Chapter 127 - Chapter 127: Niten Ichi-ryu

The battle erupted with a violence that shook the flooded streets.

Dagon, born of humanity's hatred for the ocean, had never known fear. It was the sea's wrath made flesh—the drowning depths, the crushing pressure, the endless dark where light went to die. For centuries, it had grown in the cursed womb, fed by the terror of sailors and the grief of those lost to waves.

Then Kenjaku came.

The ancient schemer had shown Dagon how to accelerate its growth. Fear was the currency of Cursed Spirits, and Kenjaku knew how to mint it. The "Dragon Crab War." The oarfish strandings. The rumors of earthquakes and volcanoes and doom. All of it designed to make humanity afraid—of the sea, of the sky, of the very earth beneath their feet.

And Dagon had feasted.

The cursed womb had swelled. The form within had matured. And now, for the first time, Dagon stood fully evolved, its power sufficient to summon a tsunami that could swallow a city.

It should have been unstoppable.

But as Fushiguro Toji stood before it, blades in hand, chain singing, Dagon felt something it had never felt before.

Doubt.

"You're not even worth my full attention."

Dagon's voice rolled across the water like thunder. It did not move from its position, did not deign to approach the man who stood on the surface of the sea as if it were solid ground. Instead, it reached into its abdomen, where the darkness pulsed, and pulled.

A shape emerged— serpentine, massive, its body a writhing coil of muscle and scale. It had no eyes, only a mouth that split its head from tip to tail, lined with teeth that could shred steel.

"Kill him," Dagon commanded.

The snake-fish lunged.

Toji did not move. Did not flinch. Did not even blink. He waited until the jaws were close enough to feel the heat of its breath, the stench of its hunger.

Then his left hand moved.

The soul-releasing blade carved an arc through the air—clean, precise, final. The snake-fish's head separated from its body, and both halves splashed into the water before they could dissolve, severed so quickly that the creature's nervous system had not yet registered its own death.

Dagon froze.

'Impossible.'

It had sensed no cursed energy from this man. He was a void, a nothing, a hole in the world where power should have been. Dagon had assumed he was an ordinary human who had wandered into a battle he could not comprehend.

The man was already moving.

One moment he stood on the water, blades dripping. The next, he was there, his right hand swinging, the spirit-slaying sword singing toward Dagon's face.

Dagon raised its arm to block. The blade bit deep—and kept going.

Snap.

The arm fell. Blood that was not blood sprayed across the water. Dagon stared at the stump, waiting for regeneration, for the cursed energy to knit flesh and bone.

Nothing happened.

The wound pulsed with a wrongness that made Dagon's mind stutter. The cursed energy that should have healed was gone, absorbed, devoured, erased.

Dagon looked at the sword in the man's hand. At the way it gleamed with light that should not exist.

"What... what is that?"

Fushiguro Toji smiled. It was not a kind smile.

"It's called a spirit-slaying sword. Kamo Itsuki made it." He twirled the blade, testing its weight. "You know what it does?"

Dagon did not answer. It was already summoning more Shikigami.

"It puts us on even ground." Toji's voice was almost conversational. "You Cursed Spirits regenerate. We don't. That always seemed a little unfair, don't you think?"

The piranhas erupted from the water—a school of them, thousands strong, each one a mouth filled with razors. They swarmed toward Toji like a black tide, their bodies churning the sea to foam.

Toji's blades became light.

The soul-releasing blade swung left, carving a path through the swarm. The spirit-slaying sword swung right, exploding the fish it touched into mist. Water fountained. Bodies scattered. In seconds, the piranha school was gone, and Toji stood in the center of the carnage, barely breathing hard.

Dagon retreated, putting distance between them, trying to think.

'This is not a man. This is a weapon wearing flesh.'

It summoned water snakes from the depths—dozens of them, each one thick as a python, their bodies slick with cursed energy. They coiled around Toji's legs, his arms, his chest, dragging him under the surface.

Beneath the waves, Dagon's true servants waited.

Three creatures rose from the murk—Shikigami shaped like lice, but scaled to nightmare proportions. Their carapaces were thick enough to deflect cannon fire. Their mouthparts were scythes, designed to carve flesh from bone.

They surrounded Toji, closing in from three directions, jaws gaping.

Dagon allowed itself to hope.

Toji grinned.

The water snakes exploded. Toji's arms flexed, and the coils that had held him shredded like wet paper. He was free, spinning, blades extended, meeting the first louse-Shikigami head-on.

The spirit-slaying sword screamed.

It cut through carapace that should have been impenetrable, splitting the creature from snout to tail. Black ichor fountained. The second louse lunged—Toji's left hand came up, the soul-releasing blade catching it mid-lunge, redirecting its momentum into the third.

They crashed together, tangled, helpless.

Toji landed on the water's surface, breathing steady, eyes fixed on Dagon.

"You're running out of tricks," he said.

Dagon's remaining hand clenched into a fist. Its heart—if it had one—pounded with something that felt like fear.

'This cannot be. I am the sea. I am the storm. I am—'

"You're just a curse," Toji said, as if reading its thoughts. "And I've killed a lot of curses."

