Chapter 92 - Chapter 91: The Chase

Chapter 91: The Chase

Steve

The abandoned warehouse district at noon should have felt safe—broad daylight, open spaces, visibility for miles.

But Flayed Heather emerged from the shadows anyway, followed by wrong movements and clicking sounds.

"Running again, traveler?" Her voice layered with the Mind Flayer's presence. "You can't escape what I'm becoming."

Fight Master Phase 3 calculated escape routes automatically. Three exits, two skylights, multiple obstacles to exploit.

I ran.

Dustin

Steve's radio crackled to life. "Dustin, tracking active. Warehouse district, pursuing single Flayed. Need backup at coordinates—" he rattled off numbers "—in fifteen minutes."

"Copy. Alerting Hopper."

"Don't engage. Just positioning. I'm testing her limits, learning capabilities." Background sounds of running, breathing, something crashing. "She's fast. Stronger than human. Doesn't tire."

"Steve, get out of there—"

"That's the plan. But knowledge first, safety second." Another crash. "Always."

He was insane. Brilliant, but insane.

Steve

I threw a metal shelving unit across Heather's path. Normal human would dodge or stop.

She crashed through it. Metal shrieking, momentum barely slowing.

Enhanced strength. No pain response. Complete motor control override.

Climbed to the second floor via external ladder. Heather followed, scaling the building with movements too fluid, too coordinated.

Superhuman climbing. Ignores normal human limitations.

"Heather!" I tried reasoning. "I know you're still in there. Fight it!"

Her head tilted wrong angle. "SHE'S SCREAMING. ALWAYS SCREAMING. BUT I MUFFLE IT. MAKE IT DISTANT. BEARABLE." The Mind Flayer's voice. "YOU COULD JOIN HER. STOP FIGHTING. LET ME IN. YOUR CORRUPTION ALREADY MAKES YOU MINE."

"Never."

"WE'LL SEE."

Heather

I was still there. Still Heather. Trapped passenger watching my body hunt Steve Harrington through abandoned warehouses.

He's trying to understand. Testing my limits. Gathering intelligence.

The Mind Flayer felt my recognition. "CLEVER GIRL. HE IS LEARNING. BUT LEARNING TAKES TIME. AND I'M PATIENT."

Why me? Why did you choose me?

"BECAUSE YOU WERE DROWNING. BECAUSE THE PAIN MADE YOU VULNERABLE. BECAUSE STEVE HARRINGTON COULDN'T SAVE EVERYONE."

The truth hurt worse than possession. I'd been collateral damage in Steve's obsessive attempt to save Billy.

Steve

Three more Flayed emerged from side doors. Former Hawkins residents I didn't recognize—a middle-aged man, teenage girl, elderly woman. All moving with wrong-jointed coordination.

"You thought Heather was the first?" All four spoke simultaneously, Mind Flayer voice layered through them. "I've been spreading quietly. Days of possession you never detected. Learning your patterns. Studying your team."

Four hosts. Minimum. Possibly more hidden throughout Hawkins.

Exponential growth. Just like canon. But faster because it's specifically targeting people connected to me.

I activated Night Vision Goggles—my seventh item from the Backpack. Smashed the warehouse lights with thrown debris.

Darkness fell. My NVGs adjusted instantly. The Flayed stumbled, disoriented by sudden darkness.

Good. Light dependency. Weakness to exploit.

Robin

Monitored Steve's position via GPS tracker embedded in his watch. He moved through the industrial district in calculated pattern—leading pursuit away from residential zones, toward Hopper's positioned backup.

"He's heading your way, Chief," I radioed. "Four hostiles following. All Flayed."

"Acknowledged. Setting up roadblock." Hopper's voice was calm. "Is he okay?"

"Physically? Yes. Mentally? He's testing enemy capabilities while being chased by possessed humans. So, normal Steve."

"That's deeply concerning."

"That's our reality."

Steve

The park boundary approached—open grass, sunlight, Hopper's cruiser visible in distance.

The Flayed stopped at the tree line. All four bodies freezing simultaneously, like puppets whose strings had been cut.

"Run, traveler." The Mind Flayer spoke through all of them. "I'll find you when I'm ready. When I understand you fully. When I've built enough to take you properly."

They retreated into shadows. Coordinated, purposeful, patient.

It's not trying to catch me yet. Just studying. Learning. Preparing.

I reached Hopper's cruiser, exhausted and data-rich.

"Four hosts," I reported. "Enhanced strength, no pain response, coordinated by hive mind. Light sensitive, possibly vulnerable to disruption of biomass anchor. And it's specifically studying me—wants to understand what I am before attempting possession."

Hopper stared. "That thing wants to understand you. What does it mean?"

"Means we need to change the music." I climbed into the cruiser. "And accelerate the Russian operation takedown. If both threats converge on me simultaneously, I'm dead."

Hopper

Drove Steve back to his bunker. Kid looked like hell—corruption scars bright red, Phase 3 abilities leaving him twitchy, exhaustion written in every line.

"You're pushing too hard," I said.

"I'm pushing exactly as hard as necessary. Two apocalypses require two-apocalypse effort."

"You're going to burn out."

"Maybe. But everyone else survives. That's the deal." He touched his scars. "I became this—corrupted, enhanced, barely human—to save people. Can't stop now just because it's hard."

"Steve—"

"We have four confirmed Flayed, possibly more. Russians test their gate machine in days. The Mind Flayer is building toward full manifestation." His voice cracked. "I don't have time to rest. I have time to fight, to plan, to somehow win despite impossible odds. That's it."

I drove in silence, knowing nothing I said would change his mind.

The kid had chosen martyrdom disguised as strategy. And we all depended on it working.
