Chapter 4 - A Mind Sharper Than Shadows

The forest loomed in front of them—twisted black trees, glitching bark, roots crawling like frozen snakes. The Darkwoods felt alive in the wrong way, as if Nexum was holding something inside it.

Wade stepped forward first.

Emma hesitated. "Do you ever think twice before diving into danger?"

"I think thousands of times," Wade said. "Just very quickly."

She muttered, "Genius, my ass…"

He almost smiled. Almost.

Inside the forest, the temperature dropped. The air vibrated with static. Glitches slid across the ground like digital insects.

Emma's flame flickered nervously.

"Something's watching," she whispered.

"Several things," Wade corrected.

"You can sense them?"

"I can think."

Emma rolled her eyes. "You really like reminding people how smart you are."

"I don't remind," Wade said. "I inform."

The trees rustled—slow, deliberate.

Wade's daggers slipped into his hands with fluid ease.

Emma swallowed. "Wade…?"

He stepped forward, smirk barely visible beneath his hood.

"Let them come."
