Chapter 436 - Overwhelming Attrition

"WAAAAAGH!"

The greenskins erupted into fanatical jubilation as they witnessed Zog Steeltoof instantaneously tear the Armored Warden apart.

His massive frame looming over the debris, Steeltoof carelessly kicked aside a blast-screen that had been melted into structural uselessness by superheated plasma. He took a massive stride forward and broke into a thunderous run.

The surviving Armored Wardens shifted their target priority vectors immediately, coordinating a concentrated fusillade to bring down the Ork Warlord.

Yet, a shimmering aura of virulent green energy manifested around the colossus.

From the rear lines, the bizarre Weirdboyz thrust their crude metal staves, barely coherent enough to be classified as psychic foci, into the air, channeling the gestalt field of the greenskins to weave a dense, pulsating psychic barrier across Steeltoof's colossal bulk.

Shielded by the raw essence of the Waaagh!, Steeltoof transformed into an unstoppable engine of absolute devastation.

Lowering his armored shoulders like a super-heavy siege ram, he plowed headlong into the mechanical ranks, completely pulverizing six or seven of the automatons upon initial impact.

His massive power klaw snapped and twisted, effortlessly crushing the dense alloy carapaces.

The Armored Wardens, who had previously dominated the greenskin guards through raw, mechanical force, now found themselves utterly outmatched in a contest of brute leverage.

Shards of rent metal erupted from every collision.

The deafening shriek of tearing iron and fracturing chassis echoed continuously down the corridor.

Realizing that conventional engagement parameters were yielding a sub-optimal attrition ratio, the final remaining Armored Wardens halted their offensive routines. Moving with synchronized velocity, they lunged forward, throwing their entire physical weight directly onto the Warlord's chassis.

Their internal Quantum Energy Cores triggered an immediate, deliberate overload sequence, calculated to obliterate the target via close-range detonation.

However, before the reaction could hit critical mass, a blinding flash of emerald light illuminated the corridor.

Steeltoof's gargantuan silhouette vanished entirely from the blast radius.

BOOM!

The catastrophic detonation ruptured the structural integrity of the surrounding decks, tearing completely through the floor and ceiling bulkheads and bending a massive section of the vessel's exposed adamantium keel.

The surrounding Orks stared in stunned awe at the expanding plume of radioactive fire and pulverized debris.

"Heh, heh, heh! Good fing old Steeltoof was ready for dat one!"

Steeltoof's raspy, cunning laughter echoed from far behind the Imperial defensive line.

"Da Boss is da craftiest git alive! Dat's why he's da biggest and da most WAAAAAGH!"

Only then did the Boyz realize that their Warlord had been repositioned to safety.

As a highly advanced specimen of Ork intellect, Steeltoof never relied on a single tactical vector; whether it was the manifestation of a Waaagh! shield or a precisely timed psychic teleportation, he had coordinated his auxiliary assets well in advance.

He had learned to anticipate such fatalistic stratagems during his campaigns against the Tyranids.

Those acid-spitting bio-monstrosities were fond of the exact same maneuver, ceasing all offensive actions to throw their bodies onto a target right before detonating their bio-stores.

Yet, the mechanical sacrifice had not been entirely without merit.

As the dense cordite smoke dissipated, the bent adamantium keel inside the gap began to snap back into its original geometric alignment. The shattered deck-plates and breached compartments were rebuilding themselves at a visible rate, their structural voids being filled rapidly.

A dense, shifting mass of liquid silver alloy coalesced into a unified, spherical entity, floating slowly out from the wreckage.

The nanite sub-assemblies of the Adaptive Combat Core easily repaired the micro-structural deficiencies caused by the suicidal blast, consuming and assimilating the shattered chassis left behind by the fallen Wardens to replenish its own mass.

SNAP!

Two jagged metallic spires erupted from the surface of the silver sphere, and a blinding cascade of violent, high-frequency arc-lightning began to dance between them.

The localized electromagnetic field shifted instantly, causing the air to crackle and ionize with deafening pops.

Every greenskin remaining in the corridor felt the hair on their thick, green hides stand straight up.

CRACK!

A brilliant network of blue lightning arced from the spires, discharging with absolute precision into the packed ranks of the approaching Orks.

"AAAGHH!"

As the blinding electrical discharge tore through the corridor, the localized illumination arrays of the ship failed completely, plunging the compartment into near-total darkness.

Simultaneously, a rancid, suffocating stench of scorched protein and burning flesh flooded the air.

The lethality of utilizing a raw physical potential difference against living biology was absolute.

This cybernetic counter-offensive completely bypassed external plate armor, routing the energy directly into the targets' neural and muscular systems.

