Chapter 439 - The Vengeance of Slaanesh

Segmentum Solar.

Holy Terra.

The Grand Administratum.

Roboute Guilliman had only just received the dispatches from Axion.

The Ork offensive across the Eastern Fringe had been utterly shattered. The greenskins had saved but a single planetoid-fortress, fleeing to parts unknown, while the rest of their massive migration-host had been completely eradicated. The Ork Warboss, Zog Steeltoof, had been slain near the Maelstrom by the automata, who had successfully reclaimed a captured Imperial battleship along with a handful of surviving citizens. Furthermore, the notorious heretic Astartes, Lucius the Eternal, had been put to the sword by the selfsame iron legion. To this point, no signs of his foul resurrection had manifested; the precise metaphysics of his true demise remained obscured.

As he witnessed a catastrophe of such cataclysmic proportions suppressed in its infancy, the Lord Regent exhaled a long, heavy breath, as though a monumental burden had been lifted from his post-human shoulders.

Yet, he was granted no respite. A high-ranking palace guard suddenly rushed into the Primarch's presence, his strides urgent.

"My Lord Regent, the latest cipher."

Though the guard remained ignorant of the intelligence he carried, the grim, severe countenance of the Ordo's High Inquisitor had made it painfully clear that these tidings boded nothing but ill for the Imperium.

Guilliman looked upon the mortal soldier. His gaze held a deep, anchoring authority, the kind of stabilizing will that left the guard with the unshakable certainty that so long as a son of the Emperor breathed, the Imperium would endure, and all would be brought to order.

The guard offered a crisp salute and departed. Alone in the vaulted chamber, Guilliman cast his eyes over the newly decrypted slate.

Crack!

"What in the name of the Throne are these parasites thinking?!" the Avenging Son roared, his voice shaking the baroque pillars. "Lion El'Jonson should have dragged every last one of them to the block!"

A fury born of deep, cold exhaustion erupted within Guilliman, his monolithic fist crushing the dataslate into a shower of crystalline shards.

The intelligence was a covert summary from the Inquisition's most classified networks. Within the borders of Segmentum Solar alone, over one hundred worlds had suddenly been subjected to coordinated, catastrophic incursions by the daemonic legions of Slaanesh. Cruelly, the vast majority of these planets were Garden Worlds or Paradise Worlds, sectors naturally devoid of garrisoned regiments or robust orbital defense structures. Historically, such domains were rarely targeted by the manifestations of the Warp.

Yet this tide had broken every established paradigm of heretical warfare.

Guilliman's tactical acumen immediately discerned the wider stratagem: this was no random, localized terror, but a meticulously orchestrated campaign of vengeance engineered by the Dark Prince, specifically designed to exploit the systemic avarice and moral rot of the Imperial bureaucracy. The high-ranking dignitaries and Planetary Governors who had gathered upon these idyllic paradises to indulge in secular luxury had been targeted like cattle by Slaaneshi cults, systematically butchered to fuel a sector-wide grand ritual.

On those picturesque Garden Worlds, where peaceful landscapes had stood undisturbed for millennia, the silence was shattered by the discordant screeches of the Warp and the debased laughter of the Hedonite cultists. The heretics had infiltrated the estates disguised as domestic serfs, quietly tracing defiled geometries and runic patterns beneath the very feet of the highborn guests.

When the festivities reached their zenith, when the air was thick with the haze of vintage narcotics and classical music, the traps were sprung. Obsidian runes flared with baleful light, locking the terrified aristocrats and governors in inescapable stasis-grids. Amidst an orchestra of desperate screams, their vital essences were violently siphoned from their flesh, channeled as pure psychic fuel for the She Who Thirsts.

From the tearing rifts of the Immaterium, Neverborn horrors swarmed into the material universe, carving a path of wanton mutilation across the verdant meadows, turning gardens of peace into abattoirs of meat and madness.

Upon the teeming urban sprawls of the Paradise Worlds, the devastation was even more absolute. Slaaneshi cells detonated simultaneous strikes across every sector, turning towering plexuses of entertainment into multi-level slaughterhouses. Millions of citizens perished in the opening hours of the panic, their lifeblood pooling into the neon-lit avenues. Daemons of the Dark Prince glutted themselves on the concentrated spikes of human terror, agony, and forbidden desire, their metaphysical presence stabilizing and expanding within the feedback loop of psychic horror.

