Chapter 104 - ACT TWO: BENEATH THE WAVES AND BEYOND THE ICE

CHAPTER 5: DESCENT INTO DARKNESS

The descent into the Trench of Echoes was unlike anything Mira had ever experienced.

They traveled inside the Abyssal Walker, a submersible craft Orin had built over years—an egg-shaped vessel made of reinforced crystal and coral, enchanted to resist the crushing pressure that could turn stone to dust. Outside the viewports, the world was absolute blackness, broken only by the ghostly blue, green, and red glows of creatures that never saw the sun.

"Down here," Orin whispered, his hands moving over the controls that responded to water pressure, "time moves differently. Pressure is weight, and weight is memory. Every layer of water holds the memory of what happened above it, centuries ago."

As they went deeper, the magical interference grew stronger. The lights flickered. The compass spun wildly. Mira reached out with her magic, trying to feel the current, but it was like pushing against a wall of solid lead.

"It's just… stagnant," she said, shivering despite the warmth of the cabin. "All this power, all this life… it's just sitting here, building up, getting hotter and wilder because it has nowhere to go."

"Look," Orin pointed ahead.

Emerging from the darkness was a structure so massive it defied perspective. It looked like a spire, but one that had been turned upside down, rooted into the very bottom of the world. It was made of a black, glass-like substance, covered in glowing runes that pulsed with a frantic, erratic rhythm. This was the Deep Spire, the ancient regulator of the world's heat exchange system.

But something was wrong. The great vents and channels that should have been open, allowing cold heavy water to sink and warm light water to rise, were sealed shut. Massive growths of mineral and solidified magic had formed like scar tissue over the openings.

"It tried to close itself off to protect the deep," Orin realized. "When the magic became too chaotic, the Spire reacted like a wound. It scabbed over. Now nothing gets in, and nothing gets out."
