Night wrapped around the forest clearing like a heavy cloak, quiet and still after the chaos of the shifting maze they had only barely escaped. Kael and Lira lay asleep beside the fire, exhaustion pulling them deep. They had no memory of what truly happened — only that they were about to die… and then suddenly they woke up somewhere else.
Maelor sat awake, knees pulled to his chest, staring into the flames with an expression somewhere between worry and suspicion. He had been like that ever since they arrived here — alert, thoughtful, almost too quiet.
Kael groaned awake.
"…Anyone else feel like we skipped a few chapters of our own story?"
Lira pushed herself up, rubbing her eyes.
"You mean how we were about to be killed one moment, and then just... woke up in a forest? Yes. I noticed."
Kael turned to Maelor.
"Do you know how we got here?"
Maelor kept his eyes on the fire.
"Nope."
Kael narrowed his eyes.
"That was too fast."
Lira crossed her arms.
"Maelor… what aren't you telling us?"
"Nothing," Maelor said, forcing a smile that was absolutely the expression of someone hiding something huge. "I'm just as confused as you."
Before either Kael or Lira could press him further—
The ground pulsed.
Not shaking.
Not an attack.
A soft thrum that seemed to echo from the earth's core.
The fire bent toward the east, flames leaning as if pulled.
Kael stood.
"Oh good. The ground is breathing. That's normal."
Lira pointed.
"The forest is glowing—"
A circle of pale blue light spread across the ground, symbols blooming like flowers. The earth folded inward, stone peeling back in smooth, controlled motion until a staircase appeared, descending into a faint blue glow.
Kael stared at it.
"…Why does every mysterious thing want us to go down?"
Lira stepped toward it, brushing dust from her clothes.
"We're obviously meant to see whatever is in there."
Maelor groaned, dragging his hands down his face.
"This is exactly how people die in old legends."
Kael clapped him on the back.
"Great. Then you're coming first."
They descended together.
The stairs led into a circular chamber carved from stone darker than night, yet polished until it shone like glass. Patterns etched into the floor glowed faintly, reacting to their presence.
At the center of the chamber sat a pedestal — shaped like a dragon's talon.
Hovering above it:
A scroll wrapped in silver light, suspended as if held by invisible hands.
Lira approached slowly.
"What… is this place?"
Kael's eyes traced the carvings. "It feels ancient. Like thousands-of-years-before-the-dragons ancient."
Maelor swallowed hard.
"It's older."
Kael shot him a look.
"Wait — that you know?"
But Maelor pretended he didn't hear.
The scroll pulsed with soft light, inviting them closer.
Kael reached out.
"Careful," Lira warned.
Kael touched the scroll.
Light exploded outward — not blinding, not burning, but awakening.
Symbols across the chamber walls ignited. Glyphs spiraled into motion. The pedestal shimmered with old magic.
The scroll unfurled itself midair.
Three glowing circles appeared on its surface, each marked with runes none of them recognized.
Maelor's breath hitched.
"No… way…"
Lira glanced at him.
"What is it?"
Maelor hesitated.
He clearly recognized what he was seeing — and clearly tried not to.
"…A map," he finally said. "But not just any map. These are the Three Hidden Realms."
Kael frowned.
"Never heard of them."
"You weren't supposed to," Maelor said quietly. "Nobody was. These realms were sealed away… erased… before any living history."
The realms glowed brighter:
The Veiled Expanse — a realm where time bends.
The Sovereign Deep — a drowned world of titans.
The Shattered Crown — ruins drifting above storms.
Lira stepped forward, awe softening her voice.
"Why would a map like this reveal itself to us?"
Maelor didn't answer right away.
His eyes darted to the shadows — as if expecting to see someone there.
"Because something wants us to find them," he whispered.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
"You said that like you know who."
Maelor shrugged quickly.
"I'm guessing! Just a guess!"
He was definitely lying.
The map curled itself into a solid, physical form and drifted gently into Kael's hands, binding to him with a pulse of silver light.
Kael stared at it.
"…Well, great. I guess this means we're going realm-hunting."
Lira exhaled, steadying herself.
"Then our path is set."
Maelor turned away, hiding the way his hands shook.
"Yeah," he whispered.
"But not by us."
The three stepped back as the chamber grew dim again, the magic receding into the walls. The pedestal's glow faded until the room became silent once more.
They climbed back up into the night — unaware that far above them, unseen, a pair of ancient eyes watched with faint amusement.