As the Warp tears widened, the macro-slaughter intensified. Guilliman could scarce bear to calculate the grand total: if over three hundred worlds had succumbed within the core precincts of Segmentum Solar alone, how many unnumbered sectors across the wider Imperium were currently burning in the fires of damnation?

There was no time to wait for localized astropathic dispatches to trickle back to Terra. Stepping to his grand console, Guilliman issued a prompt, absolute mandate: all available Imperial forces were to immediately redirect to the nearest Garden or Paradise World within their operational spheres, execute scorched-earth purges, and report the status of the local sectors without delay.

Even as the Primarch labored to mobilize the segmentum's response, across the vast expanses of the Imperium, a chorus of astropathic distress cries had already saturated the screaming voids of the Warp.

Deep within the Segmentum Tempestus, upon the distant Paradise World of Elysium, a conflict of unmitigated savagery was unfolding. Elysium had long stood as a crown jewel of recreation within the Segmentum, its cloud-piercing spires bathed in shifting neon hues, its low orbits constantly choked with aristocratic star-liners.

Now, the shadow of the Warp choked the stars. The suffocating, musk-scented miasma of Chaos hung thick over the shattered ruins. Crystalline sky-scrapers had collapsed into jagged sierras of rubble, while the burning husks of civilian transports littered the boulevards. Severed limbs and broken bodies lay strewn across the plazas, the atmosphere heavy with the metallic tang of fresh blood and the sickeningly sweet smell of burning flesh.

Through the smoke-choked skies, two Stormhawk Interceptors of the Black Templars Chapter swept low, setting down within the cratered remains of the civic forum. The assault ramps hissed downward, and an aura of absolute, uncompromising wrath spilled from the cockpits.

Two tactical squads of Black Templars stepped forth onto the defiled soil, their boltgun casings polished to a dull sheen, their visors burning with a cold, unyielding hatred for the heretic.

At the vanguard of the formation stood Veteran Sergeant Victor. His ancient power armor was heavily encrusted with purity seals, litanies of hatred, and honor markings earned across a century of crusading. He swept his unblinking gaze across the shattered plaza.

"For the glory of the God-Emperor, purge this heretical filth!" Victor bellowed, his voice a low, gravelly rumble through his vox-grille, carrying the absolute weight of monastic authority.

"Accept no shame, interdict the unclean!" his battle-brothers roared in unison, their voices echoing off the burning ruins like a funeral knell for the heretics.

Surveying the decadent architecture of this once-gilded paradise, Victor let out a contemptuous snort through his helmet's filters. "These so-called paradises... they drowned themselves in secular luxury and fleshly indulgence, casting aside their devotion to the Golden Throne. Now, they reap what they sowed. This ruin is the ultimate price of spiritual laxity."

The Space Marines offered curt nods of agreement, their eyes cold with disgust for the fallen mortals who had populated this world.

"Form defensive perimeters. Suffer not the claw of the daemon to go unpunished," Victor commanded.

No sooner had the order left his lips than a horde of Slaaneshi Neverborn erupted from the surrounding amphitheaters. The creatures moved with a sickening, liquid grace; some possessed multiple asymmetrical limbs ending in chitinous pincers, their torsos entwined with barbed, lashing pseudopods that cut through the air with a whistling hiss. Others slithered upon serpentine lower bodies, leaving trails of neuro-toxic slime across the marble floors. They unleashed high-pitched, mind-shredding shrieks as they threw themselves toward the Space Marines.

"Bring to bear the bolters! Fire!"

At Victor's command, the squad opened a disciplined wall of fire. The deafening, rhythmic thud of bolt ammunition filled the plaza, mass-reactive shells detonating inside the daemonic forms, tearing them into clouds of vaporized purple ichor.

Yet the scale of the incursion was immense. Wave after wave of daemons surged over the mangled remains of their predecessors, completely indifferent to their casualties. They threw themselves against the Space Marine shield-wall, their elegant blades of torment clashing violently against the power swords of the Black Templars.

As the melee devolved into an attritional grind, a sudden flash of violent violet lightning split the heavens. Out of the smoke stepped a warband of the traitorous Emperor's Children.

