As the Adaptive Combat Cores fanned out, the erratic shadows continued to blink in and out of existence. Axion rapidly cross-referenced the precise patterns of their materialization to plot their trajectory.
There was an 80% mathematical probability that these entities were actively attempting to guide his units toward specific coordinates.
Whenever a cluster of combat cores attempted to diverge from a sector, these anomalous silhouettes would instantly manifest along the structural surface of the nearest bulkheads.
Axion observed their desperate physical gesticulations; they were clearly striving to arrest the attention of his vanguard.
Yet, the spectral, high-pitched shrieking that accompanied their movements carried no binary syntax or data structure that a cybernetic mind could decode.
The soulless machinery of the cores remained entirely unaffected by the auditory phenomenon.
Nevertheless, the crude, frantic geometry of their movements made it visually obvious that the entities were gripped by immense panic.
The shadows appeared to possess a baseline understanding of cybernetic behavioral logic; rather than attempting to herd the entire mechanized vanguard, they focused on a select pair of Adaptive Combat Cores, repeatedly materializing directly across their primary line of advance.
Realizing that the unliving machines were utterly deaf to their empyric wailing, the entities quickly pivoted to a different method of communication.
Thick rime and frost began rapidly crystallizing across the hyper-alloyed facade of a towering laboratory complex, freezing into distinct, structural typography.
Are you a Federation relief force?! Help us!
Directly beneath the frosted lettering, a row of interconnected shadows pressed against the wall, their arms thrust rigidly into the air in a universal sign of distress.
Axion possessed no data to determine the metaphysical nature of these silhouettes, nor could he verify if they possessed auditory receptors.
He could, however, confirm one baseline variable: the entities possessed visual capability.
A high-output holographic display projected from the flank of the nearest core, casting sharp, illuminated typography into the dim atmosphere:
"Identify yourselves. Transmit structural authorization codes. Federation cybernetic forces are mandated to provide all available tactical assistance to certified citizens."
The gathering shadows instantly recognized the text rippling through the hologram.
A dense, chaotic sequence of numerical strings, forced into reality by raw psychic compression, began frantically freezing onto the surface of the bulkheads.
Every individual string of digits represented an immutable record of identity and civic origin.
While Axion's immediate memory banks lacked the specific personnel rosters for this sector, the database of HUE-03 was fully intact. Upon cross-referencing the strings, Axion confirmed their validity: these entities were the missing researchers of the Federation.
The digital strings encoded the birth-world, lineage, and bureaucratic clearance tiers of each citizen.
In truth, the majority of these long-dead souls had likely never known just how much classified administrative data was woven into their personal identification codes.
As a growing multitude of shadows converged on the sector, the ambient currents of the Immaterium began to churn, breaking the dead stagnation that had hung over the city.
"I taste the sweet, delicious pulse of agony and torment!"
Out of the empty air, a grotesque warp-entity coalesced into physical reality, its elongated, multi-forked tongue lashing the air. Sensing the dense concentration of shadows rippling through the architecture, its fluid features split into a look of absolute, predatory ecstasy.
"Ah, magnificent, un-reaped souls! A feast!"
The daemon completely ignored the humming, active frames of the Adaptive Combat Cores, its singular, malevolent gaze locked entirely on the shadows shifting across the walls and deck plates.
Splat!
Before the warp-spawn could take a single step forward, a shimmering, high-frequency blade cleaved through the air, shearing its head entirely from its shoulders.
An instant later, a concentrated burst of plasma incinerated the tumbling remains.
Aieee!
The reaction time of the Adaptive Combat Core was instantaneous, its weapon mounts cycling between particle vibration blades and plasma incinerators within a microsecond.
The daemon, having barely expended the warp-energy required to anchor itself to reality, was violently dissolved back into a discorporate psychic state.
The banished entity's malevolent consciousness had no desire to engage the unyielding machines that had broken its vessel; instead, it attempted to dive directly into the alloyed bulkheads to pursue the black silhouettes.
Yet, while conventional structural metals posed no barrier to a discorporate spirit, the architecture of this city was different, forged from alloys deeply saturated by the raw physics of the Warp.
