Chapter 179 — The Fall of the Wall

"Jon… look. Is that the Night King?"

Jon had just cut down another wight when Ygritte, covering him with arrows, suddenly spoke.

Jon followed the direction of her finger.

Beyond arrow range stood the Night King, flanked by several White Walkers. One of them handed him something massive—curved, like a great horn.

Jon crushed a wight underfoot, his gaze locking onto the object.

A memory surfaced.

Maester Aemon Targaryen had once told him and Sam a legend:

Beyond the Wall existed a horn—the Horn of Winter.

When it was blown… the Wall would fall.

He had always dismissed it as myth.

But now—

That enormous horn rested in the Night King's hands.

A deep, resonant blast tore through the air.

Jon felt it like a physical force—a wave pressing against his body.

Still fighting, he kept one eye on the Wall, ready to order a retreat at the first sign of collapse.

One minute passed.

The Wall still stood.

But—

More wights were climbing.

Far more.

Jon glanced across the defenses.

It wasn't just his section—the numbers had surged everywhere.

"Jon! The blue light—it's gone!"

Ygritte noticed it first.

Jon spared a glance downward—

The Wall, once glowing faintly with icy blue magic, now showed only the pale white of frozen ice.

And the wights—

They blanketed it in thick layers.

"Magic… the magic is gone!" Jon realized instantly.

The Horn of Winter hadn't shattered the Wall—

It had erased the ancient enchantments woven into its foundation.

Without that magic, the Wall was just ice.

Two hundred meters high—

But no longer untouchable.

Without the burning force to destroy them, the wights climbed unimpeded, their numbers overwhelming.

Within ten minutes of the horn's blast—

The number of wights reaching the top tripled… even quadrupled.

Even wielding Longclaw, Jon could barely hold his ground.

Elsewhere, the defenders were already being overrun.

"Your Grace!"

A shout rang out nearby.

Jon turned—

About thirty meters away, Stannis had fallen to one knee, clutching his left side, blood pouring through his fingers.

Wights swarmed around him, held back only by a handful of guards.

Jon cut his way through the press, forcing a path toward him.

"Jon…" Stannis said through clenched teeth, pressing down on the wound. "The Wall… cannot hold. Order the retreat."

Jon's heart sank.

"Your Grace—what happened?!"

Stannis was about to answer when Melisandre rushed over, her red robes whipping in the wind as she reached Stannis Baratheon's side.

She had been inside Castle Black moments ago. The horn's blast—and the sudden weakening of the Wall's magic—had drawn her out at once. Now she stood over Stannis, alarm clear on her face.

Stannis glanced at her, something flickering in his eyes—attachment… and doubt.

Moments earlier, he and his guards had been overwhelmed by the surge of wights. In the chaos, one half-dead creature had driven a blade into his left side.

As he felt his strength ebbing away, memories of every setback since claiming his crown flooded in. For the first time in a long while, he questioned it all—his destiny as the chosen king, and the truth of the Lord of Light that Melisandre served.

The guards lifted him, half-conscious, and began carrying him down from The Wall.

Melisandre did not follow.

She believed the wound would not claim him—that he would endure.

Instead, she stepped toward a soldier, seized his sword, pressed her hand along the blade, and began to chant.

A breath later—

Flames erupted.

The sword ignited, and with it, countless others across the Wall—every non-dragonglass weapon in the hands of soldiers and brothers of the Night's Watch burned with living fire.

With flame added to their arsenal, the defenders clawed back a sliver of ground.

Under Jon's orders, they fought as they fell back, retreating step by step from the Wall.

But it wasn't enough.

Without the ancient magic to weaken the dead, even thirty thousand defenders could not hold against the tide.

"The Wall is lost," Jon said grimly. "Release all ravens—send word to every lord. The Wall has fallen. We need aid."

Then he turned and retreated with the rest.

Back at Castle Black, chaos had already taken hold. Jon searched until he found Bran Stark and Rickon Stark.

Long before this moment, Jon and Stannis had prepared for the worst. When the Night King showed his willingness to sacrifice endless wights—and then paused for two days—they knew a retreat might become inevitable.

Now it had.

Meera rode with Bran. Osha took Rickon. Jon and Ygritte each mounted their own horses.

The Children of the Forest, including Leaf, had already departed into the woods. They had no desire to remain among humans.

As they rode across the vast northern lands, Jon imagined what would follow in their wake—the slow, inevitable march of death.

There was nothing he could do to stop it.

All he could do now was warn the people ahead, urging them to flee before the dead arrived.

He and Stannis had agreed to regroup at Last Hearth. From there, their next stand would likely be at Winterfell.

If the Night King chose to come.

Winterfell lay at the heart of the North—but the dead could simply bypass it and continue south.

Still, the plan had come from Bran.

Ever since the Night King had fixed his gaze upon him, Bran was certain—he was the target.

As a greenseer, he knew too much. He could watch, track, and understand the enemy in ways no one else could.

To the Night King, Bran was a threat that had to be eliminated.

Even so, after witnessing the fall of the Wall, none of them truly believed they could stop him.

If the Wall—two hundred meters high and bound in ancient magic—could not hold…

What chance did Winterfell have?

The only hope left was Daenerys Targaryen—and her dragons.

Without them, and without vast armies, nothing could halt the Night King's march south.

As for Ramsay Bolton, who currently held Winterfell—

Jon believed that, faced with the army of the dead, even Ramsay would have no choice but to open the gates.

Eight hours later, Jon reached Last Hearth ahead of Stannis.

The northern stronghold belonged to House Umber, one of House Stark's bannermen, and stood as the northernmost castle in Westeros outside the Night's Watch.

With the Lord Umber and most of his men still marching south with Robb, the castle was under the command of Castellan Hother.

Upon learning Jon's identity, Hother immediately ordered the gates opened.

Jon wasted no time.

"The dead are coming south," he said bluntly. "You need to evacuate—now."

He also ordered messengers sent to nearby wildling settlements, urging them to abandon their homes and flee with them.

The war for the living had begun—and they were already losing ground.
