Rumble! Rumble! Rumble!
The ground buckled and rolled continuously, as though some gargantuan terror were wrenching itself from an aeon-long slumber. The entire forge-palace became hyper-saturated with oppressive Empyrean energy, causing reality itself to flicker and lose cohesion. Cascades of jagged raw warp-lightning arced across the structures. This anomalous energy did not merely mutate the local material architecture; it further warped and catalyzed the daemons and terrifying machinations garrisoned within.
Searing, toxic torrents of pressurized steam burst from fractured conduits, thick with profane power and carrying a suffocating reek of burning sulfur. This vapor mixed with the sweeping palls of black soot that blotted out the light, churning with impossible, geometry-defying shapes. The temperature within the complex skyrocketed exponentially. The layout of the fortress began to thrum and beat rhythmically, mimicking a grotesque organic heart.
The atmosphere choked on a cacophony of overlapping Chaos whispers and the deafening shriek of overdriven machinery. Architectural elements that had seemed static began to crawl and bend. The blasphemous runes and geometric configurations etched into the floors and bulkheads pulsed with a sickly, iridescent glare. Vashtorr's forge-palace was shifting, violently reshaping itself to accommodate its master's immediate whim.
Complex daemon-engines and mass-fabrication apparati were forced to full operational capacity. Enormous gears spun at frantic, screaming velocities, industrial chains snapped taut under immense strain, and monumental pneumatic hammers fell in rhythmic, earth-shaking beats, scattering cascading sheets of white-hot sparks. Glowing rivers of brass and molten metal surged along tracks and pipe networks that openly defied the laws of physics, pumping through the facility like arterial blood through a living beast.
Thoom! Thoom! Thoom!
"It... Chao... itan!"
The squad vox-links, which had been functioning within standard parameters, were now drowned out by violent, deafening static. The frantic warnings of the vanguard were reduced to unintelligible fragments.
Boom!
A blinding, colossal beam of violet-red energy tore through the smog, instantaneously vaporizing one of the Falchion super-heavy tank destroyers. Only when the backwash of that profane discharge burned away the intervening ash clouds did the surviving White Scars armor elements discern the identity of their executioner.
Looming through the tempest was a corrupted Chaos Titan. Judging by its mountainous silhouette and catastrophic frame, it was an Emperor-class colossus.
The atmospheric displacement caused by the god-machine's heat signatures warped the surrounding air into shimmering waves. Droplets of unholy, dull-red slag dripped from its joints. Millions of scrap-code runes flared across its defiled plating like burning sores.
A series of discordant, multi-tonal screeches erupted from Vashtorr's maw, a scrap-code battle cry that defied transhuman comprehension.
With that deafening roar, a localized techno-organic wave washed across the field. To their absolute horror, the White Scars riders found their Scimitar-pattern jetbikes veering wildly out of control, while the engines of Predator tanks and Rhino armored personnel carriers sputtered and died across the deployment lines.
Only the lone remaining Falchion super-heavy tank destroyer, built with hardened Crusade-era machine-spirits, rumbled relentlessly forward.
The fallen god-machine shifted its massive weight, its torso grinding with tectonic force as it locked onto the new target. The surviving Falchion swung its massive twin-linked volcano cannons in tandem, snapping off a defiant return shot at the behemoth.
Its sponson-mounted quad lascannons barked simultaneously, throwing a dense net of coherent light across the target, while its hull-mounted hunter-killer missiles leaped from their launch rails, trailing thick lines of white exhaust as they streaked toward the Titan.
Boom!
A succession of blinding explosions erupted several meters short of the Titan's metal hide. The machine's void shields flared violently, absorbing the apocalyptic impact.
The Emperor-class Titan had been completely revolutionized by warp-smithing. Its structural frames were fused with overlapping layers of defiled symbology and unnatural metal amalgams that flexed and knit together like living flesh.
Zzzzt!
Another massive beam of crackling warp-energy spat from the dual-barreled megacannon mounted to the Titan's right arm. This weapon had originally been a noble Imperial titan laser blaster, but it was now utterly corrupted, discharging a stream of raw, catastrophic entropy.
The beam flashed centimeters from the Falchion's hull, the sheer thermal displacement instantly atomizing nearly a third of the vehicle's external missile racks and scraping away layers of its dense armor plating.
