Chapter 460 - A Flawless Coordination

As the engines of Huron's flagship, the Spectre of Ruin, roared to life, the massive fleet began its migration from the depths of the Maelstrom toward its northern fringes.

To secure their retreat, supplies salvaged from several worlds were stockpiled in highly visible, deliberately disorganized locations. At some of the larger supply hubs, Huron ordered the concealment of Cyclonic Torpedoes plundered from raided vessels. Among these munitions were common variants loaded with atomantic fire and raw plasma.

These terrible weapons were rigged with hair-trigger proximity detonators; the moment anyone attempted to approach and inspect the stockpiles, the charges would detonate, completely consuming them. Simultaneously, the automated defense systems on all orbital platforms and starports were fully activated.

These weapon systems were defiled with the blasphemous iconography of the eight-pointed star and saturated with massive amounts of Chaos energy. The Dark Mechanicus had brutally bound daemons into the machinery, shackling them through specialized rites to serve as corrupted machine spirits. Tormented continuously by the bizarre apparatuses devised by their Dark Mechanicus captors, the daemons within the mechanisms grew increasingly feral and sadistic. They hungered to rip everything to shreds, eager to sate their malice with flesh and blood.

With all preparations finalized, the Red Corsairs began a massive withdrawal toward the northern Maelstrom.

Because this region of space was notoriously unstable, where reality and the Warp bled into one another, not even the Red Corsairs dared to activate their warp drives here. Although daemons refrained from actively attacking these vessels so heavily steeped in the power of Chaos, the volatile tides of the Immaterium could still easily tear a ship apart.

It took several hours before Axion finally detected the energy perturbations left in the wake of the massive fleet. The energy tides stirred by the combined thruster wakes of so many capital ships were entirely distinct from natural Warp anomalies. Shifting from its previous cruising speed, the machine fleet began guiding the Imperial vessels forward along a definitive heading.

After dozens of hours in transit, the joint fleet finally arrived at the former stronghold of the Red Corsairs.

It was a stellar system defined by sheer spatial anarchy. The system possessed no stable star; instead, over a dozen planets were clustered together in defiance of all cosmic logic, as though gravity ceased to function the moment it left a planetary crust. Furthermore, half of these dozen worlds bore unmistakable taints of Chaos energy. The blasphemous marks of the eight-pointed star were clearly visible even from the void of space.

The machine fleet deactivated its gravitic tethers and began to deploy into battle formations. Behind them, the Ultramarines and White Scars fleets also brought their hulls about, angling their superstructures to achieve maximum firing arcs.

However, the automated weapon platforms left behind by the departing Red Corsairs opened fire first.

Stationary defense platforms were capable of housing far greater power grids, granting them scanners with significantly longer range. Weapons heavily saturated with Chaos energy spat forth countless beams of light. Marneus Calgar and Jaghatai Khan witnessed the combat methodology of the Iron Men firsthand for the very first time.

A sky-devouring deluge of purplish-red beams surged toward the fleet. As the Chaos weaponry discharged, it stirred ripples across the Warp, the ecstatic roars of daemon-infused machine spirits.

The assault cruisers in the vanguard swung their hulls broadside, their thick energy shields interlocking like an unyielding bulwark to absorb the brunt of the bombardment. Any residual gaps in the line were instantly filled by strike cruisers. Not a single lance beam breached the defensive perimeter of the Iron Men's fleet.

Immediately following the initial energy barrage came a dense second wave of torpedoes and missiles.

The railgun arrays aboard the assault cruisers commenced rapid-fire cycling. Countless projectiles, trailing faint glimmers of light, plunged into the void like a dense meteor shower. Interception detonations erupted precisely at the midpoint of the engagement envelope.

Backed by the supreme processing power of the Iron Men, every single incoming torpedo and missile was locked onto simultaneously. It took a mere two salvos from the railgun arrays to completely neutralize all incoming threats. The uncanny precision of the defense sent a chill through the observing Ultramarines and White Scars.

In a terrestrial theater, detonating one or two incoming missiles with a well-aimed boltgun was a feat any Space Marine could achieve. But the sheer volume of ordinance deployed in a void battle was astronomical, and calculating engagements across three-dimensional space was immensely complex. Yet, no matter how erratic or deceptive the enemy's vectors were, the Iron Men executed the interception with effortless ease.

