Chapter 61 - CHAPTER 3: THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Two days later, the expedition set out. Their caravan was a testament to cooperation wagons built with Frostborn ice wood that never rotted, pulled by creatures from the Earthwarden plains that could carry heavy loads across any terrain. Waterkeeper magic kept their supplies fresh, while Firekeeper forges allowed them to repair tools as they traveled.

The first part of their journey took them through Eldoria's northern forests, where they encountered a village struggling with magic sickness. The trees were growing so fast their roots were breaking through houses, and the villagers' ability to communicate with forest creatures had become chaotic they were hearing hundreds of voices at once.

Torin stepped forward first. "In my land, we know that when plants grow wild, you don't cut them down you guide their roots to where they can grow strong," he said. Working with the villagers, he showed them how to redirect the tree roots to form natural supports for their homes, turning a problem into a solution.

But the villagers' confusion remained. Zara mixed a grounding poultice from desert herbs and forest clay, while Lena used her cold magic to calm the chaotic energy, creating a gentle stillness that allowed the villagers to focus.

"See what we can do when we work together?" Maya said to her team as they rested that evening. "Torin's earth knowledge, Zara's grounding techniques, Lena's calming magic none of us could have solved this alone."

As they traveled further, crossing into the Sandspire desert, the challenges grew. The heat was intense, and some of the students struggled with the harsh conditions. Kenji used his knowledge of beacon magic to create a protective field that kept them cool without blocking the sun entirely important for the Sandspire students, who needed sunlight to maintain their balance.

One night, as they camped at the edge of the desert, Kai sat apart from the others, staring into their campfire. Maya joined her.

"I'm worried," Kai admitted. "Back home, my cousin's fire magic burned down half her village. What if we can't find a way to fix this? What if our magic is just… broken?"

"It's not broken," Maya said gently. "It's changing. And change can be scary, but it can also bring new strength. Your fire doesn't just destroy it warms homes, cooks food, forges tools. We just need to find how to help it do what it's meant to do."

She put her hand on Kai's shoulder, and for a moment, they shared their magic Maya's steady balance and Kai's warm energy combining in a way that felt right, felt natural.

When they set out the next morning, Kai walked with the others, her head held high. They were ready for whatever lay ahead.
