The only sound you could hear in the room was the sound of us sobbing. Our voices overlapped, uneven and raw, filling the room until. It was a sobbing mess. None of us could stop crying.
The room felt small despite its size, the walls pressing in as if they were closing around us. My chest hurts from the weight of everything I had been holding inside finally spilling over. My hands trembled in my lap, fingers curling uselessly as tears streamed down my face without pause.
Jamie was the first to reach me. He moved quickly, as though afraid that if he hesitated even for a second, I might slip away. His arms wrapped around me tightly, pulling me against his chest. The force of the hug knocked the breath out of me, but I didn't protest. If anything, I leaned into it, clinging to him like he was the only solid thing left in the world.
"I'm so sorry," Jamie cried, hugging me. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."