In an instant, dozens of large Orks were thoroughly charred to a medium-well state.

The ancient weapons of this long-forgotten human epoch abided by the most unyielding laws of fundamental physics.

While the Orks' incredible alien physiology and stubborn vitality prevented them from dying outright despite being partially cooked, the severe neural paralysis induced by the massive current rendered their limbs entirely unresponsive.

Roaring through the green psychic barrier that had insulated him from the discharge, Steeltoof lunged forward once more.

His power klaw swung down in a brutal, sweeping arc, aiming a shattering kinetic blow directly at the floating Adaptive Combat Core.

Yet, faced with a physical impact that carried more kinetic force than a battle-cannon shell, the nanite matrix chose to yield rather than resist.

The massive power klaw plunged effortlessly into the liquid sphere, passing completely through its form as if striking a column of water, an empty, frustrating dissipation of momentum.

But as Steeltoof's weapon overextended, a secondary rotary mechanism manifested on the flank of the Adaptive Combat Core. A blade shimmering with a pale-gold, molecular-vibration edge slid from the mass, executing a lightning-fast scissoring strike aimed directly at the Warlord's neck.

Sensing an immediate threat of decapitation, Steeltoof twisted his massive frame violently to the side.

The pale-gold blade missed his throat but cleaved directly across the power klaw mounted on his left arm, severing a massive chunk of the heavy mechanism with terrifying ease.

CLANG!

Realizing that conventional melee strikes were entirely ineffective against this fluid anomaly, Steeltoof used his remaining leverage to slam the damaged power klaw like a club directly into the center of the Adaptive Combat Core.

Simultaneously, his other hand pulled a massive, custom-built Squig Pistol from his hip.

This highly exotic firearm was one of Steeltoof's signature weapons, engineered to chamber live, hyper-aggressive squigs trained to burrow and tear through anything they impacted.

The conceptual design mirrored the flesh-borer beetles utilized by Hive Fleet bio-weapons, with one critical distinction: Tyranid organisms harvested only organic biomass.

A weapon-bred squig would consume absolutely anything.

Even standard-issue ceramite power armor could be chewed through if given enough time.

The predatory squig was launched from the wide barrel, slamming directly into the surface of the Adaptive Combat Core and instantly sinking its teeth inward to begin devouring the machine.

However, the nanite matrices within the core immediately invaded the creature's epidermis, dismantling the micro-squig down to its base molecular components within milliseconds.

A smear of dark, xenos blood bloomed briefly across the silver sphere before being cleanly reabsorbed into the metallic mass.

The squig's dentin and jaw structure contained an abnormally high concentration of dense mineral compounds, providing the core with a minuscule but high-quality supply of bio-synthetic metals.

In addition to the creature, the massive chunk of the power klaw that Steeltoof had shattered against the core was likewise being broken down and pulled into the silver mass.

Staring at the bizarre, unyielding nature of the Adaptive Combat Core, Steeltoof's eyes shifted, locking onto a heavy flamer assembly abandoned on the deck-plates.

Reaching down with his unencumbered hand, he ripped the massive promethium fuel tank from the rear of the weapon and hurled it like a missile straight into the center of the silver sphere.

Before the core could fully process the object, Steeltoof snatched up a heavy melta-gun from the floor and pulled the trigger.

BOOM!

Having already dissolved the outer casing of the fuel cylinder, the resulting promethium leakage ignited instantly under the melta beam, transforming the Adaptive Combat Core into a roaring, miniature sun of chemical fire.

The extreme, concentrated thermal energy began to systematically disrupt the delicate electromagnetic bonds maintaining the nanite matrix.

Enveloped in the raging inferno, the Adaptive Combat Core surged forward with sudden, explosive acceleration, splashing its mass directly onto Steeltoof's armored torso.

Extreme temperatures caused immediate demagnetization within the nanites; the localized magnetic links that bound the individual machines together began to fail, causing the core's cohesion to degrade rapidly.

Even with temporal solidifying protocols active, the Regression-class loop could not cause absorbed thermal energy to simply vanish into nothingness.

The physical reality of the heat entirely negated the chronological reversal.

Yet, even as its structural cohesion collapsed, the Adaptive Combat Core maintained its lethal directives.

Before its mechanical framework dissolved entirely into a useless puddle, the semi-molten core managed to coat a vast portion of its liquid-metal mass across Steeltoof's torso and limbs.

While the previous arc-lightning strike had been absorbed by the Warlord's psychic Waaagh! shield, the raw, clinging horror of a multi-thousand-degree metallic slurry was something a psychic barrier was entirely powerless to avert.
