Chapter 75 - CHAPTER 6: THE DESERT'S HEART

Kaelen led them to the central structure, which he called the Heart of the City. Inside, a massive chamber opened up beneath the starlight dome, and in its center was a pool of water that glowed with golden light. But it was more than just water – Zara could feel the raw power contained within it, the same energy that pulsed through the desert above.

"This is the source," Kaelen said, gesturing to the pool. "All the desert's water flows from here, all its magic is connected to this place. When the city was hidden, we created barriers to keep the primal magic contained. But those barriers are weakening as the magic grows stronger."

Mira stepped forward, her eyes wide with wonder. She reached out a hand toward the water, then pulled back slightly. "It's beautiful," she said. "But it's wild. Unpredictable. If this were to flow freely into the world's water systems, it could disrupt everything."

"Which is why it was hidden," Kaelen confirmed. "The people who built this city understood primal magic, knew how to work with it. But they also knew that in the wrong hands, or in a world not ready for it, it could cause great harm. So they made the choice to hide it away, to wait until the world was ready to understand."

Zara knelt beside the pool, feeling the magic call to her. It was different from the balanced magic she was used to – more intense, more immediate, requiring complete trust rather than control. She thought of the Lost Basin, of how they had learned to dance with magic rather than command it.

"Maybe the world is ready now," she said. "We've learned that balance isn't about controlling magic – it's about working with it, finding ways to integrate different kinds of power into a system that serves everyone."

Elias had been studying the carvings on the chamber walls, and now he spoke up. "These texts tell of a time when primal magic and structured magic worked together," he said. "The beacons weren't meant to replace the old ways – they were meant to complement them. But something happened, some crisis that led to the decision to separate them."

"What happened?" Zara asked Kaelen.

"Fear," he replied simply. "People became afraid of what they couldn't control. They thought that to be safe, they had to eliminate anything that didn't fit their idea of order. So the primal magic was hidden away, and the knowledge of how to work with it was lost – almost completely."