As the first wave of enemy fire subsided, all heavy assault ships began a synchronized vertical descent, adjusting their coordinates downward. This maneuver cleanly cleared the firing lines for the strike cruisers behind them.

Nova Cannons and Fragmentation Cannons fired in unison.

Beams of brilliant orange and pale grey, carrying a heart-stopping payload of energy, raced toward the automated defense platforms that had just broken silence. Blinding void shields flared violently across the platforms under the impact.

Having discharged their primary armaments, the strike cruisers immediately climbed in altitude, banking their hulls to unmask rows of devastating plasma turrets. The descending assault cruisers and ascending strike cruisers moved in perfect tandem, opening clear firing vectors for the Imperial fleet at the optimal moment.

At this juncture, the crossfire reached its absolute zenith.

Having just finalized their tactical alignment, the Imperial fleet, still marveling at the seamless coordination of the machine fleet, finally unleashed its fury. Compared to the near-simultaneous discharges of the Iron Men's vessels, the Imperial bombardment appeared somewhat disorganized and fragmented. This stark contrast elicited a quiet sigh of realization from the Imperial commanders who had just witnessed the Iron Men's efficiency.

Nevertheless, the dense concentration of lance beams and macro-cannon shells achieved its objective. The overwhelming ordnance shattered the already flickering void shields almost instantly, triggering a cascading chain of explosions across the platforms.

Still maintaining their banked, ascending posture, the strike cruisers rotated their hulls until they were oriented almost vertically. Countless arcs of blue plasma erupted from their batteries, blanketing the void. Every single plasma bolt struck with mathematical precision, obliterating the remaining automated defense platforms without a single shot wasted on a redundant target.

Meanwhile, the sunken heavy assault cruisers fired their engines, venting violent torrents of energy as they surged forward in a spearhead charge. The lance weapons mounted on their prows gleamed with a cold, lethal light.

Calgar and Jaghatai immediately ordered their fleets to follow in the wake of the Iron Men's assault ships. Allowing an ally to spearhead a charge alone was entirely contrary to their doctrines.

As they pressed the advance, Jaghatai also directed the high-speed vessels of the White Scars vanguard to fan out and scout the periphery. Despite the engagement lasting only a few brief minutes, they had not visualised a single enemy hull.

This absence struck Jaghatai as highly anomalous. According to their intelligence briefs, the Red Corsairs commanded a formidable naval presence, with a fleet numbering several times that of the White Scars. If the enemy was merely using their base and automated defenses as bait to lure the joint fleet into a trap before attempting an envelopment, it would bode ill for the campaign.

What Jaghatai did not know was that Huron was already acutely aware of the sheer combat efficacy of the Iron Men's vessels. The reason the Red Corsairs had fled so decisively was because their concealed scout ships had observed the vanguard of the approaching fleet, specifically, the one hundred Iron Men warships leading the formation, just as the Imperial forces entered the booby-trapped zone.

While the Red Corsairs possessed an immense number of hulls, their true core strength consisted of only a hundred or so cruisers and a few dozen battleships; the vast majority of their strength lay in destroyers, frigates, and other mid-to-small displacement vessels. Had the approaching threat been a joint fleet composed solely of the Ultramarines and White Scars, Huron might have attempted a fleet engagement. However, the presence of those one hundred machine vessels, each boasting the durability and firepower of a battleship, stifled any desire to stand and fight.

This remained true even though the entire joint fleet numbered fewer than five hundred hulls and the Corsairs possessed stationary defensive works.

The Red Corsairs had learned this lesson the hard way when the Iron Men first began escorting the Imperial tithe fleets. On that occasion, a Corsair raiding pack consisting of three light cruisers and over a dozen destroyers and frigates had intercepted a tithe fleet escorted by only a single Guardian-class medium integrated vessel. The outcome had been catastrophic; utilizing just that single Guardian-class warship, the machine defenders had systematically annihilated the pirate fleet, leaving only a single, heavily crippled light cruiser to limp back to Huron.

Similar engagements had repeated themselves numerous times across subsequent sectors, with the pirates suffering staggering losses on every occasion. From that point onward, the heretic raiders had internalised a vital rule of survival: steer clear of the silver-hulled warships of the machine.
