Deep within the temporal contortions and eerie, ambient energies of the Webway, nearly ten thousand Space Marines clad in stark white power armor had come to a halt. Though they were utilizing the brief respite to conduct field maintenance and rest, their tactical cohesion remained flawless. There was no slackness in their lines; instead, they maintained a vigilant, interlocking perimeter. Had any foe attempted an ambush, the seemingly static formation would have instantly erupted into a tempest of devastating, coordinated firepower.
At the vanguard of the host stood two heavily bearded figures. One of them towered colossally over the rest of the Astartes.
"Are you certain of our heading, Hurkha?"
"Great Khan, the veil of destiny has parted ever so slightly, granting me a fleeting glimpse. A psychic whisper echoes unceasingly in my mind. It confounds me, and I confess I know not whether to trust it."
"Be at ease, Hurkha. I do not mean to reproach you. We have spent months pursuing those elusive xenos eldar, losing their trail entirely, and the egress has eluded us just as long. Whatever omens you perceive, I trust they will steer us toward a swift resolution."
Before the Primarch Jaghatai Khan and his Stormseer, Hurkha, could conclude their counsel, the already unstable Webway buckled under a violent tremor. The surrounding spatial architecture shimmered with an unnatural, sickly luminescence, and a soul-chilling dread rippled through the ranks, ice-cold against the spines of the warriors.
"What is the nature of this disturbance?"
A White Scars legionary gripped his bolter, his eyes narrowing with the hard-bitten caution unique to a veteran of a hundred campaigns.
"Prepare for battle!"
Jaghatai Khan's voice boomed like a clarion toll across the host. His piercing gaze locked onto the fathomless depths of the Webway tunnel, where a massive, malevolent surge of Chaos energy was rushing toward them like a cresting tide.
Beside his Primarch, Hurkha closed his eyes, psychic currents roiling violently around his form as he strained to interpret the sudden cataclysm.
"Great Khan! This force is immense... it reeks of the Archenemy. And it... it seems to emanate from a celestial body of staggering proportions!"
Jaghatai Khan looked in the direction Hurkha indicated. Piercing through the structural walls of the Webway came a colossal planet, hurtling directly toward them. The world's surface pulsed with a sickening, baleful violet light, resembling a hellish, lidless eye scrutinizing their every movement.
"Whatever that abomination is, its profane stench is intolerable."
A grim resolve flickered in the Khan's eyes. He understood the lethal magnitude of this threat, yet a profound confusion lingered beneath his stoicism.
Vashtorr the Arkifane was hurtling through the Webway at breakneck speed, steering Wyrmwood while channeling the volatile, reality-warping energies of the Dissonance Engine toward his ultimate objective. He had never anticipated encountering such a formidable Imperial force in this forgotten transit corridor.
Though his primary machinations were spun to ensnare the Dark Angels, Vashtorr maintained extensive intelligence on the broader military assets of the Imperium.
"Does that wretched Imperium of Man seek to thwart me here as well?! How can this be?!"
Yet, Wyrmwood's momentum was too absolute. Driven by the Dissonance Engine, the planet was not merely navigating the Webway; it was tearing through its labyrinthine geometry in a straight line.
By the time the Arkifane registered the presence of the Adeptus Astartes, Wyrmwood acted like a gargantuan dragnet, scooping more than ten thousand warriors of the White Scars Legion and their Primarch, Jaghatai Khan, clean off the Webway path and dropping them onto its blighted surface.
Because the localized physics within the ruptured Webway were wildly erratic, much of the Legion's heavy gear was scattered across the drop zone, and numerous armored vehicles lay overturned. However, the transhuman physiology of the White Scars spared them from any immediate casualties.
The moment Wyrmwood breached the Webway and dragged them onto its crust, the tactical situation ratcheted to a razor-edge of tension.
"Maintain cohesion, brothers!"
The Khan's voice rang across the vox-channels, calm, resonant, and steeling the resolve of every warrior under his command.
Though questions burned in his mind, the Primarch's deep-seated loathing for the forces of Chaos dictated an immediate, aggressive response.
"We must uncover the secrets of this world and eradicate the malefic power driving it."
