Chapter 173 - The Shape of the Self

CHAPTER 173 — The Shape of the Self

---

1. The Third Phase Reveals Itself

The Grand Trial Platform did not dissolve this time.

Instead, the air grew still.

Too still.

Lin felt it immediately—the absence of pressure, of threat, of opposition. The abyssal presence that had weighed on his senses receded, leaving behind an uncanny calm that set his instincts on edge.

This was not peace.

This was anticipation.

The Sect Master stood before them, hands clasped behind his back, his gaze sweeping slowly across the survivors of the second phase.

"You have faced pressure," Xuanyang said.

"You have faced temptation."

He paused.

"Now you will face yourself."

The runes beneath their feet flared once—then vanished.

The world went white.

2. Lin Faces the Question He Can't Ignore

Lin found himself standing alone.

Not in the Abyss.

Not in the Titan Realm.

He stood on familiar ground.

Concrete beneath his feet.

Steel and glass rising around him.

A sky streaked with aircraft trails.

Earth.

His breath caught.

Cars moved in the distance. People walked past him, laughing, arguing, living. None of them noticed him.

None of them could.

A voice—not the Sect Master's—echoed gently.

> "This is where you began."

Lin turned.

A version of himself stood nearby.

Younger.

Tired.

Wearing worn clothes, eyes dulled by routine and resignation.

"Is this what you want to return to?" the younger Lin asked quietly. "A life where you understand the universe but can't touch it?"

Lin's chest tightened.

He remembered this man.

The nights staring at equations, knowing how gravity worked but powerless to stop disasters. Knowing truths without the strength to act.

"I didn't leave because I hated this world," Lin said softly.

"I left because I couldn't protect it."

The younger Lin tilted his head.

"And now? You build worlds. You wield laws. You command dragons."

He gestured around them.

"Will you rule like a god… or walk among them like a man?"

Lin was silent for a long time.

Then he answered.

"I will rule when I must," he said.

"And walk when I can."

The city around them began to fade.

The younger Lin smiled faintly.

"Then don't forget what it feels like to be powerless."

Lin bowed his head.

"I won't."

The illusion shattered.

3. Tian Faces the Shadow of Pride

Tian stood atop a vast battlefield.

Lightning scorched the ground in every direction.

At his feet lay defeated enemies—countless, broken, insignificant.

Thunder roared overhead, responding eagerly to his presence.

A voice echoed from the storm.

> "You could stand above all others."

A figure emerged from the lightning.

Taller.

Broader.

Eyes burning with unrestrained arrogance.

A future Tian.

"Why hold back?" the figure snarled. "Why temper yourself? Strength exists to dominate."

The future Tian lifted a hand.

Lightning obeyed instantly—flattening mountains, shattering armies.

Tian clenched his fists.

"I like being strong," he admitted. "But I don't want to be alone."

The future Tian scoffed.

"Loneliness is the price of supremacy."

Tian shook his head.

"No. It's the excuse."

He stepped forward.

The lightning calmed.

The battlefield dimmed.

"I'll be strong enough to protect," Tian said.

"And disciplined enough not to become what I hate."

The future Tian's form cracked—then dissolved into harmless sparks.

Tian exhaled slowly.

"…Good. That felt important."

4. Yueyin Faces the Choice of Silence

Yueyin stood in a mirror-lined hall.

Each reflection showed a different version of herself.

One wore phoenix fire like a crown.

One was chained in shadow.

One knelt before an abyssal throne.

One stood alone, burned and broken.

A whisper echoed through the hall.

"Choose who you are."

Yueyin trembled.

Her instinct screamed to hide—to choose the reflection that survived quietly, unnoticed, unseen.

But then she remembered Lin stabilizing gravity around her.

Tian fighting without hesitation.

Xuanran telling her sorrow could become strength.

She stepped forward.

Placed her palm against the mirror showing her chained self.

"I am not what was done to me," she said softly.

Cracks spread across the glass.

The mirrors shattered one by one—except one.

The version of Yueyin standing tall, phoenix fire restrained but resolute.

She met her own gaze.

"I will decide my own freedom."

The hall dissolved.

5. The Sect Master Watches Closely

The disciples reappeared on the Grand Trial Platform.

Some wept quietly.

Some stood in stunned silence.

Some looked lighter—like burdens had shifted, if not vanished.

Xuanyang observed them all.

When his gaze reached Lin, it lingered.

Not with scrutiny.

With recognition.

"You have answered the most dangerous question a cultivator can face," Xuanyang said.

"And what question is that?" Lin asked quietly.

Xuanyang's voice was solemn.

> "Who will you become when no one is watching?"

Lin bowed deeply.

6. The Trial's True Purpose

Xuanyang raised his hand.

"The trial is complete."

A ripple of astonishment ran through the platform.

"This was not to test your strength," the Sect Master continued.

"It was to determine whether you should be allowed to continue growing."

He looked toward the abyssal rift in the distance.

"The Abyss is patient.

It corrupts not through force alone—but through identity."

His gaze returned to Lin, Tian, and Yueyin.

"You three will walk dangerous paths.

Know who you are—

Or the Abyss will decide for you."

Far beyond the Titan Realm, something ancient paused.

The Abyss felt… resistance.

And it did not like it.
