Chapter 46 - Ava’s Shadow

Something felt off from the moment I woke up. The sun was shining over the city, but a chill ran down my spine as if the light couldn't reach the shadows creeping into my life. I couldn't explain it—an unease I hadn't felt before, a weight pressing on my chest I couldn't shake.

Even as I got ready, every sound seemed amplified. The distant hum of traffic, the elevator chime, the soft tap of shoes in the hallway—it all felt… wrong.

I tried to dismiss it. Paranoia, I whispered to myself. After everything that's happened, maybe my mind is just… on edge.

But deep down, I knew it wasn't paranoia. I had felt the shift in the office earlier that week. Small things—Ava lingering a second too long in the hallway, her smiles that didn't reach her eyes, the whispered messages that disappeared before I could read them fully. And now… there were signs in my apartment too. Small, subtle ones. A moved vase, a note that wasn't there yesterday, the faint scent of perfume that wasn't mine.

My hands shook slightly as I made my way to the office. The test results were still fresh in my mind, the life growing inside me a constant, pulsing reminder that everything had changed. Alan had been protective—but protective didn't even begin to cover what I felt from him. Possession, obsession, intensity—he had claimed me, my child, in ways no one else could understand.

And now there was Ava.

I didn't know what she was planning, but the feeling of being watched, of danger lurking just beyond the surface, made me hyperaware. Every glance, every whisper, every look that came my way set my nerves on edge.

I had to be careful. I had to stay alert.

Alan — POV

I noticed it the second she walked into the office that morning—the tension coiling around Julia like a snake ready to strike. My gut clenched. Something was wrong.

I'd seen the signs before with Ava, but this… this was different. Calculated. Dangerous. Dark.

My eyes scanned the office, noting her every movement. Every hesitation, every tremble, every small glance over her shoulder screamed warning.

And then I saw it—a shadow of Ava lurking near the corner, pretending to file papers, but the way her gaze followed Julia, the subtle tightening of her jaw, the almost imperceptible smirk—it was deliberate.

I felt a dark anger coil inside me. This wasn't just jealousy anymore. This was obsession. This was dangerous. And I wouldn't let her harm Julia. Not now, not ever.

I stepped closer as Julia passed by my desk, lightly brushing her hand as a grounding gesture. "Stay close today," I murmured, voice low and urgent. "I'll be watching. Don't let her out of your sight."

She gave me a small, tense nod, but I could see the worry in her eyes. She knew. She felt it too.

Julia — First-Person POV

The day passed in a blur. Every interaction, every glance, every whisper made my nerves fray. I tried to focus on work, on the life I still had to maintain, but Ava's presence was inescapable.

I noticed it in the elevator—Ava had cornered me for a "friendly chat." Her smile was cold, her eyes sharp.

"Julia," she purred, voice sweet but venomous. "You're glowing. Must be… exciting news?"

I froze. How much does she know?

"I… I—yes," I managed to say, keeping my voice neutral. "It's… private."

Ava's smirk widened. "Of course. But you know, secrets have a way of slipping out." She leaned just a little closer than necessary, and I felt the subtle threat in her presence. A predator toying with prey.

I forced a polite smile, stepping back. "I'll keep that in mind."

Her laugh followed me as I left the elevator. A cold, sinister sound that echoed in my mind.

Kai — POV

I had been watching quietly, as usual. But the tension in the office wasn't subtle anymore. I noticed Julia's hands trembling, her eyes darting over her shoulder constantly. And then I noticed Ava's presence—the way she lingered too close, the calculated smiles, the subtle intimidation.

Something dark shifted inside me. I wasn't going to let her manipulate Julia. Not her. Not ever.

I clenched my fists. My jealousy had nothing to do with desire this time—it was pure protective fury. And if Ava thought she could use me or my position to get close to Julia… she was gravely mistaken.

Julia — First-Person POV

By the time I got home, I was exhausted. My body ached from tension, from worry, from fear. I thought maybe, just maybe, I could find some peace.

But the apartment wasn't quiet.

A note was on the counter. No words—just a single line written in precise, almost surgical handwriting:

"You can't hide from me forever."

My stomach dropped.

I gripped the edge of the counter, my mind racing. Ava. It had to be her. She wasn't subtle anymore—she was sending me threats, reminders that she was everywhere, watching.

My phone buzzed. Alan's name flashed. I answered immediately.

"Julia," his voice was tight, urgent, protective. "Where are you? Are you okay?"

"I… I think it's Ava," I whispered, voice trembling. "She… she's escalating. She left a note."

There was a pause, then Alan's voice dropped, low and dangerous. "Stay where you are. Lock every door. Don't answer anyone. I'll be there. Kai too. We're coming for you."

Alan — POV

Every second felt like torture. My anger had shifted into full-on protective obsession. Ava had crossed a line, and I would make sure she never threatened Julia again.

Kai and I were moving fast, silently, communicating with glances. This wasn't just office politics anymore—it was about survival, about protecting her, about stopping a ticking time bomb before it exploded.

I clenched the steering wheel, teeth gritting. "She doesn't touch her," I muttered. "Not now. Not ever. Anyone who tries… will regret it."

Kai — POV

Alan's intensity was palpable. I felt it resonate through the car as we drove side by side to Julia's apartment.

"Are you sure she's alone?" I asked.

Alan's jaw tightened. "I don't care. I'll take care of whatever is there. You stay ready, stay sharp. Don't let her out of your sight."

My stomach churned. Fear, jealousy, and desire—all mixed together. But above all, I felt an unshakable drive to protect her, no matter what.

Julia — First-Person POV

I paced my apartment, heart hammering in my chest. Every shadow seemed alive. Every sound—footsteps, distant traffic, even the hum of the refrigerator—felt like a warning.

And then the knock came. Quick, sharp, deliberate.

I froze.

Alan's voice came through the door, low and commanding. "Julia. Open it. Now."

I unlocked the door slowly, and there they were—Alan and Kai, standing together, a wall of protection, anger, and obsession all at once.

"Stay behind us," Alan ordered, voice rough. "Whatever she's planning… she won't get to you."

I nodded, trembling, feeling the weight of the day crush me, but also… a strange comfort. With them here, I knew I wasn't alone. Not against Ava. Not against anyone.

But the note still sat on the counter, ominous, cold:

"You can't hide from me forever."

And I knew… this shadow wasn't going anywhere.
