guy who wasn't given anything in life could not even have his small wish respected.

People found his corpse on the side of the streets. Unknown mostly. His death causing only trauma and horror for the people that found him.

I shouldn't care. They were people from a fictional story I read in another life. It wasn't like we were super close or anything. They were just my subordinates and I their captain.

But somehow, their death wounded me.

Not like stabbing in the heart kind of pain. More like a splinter in your finger.

Subtle but annoyingly painful. And felt, though it may be tiny.

I ran a hand through my hair while I walked around the conference hall of the Devil Extermination Special Division 4.

The giant room was filled to the brim with people from the Division. The receptionists, the managers, the officers, the analyst team, the Devil Hunters and even the cleaners.

Everyone was in the hall. In total, around fifty or so people.

Division 4 was the branch with the least amount of casualties. Mainly because we had the least Devil Hunters and also because their main focus seemed to be me among the division.

Two lives were lost.

But everyone felt the loss of those two lives. It was like we were robbed of something precious right before our eyes.

I looked at the giant clock in the room, noting that it was nearly midnight.

"No one goes home until the Public Safety Commission deals with this threat," I said, "The Yakuza has a bone to pick with the Public Safety Commission, these attacks were not personal. Your families are not the target, it is you. But still, you should call your loved ones and tell them to stay safe,"

The whole room full of fifty people was silent. I didn't tell them to be silent or anything, everyone was feeling the weight of the situation.

"The police are already outside our building, securing the premises. The enemy this time are not devils but humans armed with guns. They should be better suited to deal with this situation than our forces," I said and stopped in front of the centre platform.

"I don't want to lose any more people from my department. You will be fired immediately if you die," I said and the people laughed. Just a small chuckle before humor died like trying to light a flame amid a storm.

"And rest assured. These fucking wannabe gangsters will not see sunrise," I said in the end, my bitterness surfacing.

The briefing of the situation and the reports about all the casualties even in the other Divisions was done already.

So I excused myself shortly after. Leaving it to Fujitora to announce how the rest should proceed. The Division building always had emergency food for times like this along with a few other essentials.

When I stepped out from the hall, I locked eyes immediately with the person I excused myself for.

"Jin," Makima said, she was standing right in front of the door. She stepped back when I came out.

Her hand hesitated once, twice and a few more times in its journey to my cheek. She held my face softly, her thumb brushing gently across its range.

"I'm so happy you are okay," she said, every word stretching to show genuine care, "I was worried,"

"Is that why you are here?" I asked while taking her hand away from my face.

I may not know a lot. But I know some things. Like how in the anime, she was hinted to be the one responsible for the whole attack and controlling the Yakuza.

Or at least, she knew it would happen.

That's how she didn't die even though she was attacked and seemingly killed.

"You wouldn't pick up your phone," she said.

"My apartment was bombed, the phone is probably ash by now," I said. I only managed to recover one item of mine. I lost everything else in that apartment.

"The higher ups are summoning all the captains and the other elite officers," she said.

"For what?"

"We are going to strike back. And we are going to do so before sunrise," she said.

I allowed myself to smile, "That's more like it,"

We headed to the headquarters as quickly as possible. By the time we arrived, the committee was already underway.

All the higher command was present. The Public Safety Commission was not playing around anymore.

Always prioritising the safety of humans and fighting Devils for them. Suffice it to say, everyone was pissed. It was literally backstabbing that the attackers did. It was betrayal.

We identified the attackers.

The Yakuza.

Not just one but different groups uniting with the sole purpose of the attack.

Their families and connections were mapped almost immediately. Their financial backers who were ignored so far were seized.

Places that held the Yakuza, or the shops and restaurants they owned, were shut down and dismantled with force.

The Public Safety Commission entered an emergency state. There was no paperwork or delays. Anything that was decided by the committee was put into action immediately, even before the meeting was over.

And after I had settled, the committee turned to the topic of a counter attack.

Complete eradication was decided without counter argument.

We weren't going to wait for the police to investigate or something. From the captured attackers, their main stronghold was already identified. We were going to take action first and question next.

With a bunch of government connections and contracted Devils, the Public Safety Commission was a nightmare.

The Yakuza were fools for even thinking about revenge.

I was assigned to be the leader of the attack. I was granted permission over all the fiends and devils that belonged to my Division but I hadn't made contact with.