He began to walk forward, blades trailing in the water, chain singing its soft, deadly song.

Dagon had one move left. One final card to play.

It would have to be enough.

The battle reached its crescendo on the surface of the flooded city.

Toji's blades moved like extensions of his will. The soul-releasing blade found the second louse-Shikigami's core, and the creature's soul simply detached, leaving its body to collapse bonelessly onto the water. The third creature fared worse—Toji didn't even bother cutting it. The Chain of a Thousand Miles whipped out, wrapped around its massive form, and yanked. The creature came apart like wet paper, its pieces scattering across the waves.

Dagon watched from a distance, frozen in something beyond shock.

'What is this creature? No cursed energy. No technique. Just... flesh and steel.'

There was no time to understand. Toji was already moving again, water exploding behind him as he surged forward.

Dagon's hands moved desperately, carving a cursed seal into its own abdomen. The mark glowed with malevolent light—Dagon's trump card, its last hope.

As Toji closed the distance, Dagon raised its remaining arm. Water answered, rising from the sea to form an impenetrable barrier between them. The wall was thick as a tsunami, dense as compressed time. Toji's advance stalled—just for a moment, but a moment was enough.

The world shifted.

Toji stood on a tropical beach. Sunlight warmed his skin. Gentle waves lapped at his feet. Seagulls cried in the distance. Everything was peaceful, beautiful, real.

And Dagon was the master of it all.

"Guaranteed hit," Dagon snarled, already summoning its next attack. A giant shark Shikigami materialized in the air, jaws gaping, descending toward Toji with the force of a meteor.

'Now die.'

The shark struck.

Toji's left hand moved.

The soul-releasing blade carved through the shark's skull like a knife through butter. The creature's body split cleanly in two, passing around Toji on either side, crashing into the sand without touching him.

Dagon's eyes bulged.

'Why? The Domain's sure-hit effect—it should have been unavoidable. Why couldn't it lock onto him?'

But there was no time to question. Toji was walking forward now, across the sand, across the waves, across the very fabric of Dagon's Domain. Each step was measured, inevitable, terrifying.

Dagon had one card left. One final technique.

The ocean answered.

From every direction, from the depths of the Domain's simulated sea, from the shadows beneath the waves, they came. Giant deep-sea carnivores—fish with teeth like swords, eyes like voids, bodies built to crush and consume. They swarmed toward Toji in a black tide, a wall of hunger and hatred.

Toji stopped walking.

He planted his feet on the water's surface. He took a slow breath. He raised both blades—soul-releasing in his left hand, spirit-slaying in his right—and held them before him like wings unfurling.

He moved.

The blades became light. Silver dragons dancing through the school of death, carving paths through flesh and bone. Each swing was precise, economical, lethal. The fish that had come to devour found themselves diced, sliced, bisected, destroyed. Blood clouded the water. Bodies rained down like hail.

And through it all, Toji advanced.

Dagon watched its army dissolve, watched the man walk through the slaughter untouched, and felt something it had never felt before.

Fear.

Toji's blades converged. The twin arcs of silver light met before Dagon's chest, crossed, and pushed.

The shockwave tore through the remaining fish, through the Domain's fabric, through Dagon's defenses. A blade of pure light carved through the Cursed Spirit's abdomen, opening a wound that split it nearly in two.

Dagon looked down at the hole where its stomach had been. It felt its power draining, its Domain collapsing, its existence beginning to fray.

It looked up at the man who had killed it.

"I... was born of the sea's hatred..." Dagon's voice was a whisper now, fading. "How could a mere man... defeat the ocean itself...?"

Toji lowered his blades. His breathing was steady. His eyes were calm.

"You're not the ocean," he said. "You're just a curse. And curses..."

He turned away as Dagon's body began to dissolve, black ash scattering on the wind.

"...can be cut."

The Domain shattered. Reality reasserted itself—Yokohama, flooded but receding, the water already beginning to drain from the streets. Buildings stood scarred but standing. The guardian barrier pulsed steadily behind them.

Kamo Itsuki's clone watched Toji emerge from the dying light, blades still in hand, expression unchanged.

"Not bad," the clone said.

Toji grunted. "He was weak."

"He was Special Grade."

"He was slow." Toji began coiling the Chain of a Thousand Miles, preparing for the next battle. "If that's the best Kenjaku could empower, we have nothing to worry about."

Kamo's clone didn't argue. He simply looked at the receding water, at the devastated city, at the thousands of unconscious civilians still safe within the barrier.

"One down," he murmured.

Toji followed his gaze. "How many more?"

"Enough."

On the barrier's edge, Fushiguro Megumi watched his father return. His hands were clenched at his sides. His eyes were burning.

'Close combat,' he thought. 'That's what I need. That's what I'll master.'

He had witnessed a man without cursed energy defeat a Special Grade Cursed Spirit in its own Domain. He had seen what true strength looked like.

And he wanted it for himself.

The water continued to recede. The sun began to break through the clouds. The battle for Yokohama was over.

But the war was far from finished.
