Chapter 441 - The Heavy Hammer of the Federation

Ssssszt!

A beam of dark radiance swept past the absolute periphery of Victor and Lucas. The daemons caught in its direct refulgence instantly dissolved into scattering ash and drifting smoke, howling in absolute agony.

High above in the choking skies, vast swarms of silver, bizarrely configured aircraft were diving toward the surface.

Victor had never before laid eyes upon atmospheric craft of this design, yet their distinct, unyielding geometry proclaimed their identity without ambiguity. Their gleaming, polished hulls and streamlined fuselages were matched with weapon systems completely absent from any Imperial archives.

"Sir, I have never witnessed such patterns of aircraft. Are they some newly discovered xenos breed?"

Hearing Lucas's strained query, Victor shook his head slowly.

"Those should be the Men of Iron. Within the bounds of the Imperium, only those enigmatic masses of cold iron would possess such configurations."

"But the architecture of those craft does not entirely match the data packets transmitted by the Chapter earlier."

Victor offered a noncommittal shrug.

It was true. The standard intelligence profiles indicated that the Iron Men's Heavy Combat Drones resembled drifting, metallic discs and utilized plasma-based weaponry. In stark contrast, the machines currently dominating the skies were shaped like delicate, flattened triangles, and the armaments they bore deviated entirely from historical records.

Even though the discharge had merely grazed his position, Victor had still perceived a profound, unnatural sensation emanating from that beam of light. It was an expression of absolute, unadulterated annihilation that caused an involuntary shiver to ripple through his transhuman soul.

"I believe my assessment stands. Were they xenos, they would not have adjusted their firing vectors to avoid us during that last strafe."

Watching the daemons of Slaanesh systematically dissolving into nothingness beneath the relentless barrages of dark light, Victor felt his combat-strained nerves ease slightly. The entity that materialized next within the war zone allowed their vigilance to drop entirely.

Thssshhh!

The massive heavy carriers of the Iron Men swept across the firmament, leaving blinding plumes of engine backfire in their wake. The colossal silver hulls descended with measured, mechanical precision, touching down not far from the Space Marines' position.

A vast detachment of mechanical frames, bearing a striking familial resemblance to standard automated sentry-troopers, marched out of the primary staging bays in flawless, lockstep unison.

The forelimbs of these automata were integrated with uniquely profiled weapon chassis that differed radically from conventional Imperial ballistics or energy weapons. They bore a passing resemblance to standard heavy flamers, yet their muzzles utilized a distinct, horn-shaped configuration that constricted sharply before flaring outward.

The silver constructs rapidly deployed into fire teams of three to five units, spreading systematically through the immediate perimeter.

As heavy structural debris was violently shifted aside, several surviving daemons of Slaanesh attempted to launch frantic ambushes, lunging directly at the cold iron intruders.

However, the supporting mechanical units in the rear activated their armaments without the slightest hesitation. Disregarding any concepts of friendly fire within their own ranks, they unleashed broad, scattered cascades of thick, dark energy.

The enveloping beams completely swallowed both the vanguard automata and the screeching daemons alike.

The warp-spawn shrieks terminated abruptly as they were rendered down to ash, yet the mechanical units themselves emerged from the dark energy entirely unscathed. They continued to heave structural rubble aside, their sensory suites methodically sweeping the shattered ruins for further targets.

A Paradise World differed fundamentally from the standard planets of the Imperium.

The urban developments here were not constructed like the towering, suffocating mountains of industrial detritus found on a standard Hive World. Instead, they conformed to an ancient paradigm of civil architecture: independent, structurally elegant spires, wide, prosperous boulevards, and countless recreational facilities interwoven into a harmonious grid.

Entering any roadside lounge or musical tavern, one would find high-tier vintages that were exceedingly rare across other Imperial domains. Here, common Amasec and Gorski Vodka were treated as mere dregs; fortunate patrons could regularly sample Tennarian Port, and the most exclusive enclaves offered measures of Theosophist's Philtre or the legendary Wine of Quaddis.

There was no pauper class on a Paradise World. The mortal population residing here was incredibly sparse compared to the tens of billions crammed into hive sectors, numbering only a few tens of millions.