No matter how frantically the daemon clawed, it could not pass the threshold of the metal.
The shadows, a feast of the most exquisite mortal agony, remained tantalizingly visible, yet entirely unreachable, separated by an immutable, metaphysical barrier.
"Cursed, unliving metal!"
The daemon's piercing, frustrated shriek reverberated through the immediate warp-space.
Yet, it was completely powerless. To exist as a warp-wraith and find oneself physically barred from touching a mortal soul was an intolerable logical contradiction.
Glancing with palpable malice at the Adaptive Combat Core, which maintained a lock on its spiritual coordinates as if it could see its invisible form, the daemon dissolved into the spatial currents, fleeing the sector.
The frost on the wall melted and reformed, spelling out a grim warning:
Follow us. The resonance of our souls draws the filth of this void.
It was evident that this was far from their first encounter with the predatory entities of the Warp.
"Acknowledged. Transitioning to escort parameters. Provide clear navigation markers."
Perhaps prompted by the cold binary response, the shadows seemed to collectively realize that they no longer possessed physical forms.
A small, tightly focused arrow materialized on the surface of the structure.
Compared to the massive psychic spikes generated by the frozen strings of numbers earlier, this localized manipulation of thermal energy carried a negligible empyric signature.
The Adaptive Combat Core tracked the faint, shifting marker, arriving shortly before a monolithic, square-faced structure.
The core's mechanical manipulators violently pried open the heavy alloy blast doors.
Reconfiguring its external chassis dimensions to fit the spatial constraints, the combat core advanced into the primary atrium.
The interior of the building was completely hollow, devoid of structural partitions. Suspended in the absolute center of the hall by a chaotic web of heavy cabling hung the severed, upper torso of a large bipedal machine.
Faint remnants of synthetic flesh and artificial hair clung to the ruined armature, and along the flank of the chassis, a faded emblem depicting a stylized butterfly with outstretched wings was barely visible.
[Scanning. Manufacturing mark identified: Ornshaw Engineering Corporation. Semi-biological synthetic automaton. Unauthorized non-standard chassis.]
The illumination grid within the atrium suddenly flared to life. The cascading host of shadows surged down the walls, tracing the path of the heavy cabling before pouring into the shattered mechanical torso.
The alloy skeleton, partially exposed beneath torn flaps of synthetic flesh, had been warped into a twisted, irregular geometry by millennia of subtle warp seepage.
Bzzzt… hiss…
[External… audio… testing.]
Accompanied by a sharp burst of static, a distorted, overlapping voice rasped from the ruined vocal synthesizers of the chassis. It was a harrowing, composite sound, weaving together the distinct vocal inflections of dozens of separate individuals, both male and female.
[Audio signal confirmed. Initiating remote digital interface.]
Detecting that the ruined mechanism had somehow achieved a state of operational reactivity, the Adaptive Combat Core immediately attempted to force a remote data-link into the machine's processing arrays.
"Stop… we cannot parse your quantum syntax. We must use acoustic speech."
[Reverting to acoustic communication mode.]
Within this bizarre, echoing chamber, it took Axion several hours of meticulous vocal exchange to piece together the history of the facility.
Every shadow that haunted these ruins was the trapped soul of a Federation researcher, locked within the geometric loop of the compressed space.
As for those who had died outside the boundary of the spatial fold, their souls had long since been dissolved and scattered into the tides of the Warp.
From the exact microsecond they departed the safety of HUE-03 to set foot on the city's surface, absolute catastrophe had been their only companion.
The governing Iron Men had systematically annihilated every combat proxy the researchers brought to the surface, before ruthlessly hunting down the scientists themselves across every tier of the research center.
It had been a slaughter of unimaginable terror. Death had stalked them through the corridors. The power-weapons of the defensive automata tore through the armored plating of the researchers' mechanized frames, and high-output ion incinerators bathed the hulls in searing, chemical fire, burning the scientists alive inside the very cockpits they occupied.
The sheer, agonizing horror of being consumed by those atomic flames had left their souls screaming into the void.
