Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Rite of the Phoenix

The temple was silent, save for the soft crackle of the chained flame above. Shadows rippled along the molten walls as Kael and Lira stood before Sareth, who moved with the calm certainty of one who had seen lifetimes burn and rebuild.

He drew a circle on the ground with a thin rod of gold. The metal hissed against the stone, leaving behind a trail of red fire that shimmered like liquid light. When the circle closed, Sareth whispered words that sounded ancient, older than any tongue Kael had heard.

"From the ashes we rise. From the flame we remember."

The air trembled. The temple seemed to breathe.

Lira took a cautious step back. "What's happening?"

Sareth didn't answer. His voice deepened, echoing. "Kael, step forward. The Rite will not wait. The Phoenix tests only those it deems worthy of rebirth."

Kael hesitated, then stepped into the ring. The moment his foot crossed the line, the world shattered like glass.

The temple vanished. The air turned white-hot, and he found himself standing in an endless desert of ash and flame. Above him, a burning sky. Beneath his feet, the bones of giants.

And ahead—

A figure stood, cloaked in shadow, with burning wings of crimson light.

The Phoenix.

Its voice filled the air, neither male nor female, but all at once.

"Child of fire and storm. Do you seek control… or freedom?"

Kael clenched his fists. "I seek the strength to protect those I love."

The Phoenix tilted its head, eyes like molten suns.

"Then face what you fear most. Only truth can temper the flame."

Suddenly, the sand around him twisted into visions—his home, his grandfather, the night his parents vanished. He saw himself as a child, helpless, screaming as the shadow swallowed his village.

"Stop!" Kael shouted, his voice echoing through the inferno.

The Phoenix's voice rumbled like thunder.

"You fear not the demons, but the fire within. You fear yourself."

Kael's hands ignited with silver flame. "If I must burn to be free, then so be it."

He charged forward. The Phoenix met him with a roar, its wings engulfing him in a hurricane of light.

The pain was unbearable—fire that didn't just sear flesh but memory, stripping away lies and weakness. For a heartbeat, he saw everything—his lineage, the curse of the Silver Dragon, the betrayal that bound their bloodline.

Then darkness.

When Kael awoke, he was back in the temple. Lira was kneeling beside him, worry etched across her face. Sareth stood nearby, watching quietly.

"You passed," Sareth said softly. "But the flame has changed you."

Kael sat up, gasping. His veins glowed faintly silver beneath his skin, pulsing like living light. The mark on his arm had spread across his shoulder, branching like veins of fire.

"What… what happened?"

Sareth smiled faintly. "You touched the Phoenix and survived. You are no longer bound by blood alone, Kael. You are reborn in flame."

Lira's voice was a whisper. "And what does that mean?"

Sareth turned to the chained flame above.

"It means," he said, "that the demons will feel your presence before they ever see your face. The war has truly begun."

He looked back at Kael, eyes grave.

"And if you fail to master what now burns within you, that same fire will turn on all you love."

The last chains around the great flame cracked with a sound like thunder. Sparks rained from the ceiling.

Kael rose, his shadow now outlined in light. "Then teach me to control it."

Sareth nodded once. "At dawn, we begin the second trial—the Trial of the Three Flames. But first…"

His expression darkened. "You must learn what your grandfather truly did to earn the Silver Dragon's curse."