Every citizen was dedicated exclusively to servicing the needs of visiting Imperial high nobility, and their average income easily matched that of minor lesser nobility in the mid-hives of standard worlds. Yet, such affluence was a matter of survival, for the cost of living on an Paradise World was so exorbitant that an average mid-hive aristocrat could scarcely manage a meager existence here.

Now, however, all of it had been reduced to a pulverized wasteland of shattered stone.

A Thunderhawk gunship soon cut through the complex maze of falling urban debris, touching down smoothly near the landing site of the Iron Men's carrier.

A squad of Black Templars stepped down from the assault ramp, accompanied by two Apothecaries.

Across the planetary surface, there was no sound save for the howling winds tearing through the urban canyons and the rhythmic, metallic clatter of the automata hunting for lingering daemons.

Victor offered a curt nod to his newly arrived brothers, then supported the wounded Lucas, guiding him toward the waiting transport. Once the newly arrived Battle-Brothers and Apothecaries completed the extraction of the fallen's gene-seed and mortal remains, they would lift off and return to the strike cruiser maintaining vigil in high orbit.

Perhaps they would secure a few brief hours of ritual rest. Then, it would be the next world.

With that grim fatalism in mind, Victor secured Lucas into a high-backed harness within the Thunderhawk's bay, then turned and strode back out into the ash-choked air, stopping beside a fractured segment of a structural wall.

The daemon's physical manifestation had already evaporated into the ether. Only a blood-stained, broken power sword remained, driven deep into the masonry.

He extended an armored gauntlet, attempting to wrench the shattered blade free from the wall.

Yet the moment his fingers closed around it, the power sword, which had previously appeared merely snapped in two, was suddenly mapped by a network of structural micro-fractures. It disintegrated into a heap of metallic shards.

Victor paused, staring at the debris, then meticulously gathered every single remnant, even extracting the smallest sliver embedded deep within the stone. He carefully stored the fragments alongside the intact hilt and the lower half of the blade.

Compared to other Imperial war zones and the Space Marines deployed across them, Victor and his companions possessed exceptional fortune.

Ever since the Heart of the Forge had retrieved ancient Federation data packets from the deep reaches of the Warp, Axion had been tirelessly attempting to weaponize those primordial technologies. Given the volatile nature of warp energy itself and the reality that the Void Sword was perpetually subjected to manifestations of the Immaterium, Axion had begun the widespread deployment of ectoplasmic dissociation weaponry across this Titan-class vessel.

Utilizing identical physical principles, Axion had systematically overhauled the weapon arrays of the automated sentry-troopers aboard the Void Sword. The standard neutron beam emitters were replaced with miniaturized ectoplasmic dissociation cannons, augmented by an auxiliary energy storage cell.

The baseline designs of the heavy unmanned combat drones had undergone a comprehensive structural revision as well. Their thick, heavy chassis were streamlined into a slender profile, allowing for the integration of additional energy containment mechanisms designed specifically to store the destructive energies that the Void Sword siphoned and isolated from warp currents.

Beyond these measures, Axion had engineered an independent suite of firearms to ensure that other existing mechanical platforms could utilize this tier of specialized wargear.

This included the specialized ectoplasmic dissociation munitions utilized by the Peltast units, the ectoplasmic blast cannons compatible with the Armored Wardens, the ectoplasmic erasers assigned to the Destroyer-class heavy automata, and the titanic, ship-scale ectoplasmic dissociation weapon deployed upon their Titans, the Daemon Slayer.

Having completed these numerous design iterations, Axion had initially been searching for an active theater of war to conduct live-fire evaluations.

The retaliatory strikes launched by the forces of Slaanesh had exceeded Axion's initial predictive models. Fortuitously, the Void Sword happened to be operating within the immediate proximity of Elysium, allowing it to intercept and respond to the distress signals directly. The only minor complication had been the spatial distance involved, which had resulted in a marginal delay during warp transit.

Nevertheless, the live combat trial was an unmitigated success.

The operational parameters and terminal efficiency of the ectoplasmic dissociation weapons had been thoroughly validated. While conventional kinetic or energy weapons required the systematic disruption of a daemon's localized energy matrix to force a banishment, the ectoplasmic dissociation weapons achieved total erasure. They dissolved those anomalous energy constructs with absolute ease, enforcing a permanent, irrevocable exile.

The forgotten technologies of the Federation had proven themselves indisputably more reliable than the psychic devices born of the Emperor's design or Axion's own initial, unrefined fabrications.
