On the walls of Castle Black, time stopped.

Every Night's Watchman clung to the battlements, eyes bulging, hearts forgetting to beat.

What had just happened?

Outside the Wall, that white sea of death, a tide of endless corpses stretching to the horizon, had simply gone still.

Then the sight that broke every living man's courage arrived.

CRACK!

The wight nearest the Night King stiffly twisted its neck.

Its hollow eye sockets were no longer aimed at the Wall. They turned, slowly, toward the supreme king standing behind it.

CRACK. CRACK CRACK. Like a single command detonating a chain reaction through the entire death legion.

The second. The third. The ten-thousandth.

Thousands upon thousands of wights, a boundless army with no visible end, moved as if guided by one invisible hand. They turned around in perfect unison.

Tens of millions of eyes, each burning with pale blue ghost-fire, locked simultaneously onto the only one who had made them , their absolute master.

The Night King.

"Gods... gods..."

On the wall, an old Night's Watchman's legs gave out. He dropped to his knees, his whole body shaking so hard he couldn't hold himself upright.

What stood before them had outpaced every version of fear they had ever imagined.

Miranda's knuckles had gone white around her longbow, her palms soaked through with cold sweat.

She stared at the man standing before tens of millions of wights. Couldn't look away.

One snap of his fingers.

Just one snap of his fingers, and this world-ending plague of the dead had switched sides mid-battle.

That was not mortal power.

That was a god.

A true god, walking the earth.

At the front of the sea of death, the Night King sat astride its undead warhorse. On that eternally frozen face, for the first time, something that might be called bewilderment surfaced.

It could not understand.

Eight thousand years of accumulation. The will of tens of millions of dead, all branded with the imprint of its soul.

It was their absolute master.

Why?

Why had they turned?!

Its gaze drove through the sea of death that had defected, and fixed, hard, on the man standing there with an expression of perfect calm.

Him.

He had used ice magic stronger than its own, a force more irresistible , and in an instant, stripped it of control over the entire undead legion.

Annihilating fury and killing intent detonated from the Night King.

But before it could act.

A more overwhelming will crossed the void and drove itself into its mind like a hammer.

Not words. An image.

A crow burning with deep blue ice-fire, shrieking in agony. An invisible hand seizing its soul. And then, slowly, methodically, grinding it down until there was nothing left , not even dust.

[He is dead.]

Lin En's thought carried no emotion at all.

The Night King's pale blue eyes, burning for millennia, contracted violently.

Him.

The one responsible for reducing it to this — neither man nor ghost.

The one lurking beneath the weirwood roots, fancying himself the chessmaster of fate.

The Three-Eyed Raven.

Dead?

Impossible. That old monster's soul had long since fused with what had once been its own body, woven into the weirwood network of the entire world. As long as a single weirwood remained standing anywhere, it was unkillable.

Unless...

The Night King's gaze returned to Lin En.

Now it saw clearly.

Deep within this man's soul, a trace of the Three-Eyed Raven's presence did remain. But it was not fusion. It was not possession. It was the kind of trace left after something had been completely devoured and digested , too faint to even be called residue.

The Night King went silent.

That vast killing intent, cold enough to freeze the world, deflated like a punctured bladder and quietly dispersed.

The hatred and fury that had burned in those pale eyes for thousands of years guttered out, bit by bit.

What replaced them was exhaustion, bone-deep. And something else , a relief so profound it looked almost like peace.

Its war was over.

Its revenge, sustained across millennia. Its lonely, desperate mission. It had all ended in a way it had never once imagined possible.

Lin En felt the killing intent recede.

So his read had been right.

The Night King was never a born destroyer of worlds. It was more like an obsessive avenger. Now its vengeance was complete, and the obsession had nothing left to hold.

It was not his enemy.

Lin En raised his hand slowly and gave a single calm wave toward the sea of wights still locked in their battle stance.

SWISH!

