Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Hidden Fortress

The forest around them was silent, but Emma's instincts refused to let her relax. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves was a potential threat.

She pressed Liam against the rough bark of a tree, inspecting his shoulder wound. Blood had stopped flowing, but the deep gash needed proper care.

"We need a safe place," she muttered, scanning the foggy expanse.

"I know one," Liam whispered, teeth clenched against the pain. "A hidden facility from my days with Victor… abandoned now. If we can get there, we can regroup, heal, and plan."

Emma nodded. "Lead the way. Quietly. We don't want Victor knowing we're still breathing."

••• The Journey

The trek through the forest was grueling. Liam limped, Emma supporting most of his weight while keeping her knives within reach. Shadows twisted around them, as though the forest itself was alive.

"Why bring me here?" Emma asked sharply. "This place—was it meant for Syndicate operations?"

Liam's eyes darkened. "Yes. Hidden, fortified, off any maps. It was supposed to be our command post if missions went wrong."

Emma frowned. "You trust that it's empty?"

He swallowed. "I hope so. But I won't lie—Victor could have set traps. This is still his territory."

---

••• Discovery

They reached a clearing, and in the moonlight, the hidden fortress emerged from the ground: a concrete structure covered in vines, reinforced doors, and narrow windows built for defense.

Emma's eyes scanned every detail. "This place is built for war… not comfort."

Liam nodded. "Exactly. But it's better than dying in the forest."

The doors were heavy, rusted in places, but Liam managed to bypass the old locks. Inside, dust hung in the air, machinery long abandoned, but most systems—power grids, communications—were still operational.

Emma let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "Safe… for now."

••• Tending Wounds

Liam collapsed onto a metal bench. Emma knelt beside him, tearing strips of cloth from her sleeve to bandage his shoulder.

"You've been reckless," she said quietly.

"I didn't have a choice," Liam murmured. "Victor… he'll kill you if I don't protect you. I made mistakes—big ones. I should've never let him get this far."

Emma looked into his eyes, fierce and unwavering. "We fix this together. But from now on, no more surprises. No more running into traps alone. You work with me."

He hesitated, then nodded. "I'll follow your lead… if you let me."

---

••• Preparing for Battle

Emma moved through the fortress, checking supplies, makeshift weapons, and old Syndicate intel left behind. Each piece of information was a puzzle: Victor's next moves, Syndicate divisions, sniper placements, and drone patrol patterns.

"This place has everything we need," she said, eyes lighting with determination. "We strike strategically, hit them where it hurts, and finally end this war."

Liam watched her, a mix of admiration and guilt in his expression. "You've changed, Emma… from the girl I thought I left behind to… this."

Emma smirked faintly. "I've always been like this. I just needed a reason to fight smarter… and harder."

---

••• The Plan

Emma laid out a rough blueprint of the Syndicate's operations on a dusty table. "Victor won't expect us to fight back aggressively. He thinks he's untouchable. But we have something he doesn't—"

"What's that?" Liam asked.

"Us. Together. And every weakness he left behind that he thinks I don't know."

The two siblings locked eyes. The weight of years, betrayal, and pain hung between them—but so did resolve.

Emma whispered, almost to herself: "Victor Kane… you picked the wrong family to destroy."
