Chapter 89 - Rule No. 90: Don’t Step Back When It Finally Happens

There are moments you rehearse in your head.

And then there are moments that arrive unannounced.

It was late.

Too late for campus noise.

Too quiet for distractions.

They were sitting in his car after dropping a friend home. The city outside felt softer at night—less demanding.

Aira was talking about something random again. She did that when she was nervous.

Reyhan wasn't replying much.

He was listening. Watching.

Not interrupting.

"You're quiet," she said finally.

"Thinking."

"Dangerous."

He smiled faintly.

"You don't get scared anymore," he said.

She looked at him.

"Of what?"

"Of me staying."

The truth of that landed gently.

"I don't," she admitted.

Silence followed.

Not awkward.

Just full.

Reyhan reached out slowly and brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't urgent.

It was careful.

Aira didn't move.

Didn't pull back.

Didn't make it lighter with a joke.

She just looked at him.

There was a question in his eyes.

And for once, she didn't look away from it.

"If I do this," he said quietly,

"I don't want you thinking it's impulsive."

Her heart shifted.

"Then don't make it impulsive," she whispered.

He leaned in slowly.

Not fast.

Not rushed.

Enough time for her to change her mind.

She didn't.

When his lips met hers, it wasn't intense.

It wasn't hungry.

It was steady.

Like something that had been building quietly for months.

Aira felt the world narrow—not disappear.

Just focus.

His hand stayed light against her cheek, not demanding more.

When they pulled back, it wasn't abrupt.

Just enough to breathe.

She searched his expression.

No regret.

No uncertainty.

Just calm.

"That wasn't impulsive," he said softly.

"No," she replied.

It wasn't fireworks.

It wasn't dramatic music.

It was something better.

It was right.

She leaned her forehead against his.

And this time, neither of them said anything clever.

They didn't need to.

Later that night, Aira didn't write immediately.

She sat with the memory first.

Then finally—

RULE #90: Don't step back when it finally happens.

If it feels steady,

let it stay steady.