"Avoid that Titan! All elements, break formation and scatter!" Jaghatai Khan's voice bellowed across the chaotic theater.
Though his scattered sons could not comprehend the full tactical picture through the blinding distortion, they obeyed instinctively, seeking whatever structural cover the ruined outworks could provide.
Shreeee!
A torrential wall of continuous laser fire erupted from the weapon system mounted to the Titan's left arm. Dark red beams carrying the literal stench of mortality raked across the terrain, punching through every obstacle in their path.
It was a titan-grade carronade, a multi-barrel turbo-laser destructor. From his elevated vector, the Khan had seen the weapon's massive barrels begin their pre-ignition spin. He had thrown his warning through the static-choked comms using the raw power of his post-human lungs, knowing the terrifying rate of fire this weapon possessed. It was a tool designed specifically to erase entire columns of light armor.
At the scale of an Emperor-class chassis, the power output of the turbo-lasers was augmented to a catastrophic degree. It was more than capable of boring straight through the armored hulls of Predator tanks.
The Great Khan's fears were realized within heartbeats. The armored detachment was systematically broken. Though the legionaries inside managed to abandon their disabled transports and use the dead hulls as emergency hard-cover, the accompanying Predators were blown apart by the saturating fire. Even the glacis plate of the lumbering Falchion, thick as it was, began to liquefy and slag away under the continuous onslaught. Unlike other Imperial super-heavy designs, the Falchion sacrificed comprehensive hull armor to accommodate the staggering power requirements of its twin volcano cannons; its hide was barely thicker than that of a standard heavy breakthrough vehicle.
While the Khan's booming command had preserved the lives of countless sons, his roaring psychic and auditory presence had drawn the absolute focus of the fallen god-machine.
Whoosh-whoosh-whoosh!
The thunderous ignition of missile pods echoed from the Titan's carapace mounts. A swarm of rocket fire, trailing thick white exhaust, arched into the air and bracketed the soaring form of Jaghatai Khan.
The Primarch yanked the handlebars of his jetbike.
Executing a flawless, high-speed kinetic drift in mid-air, he stabilized his vector while triggering the twin heavy bolters mounted to his bike's nose. The high-velocity mass-reactive rounds stitched a line through the sky, detonate the incoming missiles in a chain of mid-air explosions.
To escape the remaining blast radii, Jaghatai was forced to drop his altitude, skimming mere inches from the debris-strewn earth. Casting a single, complex look at his ornate, customized mount, the Primarch threw himself from the saddle in a desperate leap.
The remaining macro-missiles slammed into the ghosting jetbike, detonating it in a towering sphere of promethium flame.
"Great Khan!"
Seeing the explosion, the surrounding White Scars did not believe for a second that their genetic father could be felled by such a strike, yet a collective knot of tension tightened in their chests.
Boom!
An abrupt, catastrophically loud detonation tore through the internal superstructure of the Emperor-class Titan. It was followed instantly by a cascading chain of secondary explosions that ripped outward from its main reactor core.
"What?! No! Impossible!"
Vashtorr, who had been gloating over his impending victory, whirled toward the dying god-machine. His metallic voice broke into a frenzied, panicked shriek as the Titan's knees buckled.
"Kehehehe…"
A low, mocking chorus of discordant laughter seemed to echo from the very shadows of the valley.
The Arkifane froze, a realization striking his logic-cores like cold iron.
"TZEENTCH!"
Rising from the dirt and shaking off the layer of soot covering his armor, Jaghatai Khan stared in absolute bewilderment at the burning wreck of the titan, which was collapsing into the ruins of his own jetbike.
Bzzzt.
"My Lord?! My Lord, respond?!"
"I am intact, my Hawks. Tell me what has transpired here."
Hearing the steady, resonant tone of Jaghatai's voice, an immense wave of relief swept through the legionaries, particularly the members of his personal Keshik.
"Khan... it was Hurkha. He commanded several of our Stormseers to channel their collective psychic might. They used a localized warp-fold to teleport him and a utility hauler packed to the brim with melta charges directly inside the Titan's primary plasma reactor shielding."
Hurkha?!
Jaghatai's heart went cold. He keyed his command vox, his voice booming over the static.
"Hurkha! Acknowledge me! Report your status!"
Bzzzt...
"Lord... Brother Hurkha is no more. His final words through the link... he stated he had failed your trust, and asked for your forgiveness."
