Chapter 38 - Chapter 37: The Judgment Flame

The sky burned white.

Wings of pure radiance tore through the clouds, and for the first time in centuries, the heavens opened over mortal soil. The Guardians descended — not as whispers or omens, but as living fire.

Lira shielded her eyes, the force of their arrival sending waves of wind across the crater. Kael stood unmoving, silver and black flames flickering faintly around him like dying embers.

When the first Guardian touched the ground, the earth turned to glass.

"Kael of Silver Blood," a voice rang out — neither male nor female, but echoing with power that shook the air. "The balance is broken. The flame has been tainted."

Kael's jaw tightened. "You think I don't know that?"

Another Guardian descended, their wings unfolding like blades of light. "The Demon King is gone, yet his essence endures — within you. You have become what we swore to destroy."

Lira stepped forward. "That's not true! He fought for this world—"

The first Guardian's eyes flared. "Silence, mortal."

But Kael raised his hand. "No. Let her speak."

The light flickered at that command — for a moment, just a heartbeat, the Guardians hesitated. Power recognized power.

Lira's voice trembled, but she didn't stop. "Kael saved us all. If the Demon King's power clings to him, it's because he contained it — not because he surrendered to it!"

The lead Guardian tilted their head slightly, unreadable. "Containment… or corruption?"

Kael's wings unfolded halfway — one gleaming, one cracked and dark. "If you came to kill me, do it. But don't pretend you understand what I carry."

"We understand perfectly," the Guardian replied. "The Vessel of Fire and Shadow cannot exist without consequence. You are an abomination to the Flame's Law."

The word abomination echoed like thunder.

Kael took a step forward, eyes burning gold and black. "You speak of law, but where were you when this world burned? When the demons slaughtered villages? When the heavens turned their backs?"

The ground shook under his feet, the crater glowing with silver veins.

Lira whispered, "Kael… stop."

But it was too late.

Kael's anger flared — and with it, the Demon King's voice hissed inside him, soft and delighted.

They fear you. Show them why.

The silver fire in Kael's hands turned black.

In a flash, the Guardians raised their spears — weapons of light forming from pure flame. The first one lunged forward, slashing downward. Kael caught the blade between his palms, the clash sparking shockwaves that split the ground.

Lira was thrown back by the force, screaming his name.

Kael's wings flared wide, energy bursting out — half divine, half infernal. "I don't want to fight you!"

"Then surrender your flame," the Guardian commanded.

Kael's voice dropped, rough and broken. "If I do, this world dies with me."

A long silence followed.

The light dimmed slightly, the sky trembling as the Guardians exchanged wordless thoughts.

Then the lead Guardian lowered their weapon. "Then you are cursed, Kael of Silver Blood. Neither of the heavens nor of the abyss. When the seventh eclipse rises, judgment will claim you."

And in a blink of light, they vanished — leaving only scorched earth and a heavy, sacred silence.

Lira staggered toward Kael, breathing hard. "What did they mean?"

Kael didn't answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on the sky, where faint embers still drifted down like falling stars.

"Judgment," he murmured. "They've marked me. When the seventh eclipse comes… they'll return."

Lira's voice softened. "Then we'll be ready."

Kael looked at her — really looked — and for a moment, a weary smile crossed his face.

"I hope so. Because if I lose control again…" His eyes dimmed. "…there won't be a world left to save."

The wind rose again, cold and sharp, carrying whispers of something vast moving beyond mortal reach.

Far away — in the ruins of the Citadel — a single shard of black crystal pulsed once, faintly.

And in its reflection… something stirred.