Under the Khan's masterful direction, the White Scars mobilized with terrifying efficiency. Their deployment reflected the absolute discipline of the Great Crusade era as squads fanned out in a synchronized reconnaissance sweep.
Engines coughed to life, letting out deep, mechanical growls that seemed to hurl defiance at the unknown world. In the 41st Millennium, these relic vehicles would be venerated as priceless Chapter sanctities, but here, they were simply the iron steeds of war.
Scimitar-pattern Jetbike squads tore across the rugged, jagged terrain like white phantoms. The streamlined chassis of these sleek machines caught the light as their riders handled them with consummate, lethal grace, weaving through the treacherous topography. Each hull bore the jagged lightning bolt of the White Scars, standing out starkly against the oppressive violet glow bleeding from the sky.
Falcata Attack Speeders vaulted into the upper atmosphere, their sharp, swept wings cutting through the heavy air with piercing shrieks. They orbited the vanguard, utilizing their heavy weapon systems and advanced augur arrays to map the terrain and provide comprehensive aerial surveillance. The pilots remained hyper-focused, scanning the shifting topography for any sign of hostility.
Bringing up the rear were the heavy operational elements, including lumbering armored transports and utility haulers laden with munitions and personnel. Their reinforced tracks bit into the cracked earth, effortlessly crushing the obstacles in their path as the fully armed legionaries inside stood ready to deploy at a moment's notice.
As the reconnaissance pushed deeper, the White Scars began to discern the true, horrific nature of the planet.
The landscape was choked with bizarre, blasphemous architecture and industrial superstructures completely alien to any civilized aesthetic. Their silhouettes were twisted and grotesque, constructed from asymmetric geometries and jagged, unnatural lines that defied architectural logic. The facades oozed a dim, thrumming violet radiance, seamlessly bleeding into the corrupt atmosphere of the world.
"These structures are highly anomalous," a Jetbike legionary reported over the squad vox. "They are radiating a distinct, localized warp signature of the Archenemy."
These horrors were the literal manifestations of Vashtorr's psyche, the materialization of the Fore of Souls and its simmering lakes of promethium and unholy machine oil.
The pungent stench of sulfur and burning ozone hung thick in the air. Around the bases of the looming monoliths, indistinct silhouettes shifted and writhed in the shadows.
"Do not approach. Maintain defensive intervals," Jaghatai Khan commanded, his voice cutting through the static. He knew that absolute caution was paramount when navigating the warp-born infrastructure of Chaos. "We have yet to ascertain the exact nature of the traps hidden within these works."
Right then, the forward Jetbike reconnaissance elements were violently ambushed by a swarming horde of daemon-engines.
The mechanical monstrosities were a horrific fusion of daemon flesh and corrupted iron, varying wildly in shape. Some were massive, ambulatory fortresses bristling with rusted spikes and whirring, circular buzz-saws. Others were sleek, serpentine constructs that darted through the air with terrifying speed, unleashing volleys of malevolent, crackling energy from their weapon mounts.
"Open fire!"
Without a moment's hesitation, the Jetbike riders brought their heavy bolters to bear. The weapons barked in unison, spitting a dense hail of mass-reactive shells into the oncoming horde.
However, the unholy amalgams possessed hyper-dense, warp-forged plating. The bolter rounds detonated against their hides in a useless cascade of sparks and shrapnel, failing to inflict any structural damage.
Reacting instantly, one legionary unholstered a plasma pistol from his flank armor. Leaning into the high-speed turn of his Jetbike, he leveled the weapon at a charging daemon-engine and squeezed the trigger.
A blinding sphere of superheated, azure plasma erupted from the coil, striking the mechanical beast squarely in the chassis. The containment fields collapsed instantly, melting a gaping crater through its reinforced armor. The daemon-engine let out a grating, metallic shriek of agony before detonating in a roiling fireball.
Seeing the efficacy of special weaponry, the rest of the squadron adapted their tactics seamlessly. Warriors began priming melta bombs and thermal breaching charges, while several legionaries dismounted their vehicles, hefting heavy multi-meltas to incinerate the remaining mechanical abominations with the white-hot fury of the Imperium.