The higher ups did not want me to get much influence or power since I was already a powerhouse. But in this case, they had no choice.

The Yakuza possessed firearms so it was decided that all the fiends, devils and hybrids not susceptible to bullets would be responsible for the mission to avoid more deaths of Devil Hunters.

And I was out of the committee before it was even over.

To take action as quick as possible. Before the attackers had any time to move or escape.

[1st POV]

"Why are you standing way over there?" I asked with folded arms in the gathering room of the headquarters.

I was currently gathering the counter attacking force of the Public Safety Commission. As mentioned, everyone in this room were members of the 4th Division. But I'd never really met them because of some issues from the higher ups.

This was our first meeting.

Beam, the Shark Fiend.

Galgali, the Violence Fiend.

Angel, the Angel Devil.

Princi, the Spider Devil.

I was standing in front of the door, their files in my hand. But the four devils were at the very end of the room, the furthest place from me. Their backs touched the wall as they stood frozen like statues.

They were afraid of me. I knew this because Power showed similar reaction when we first met. But still, Power was Power. I didn't think the others would show such overreaction.

It's not like I was capable of killing them permanently or anything. It's not like I was a living hell or anything. It's not like I was nearly salivating from their scent alone and my entire being was screaming at me to eat them or anything.

Oh wait.

That's exactly what I am and what I feel. Maybe they could sense that.

"Come stand here," I said, pointing in front of me.

They took a single step and paused.

"Closer,"

Another step and another pause.

"If you don't stand in front of me right now, I will do exactly what you fear to you," I said again and this time, everyone came close to me. They stood right where I wanted them to stand.

"That's better," I nodded, "My name is Jin Nakahara, also known as the Pig Devil. I am the leader of the Devil Extermination Special Division 4. Which means that I am your boss,"

They gulped. Galgali and Beam seemed to be most affected. Princi was mostly stoic and so was Angel. But the femboy had sweat running down her head.

"I want everyone here to follow orders. No one should step out of line," I said, "I suppose everyone knows about your mission already. We are going out to kill the Yakuza in a few moments,"

"Just know that this whole thing is very personal to me. The Yakuza had given me a hard time years ago and now they decided to fuck with me again. So whoever kills the most Yakuza and give them horrible deaths will be in my good graces," I said.

They nodded at my words.

"I already know every single one of you from your files," I said, showing them the paper in my hand, "So introductions will not be needed. There will be three more people joining us in this mission and we will meet them where the mission will take place,"

Obviously Aki, Power and Denji were included for this operation.

"I know everyone here has a bad feeling about me. I know that to a certain extent, you fear me," I said, "And that's good. Really, that's good,"

"It means you have sharp instincts. And if you fear me, you will do well to not cross me," I said and let silence push down my words into their hearts.

"Is everyone ready?"

"Yes," they replied.

"Then just for tonight, go be devils for the Yakuza,"

....

The whole operation went smoothly. It was like raiding a kindergarten to be completely honest.

The main villains in the anime were already dead. What we were left with were a bunch of Yakuza with guns that didn't work on entities that could heal.

If this was a story, it probably wouldn't even deserve a chapter.

The Public Safety Commission members had already surrounded the building when we arrived. The enemies were just meat in a pot. We entered the building from all six entrances and made our way up the building and cleaning out the floors in the process.

I went through the main entrance alone, killing and eating anyone who possessed guns and shot at me. The others, I tied them up in vines. I wasn't sure whether those were from the Yakuza or just workers.

Basically, all that were ready to kill me, I killed them.

And yes, I ate them. I wasn't quite sure why I did that. My hunger was always there, the urge was always there. But tonight, I didn't hold back.

These Yakuza had probably eaten my flesh too. So it was fair that I ate them in return.

The whole operation was executed with no casualty on our side and a total arrest and annihilation of the perpetrators.

It lasted less than an hour.

After reporting back to the headquarters, we were dismissed. The staff who I instructed to remain in the building were also released now that the threat was neutralized.

At around 3 am in the morning, I was done with work. Aki, Power and Denji followed me to a hotel where we booked rooms. I booked a single room for myself and a family room for Aki and his children.

At around 3:30 am, I was asleep.

I had something to do tomorrow after all.