Tens of millions of wights turned as one, facing the Wall again.

But the suffocating pressure was gone. They simply stood still and patient , an army waiting for a new king's review.

The Night King moved.

It urged its undead warhorse forward, walking slowly toward Lin En. The army of wights before it parted like a tide, opening a corridor for their old king , a road that led straight to the new god.

"He — he's coming!"

"What does he want?!"

The Night's Watchmen on the wall broke into fresh panic.

Miranda stepped in front of Lin En on instinct, longbow drawn to a full pull, killing intent open and unmasked.

"He's not an enemy. And at this level..." Lin En's voice was quiet, unhurried. "He's no match for me."

Miranda's body stiffened. She lowered the bow and stepped aside.

The Night King stopped less than ten paces from Lin En and dismounted.

Its tall frame cast a long shadow across him.

It looked at Lin En. Then it slowly raised one hand and pointed to the Valyrian steel sword at his hip.

Dark Sister.

A thought settled into Lin En's mind.

[This sword... it once belonged to me. Brynden Rivers.]

So it was him.

Bloodraven. Targaryen bastard. Former Hand of the King. Former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

"Want it back?" Lin En asked, his hand resting on the hilt.

The Night King shook its head, slowly.

A flicker of something , acceptance, maybe — moved through those pale blue eyes.

[It is no longer mine.]

[It belongs to the one who can end all this.]

The Night King turned, reached to the saddle of its undead warhorse, and retrieved something.

A longbow.

Snow-white from end to end, as though carved from ten-thousand-year-old ice.

But it wasn't ice.

It was weirwood heartwood , the oldest, hardest, a source of magic in its purest form. Ancient runes drifted across the bow's surface like living things, slow and fluid. A vast, wild force rolled off it in waves.

The Night King held the bow in both hands and extended it toward Lin En.

[Yours.]

[A gift from the Old Gods.]

Lin En didn't hesitate. He reached out and took it.

The moment the longbow settled into his grip, a cold and strangely smooth sensation spread through his hand. The natural magic inside him surged instantly, resonating with the bow in a deep, full-body pulse.

He could even hear it , somewhere inside the bow, a bow-spirit that had slept for a thousand years was waking up.

[Ding! Legendary weapon obtained: Weirwood Divine Bow!]

[Heart of Winter: Greatly amplifies elemental magic including natural magic, fire magic, and ice magic. Automatically generates magically infused arrows (ice arrows, vine arrows, explosive arrows...). Possesses self-repair and growth capabilities.]

Lin En stored the bow and gave the Night King a nod.

"Thank you."

The Night King did not move.

It turned its head slowly and looked out toward the Land of Always Winter , the land where it had existed for thousands of years.

Its war was over. Its mission, complete.

But now , where could it go?

There was no longer a place for it in this world.

Lin En watched its solitary, desolate silhouette. After a moment, he spoke.

"Want to see what a world without the Three-Eyed Raven looks like?"

The Night King's body went still for just a breath.

Then it raised its head.

A world without the Three-Eyed Raven.

Lin En said nothing more. He turned and walked toward the Wall.

"Come on. Your wights draw too much attention."

The Night King was quiet for a long moment.

Then, slowly, it rose, mounted its horse, and followed silently in Lin En's wake.

Behind it, the sea of wights moved with their king, drifting steadily back toward the Land of Always Winter.

On the wall above, the Night's Watchmen had lost all composure entirely.

They stared at Lin En the way men stare at a living god.

He had halted the army of the dead single-handedly. And now he was walking back toward the Wall , with the terrifying Ice King and his million-strong horde trailing behind him like a retinue.

Then the Night King suddenly raised one arm, pointing toward the deepest reaches of the Land of Always Winter.

Its ancient, exhausted thought surfaced one more time in Lin En's mind.

[Follow me.]

[I will take you somewhere.]

[That place is where I began.]

The thought paused.

Lin En's footsteps stopped.