They wore ornate, baroque power armor warped by millennia of exposure to the Eye of Terror, their sonic weapons and power blades thrumming with lethal, dissonant energy. At their head stood a corrupted champion of the Legion, his faceplate adorned with the blasphemous sigils of Slaanesh.

"Dogs of the Corpse-Emperor! Today your pathetic crusade ends in ecstasy!" the traitor laughed, his voice amplified by a sonic vox-modulator as he led his Noise Marines into the fray.

Victor's eyes narrowed behind his red lenses. "Traitorous scum of the Third! Today you answer for ten millennia of sin!"

The Chaos Space Marine let out a piercing, mocking laugh. "Answer for sin? You are but ghosts clinging to a rotting corpse. The power of the Warp is the only true eternity!"

With the intervention of the heretic Astartes, the battle grew exponentially more lethal. Among these traitors were veterans who had survived since the days of the Great Heresy, their combat experience and martial sadism far exceeding the operational lifespans of the loyalist crusaders.

In the midst of the swirling chaos, a towering Keeper of Secrets, its form shrouded in a haze of psycho-reactive pink mist, lashed out with a massive, barbed whip of torment toward Hadrian. The whip, woven from raw warp-energy and daemon-sinew, dripped with a highly concentrated, psycho-caustic fluid.

Hadrian, who was currently locked in a blade-duel with an Emperor's Children legionary, was forced to execute a desperate pivot. He planted a heavy, armored boot into the traitor's chest to drive him back, then raised his power sword to intercept the lashing cord.

The whip struck the active disruption field of the power blade, but instead of severing, the immense kinetic force of the blow nearly tore the weapon from Hadrian's grip. Splashes of the purple daemon-fluid struck his black ceramite plates, instantly hissing as they ate deep pits into his armor.

Before Hadrian could recover his stance, the chainsword of Chaos Marine drove straight toward his exposed flank. Hadrian lunged aside, but the blow caught him squarely across the chest, shattering his primary breastplate and sending him crashing into the plinth of a fallen statue.

"Hadrian!" Lucas roared through the vox, attempting to hack a path through the daemonic press to aid his fallen kin, but a wall of snapping claws and traitor blades cut him off.

"Yield to the inevitable, loyalist," a Chaos Marine mocked, parrying Lucas's strikes with lazy precision. "Your fragile faith means nothing in the face of the Pantheon. Cast down your blades, and we shall grant you sensations your unawakened flesh could never fathom."

Lucas spat an oath into his helm, his muscles straining against his armor's servos. "Silence, heretic! We live and die for the Emperor alone! His fire shall consume your twisted soul!"

With a roar of righteous fury, he brought his chainsword down in a brutal arc, chewing through the traitor's shoulder guards and driving the heretic back.

Sergeant Victor fought with a cold, calculated precision, attempting to reform his line and conduct a fighting withdrawal toward a more defensible redoubt. But the enemy's numbers were overwhelming; they were entirely pinned. One by one, his battle-brothers were brought down, their blood staining the shattered marble of the paradise world.

Yet, even as his internal monitors flashed with critical warnings, Victor remained a master of the tactical theater. While directing his remaining men against the overlapping assaults, his eyes scanned the geometry of the ruins, seeking the anchor point of the localized warp rift.

Finally, beneath the skeletal foundations of a collapsed sub-spire, he spotted it: a massive, pulsing ritual circle constructed from the calcified bones of the planet's nobility, glowing with an unholy, violet luminescence.

"To me, brothers! The nexus of the rift lies ahead! If we break its core, we sever their anchor to this world! For the Emperor and the Chapter—charge!"

With a thunderous cry, Victor led his final three battle-brothers in a desperate shock assault toward the altar.

The Slaaneshi cultists and Chaos Marines guarding the ritual site threw themselves forward with manic frenzy. Victor's power fist swung in a relentless, skull-crushing arc, pulverizing heretics with every strike, but for every foe he laid low, three more rushed to fill the void.

The loyalists' bolt-magazines ran dry. Their melee blades chipped and failed against the unnatural density of daemon-hide. Yet, not a single son of Sigismund faltered. Even as their weapons broke, they used their armored fists, their shoulders, and the dead weight of their failing armor to batter a path forward, determined to seal their oaths of loyalty with their final breaths.

Surrounded by a sea of claws, mocking laughter, and shifting neon shadows, the last of the Black Templars were driven to their knees, fighting to the absolute end.
