At once, every gaze shifted toward Wu Qingyi. Though the answer was already clear, they still wanted to hear it, from her own lips. Wu Qingyi met her husband's eyes, her smile soft and unguarded. "The cars Secretary Hao brought to pick me up weren't very suitable for your wheelchair," she said gently. "So… I bought this one." She walked to the side of the vehicle and pressed a button. With a smooth mechanical hum, the sliding door opened automatically. Inside, the seat reclined backward at a measured angle. Another quiet click followed, and a concealed ramp extended seamlessly from the doorway to the ground, forming a gentle slope - wide, steady, and safe. One look was enough to tell: this car had been customized down to the smallest detail.
Wu Qingyi turned back to him, her voice calm yet sincere. "I know you need love and care," she said softly. "But I also know you've been independent your entire life. You don't like relying on others, not even for small things." Her fingers brushed the edge of the ramp. "So, this car is built in a way that allows you to get in and out on your own… without anyone's help." She paused, then sighed lightly, a hint of regret passing through her eyes. "I was actually planning to buy a remote-driving car," she admitted. "A driverless one, so you could control it yourself with a remote. But the customization would take time, and we couldn't wait." Then she looked at him again, almost apologetically. "So, for now… this will have to do. I'm sorry I couldn't get the best one for you yet."
Once again, silence settled over the group, thick and heavy. Every pair of eyes carried the same unspoken thought - You bought him a Mercedes-Benz V-Class… and still called it not the best? Warmth slowly seeped into Wang Lingxuan's chest, spreading in a way he had long forgotten. He stared at Wu Qingyi, disbelief flickering in his eyes. This gentle, seemingly innocent girl had thought of his needs even before they had truly met. No… she had thought of him before she even left the mountain. She had planned the customization in advance, arranged the modifications early, ensuring the car would be delivered on the very day they were to register their marriage, as if this moment had already been written into her future.
His fingers tightened imperceptibly. How could someone be this sincere? In that instant, Wang Lingxuan made a silent vow. He would give her everything he had - his strength, his future, his entire life… He would make sure she never regretted choosing him. Lowering his gaze, he discreetly sent a message to his father: "Mom is with me. Don't worry about her. She's coming with me to register my marriage with Qingyi. I'm also planning to return to the Wang family business."
At the old Wang residence, anger hung heavy in the air. The moment Fang Liyun's escape was discovered, Old Master Wang's face darkened like a gathering storm. His cane struck the floor with a sharp thud as he glared at his son. "How could you let her leave so easily?" he thundered. "And you didn't even think to inform us? If your mother hadn't gone to look for her, we might still be kept in the dark!" Wang Shenghao rubbed his temples helplessly. "I thought she was only sulking in her room because of the bride exchange," he replied. "I didn't want to provoke her further." Old Madam Wang let out a cold scoff. "You indulge her every single time. If you'd been even a little stricter, she wouldn't dare be this stubborn and interfere with Lingxuan's marriage." She narrowed her eyes. "If my grandson fails to get married today, don't even think about living peacefully with your wife."
Wang Shenghao knew his mother was merely venting her anger, she wouldn't truly destroy his married life over this. With a faint, teasing smile, he said, "What can I do? I'm only following Father's example when it comes to doting on my wife." The old man's brows shot up, his mouth already opening to unleash another round of scolding… When suddenly, a ringtone cut sharply through the room. Wang Shenghao froze as this was the special ringtone he had specifically kept it for his family member's numbers whenever they messaged him. So, he quickly pulled out his phone to check what message he had received and to see whether it was from his son or his wife as rest of the family member were currently present at the old Wang House apart from the grandchildren of Wang family and he was sure that those brats wouldn't contact him unless they have been in some serious mess. However, he had a guess that it might be his son as just few minutes ago he had informed him about his mother's escape.
The moment he saw the sender's name, his fingers tightened as he his guess was right, and then he opened the message without hesitation. As he read the message, the colour drained from his face. The room fell silent as everyone sensed it… Something was wrong, very wrong… Wang Shenghao said nothing, his eyes locked on the screen as though the words had struck him dumb. Unable to bear the suspense, his second brother, Wang Zeyuan, finally asked, "What happened?"
Wang Shenghao finally snapped out of his daze. He lifted his head and said slowly, "Liyun… she's on her way to the Civil Affairs Bureau with Lingxuan. They're going to get his marriage certificate." For a heartbeat, the room was utterly silent. Then Old Master Wang and Old Madam Wang spoke at the same time, their voices filled with disbelief and joy.
"Really? Lingxuan is getting married?" Old Master Wang's eyes gleamed and he let out a deep, satisfied laugh. "Didn't I say it? Once that boy makes a decision, no one can change it."
Wang Shenghao didn't elaborate. He only nodded, a quiet confirmation that carried more weight than words. Yet Wang Zeyuan frowned as something didn't sit right. "Then why do you look so shocked?" he asked again. "It's as if you didn't even know Lingxuan was getting married today. Is there something else?" Once more, all eyes turned to Wang Shenghao. The atmosphere tightened, anticipation pressing down on the room. After a long pause, Wang Shenghao finally spoke, his voice lowered, almost cautious as though the words themselves carried power. "Lingxuan said… he wants to return to the Wang family business."
Silence engulfed the room. No one had expected it. Lingxuan, who had once abandoned everything, perhaps even his will to live and was now willing to return to the Wang family business. What had happened in that short span of time? What could have made him change his mind so completely? Then a single thought surfaced in everyone's mind: His bride… But before anyone could speak further or confirm their thoughts, a sharp voice cut through the stillness.
Qin Yuxuan, the old master's second daughter-in-law, sneered coldly. "How admirable," she said. "My son is still lying on bed, unconscious. No one knows when... if… he will ever wake up and now Lingxuan is talking about returning to the family business instead of finding the best doctors to save my son." Her gaze hardened, resentment spilling over. "If it weren't for Lingxuan's carelessness, my son wouldn't have met with that accident in the first place." She paused, then laughed bitterly. "Fang Liyun is truly lucky. Her son survived, found a bride, and now he's about to enjoy wealth and power again… while my son remains trapped between life and death."
No one responded. The accident from a few months ago hung heavily in the air, reopening wounds that had never healed. That tragedy had injured not just Wang Lingxuan, but also the second young master, Wang Chenrui. Both had survived, yet fate had been cruelled in its own twisted way.
One woke up… only to lose the ability to walk whereas the other who has the ability to walk… never woke up at all…
After the accident, doctors had managed to keep Wang Chenrui alive, but he had fallen into a deep coma… and had not opened his eyes since. The room fell into a suffocating silence, burdened by grief, guilt, and unspoken blame.
Since that day, Qin Yuxuan had stood firmly against Wang Shenghao, Fang Liyun, and their son. In her heart, the truth was cruel and unmistakable - the killer's real target had been Wang Lingxuan. Wang Chenrui had only learned of it by chance and rushed out without hesitation, throwing himself into danger to save his cousin. If Wang Chenrui had not intercepted the assassin's car, if he had not placed himself between death and Wang Lingxuan… then Chenrui would be healthy now, living an ordinary, peaceful life and Wang Lingxuan… would have been the one lying on a bed or worse, buried beneath cold earth.
