Chapter 158: Only Through Comparison Can the Most Subtle Differences Be Found
Yin attribute chakra was closer to spiritual energy. Most shinobi in the ninja world possessed at least a little of it, using it for techniques like Summoning Jutsu and similar arts.
The difference was quantity.
After awakening his three tomoe Sharingan, Kenichi's process of extracting Yin chakra was not particularly complicated. Once he drew out a portion, he guided it into the test subject's amygdala.
The brainwaves immediately shifted in a different direction.
When infused with Yang attribute chakra, the body's energy, the subject had shown abnormal excitement, accompanied by physiological reactions and an overwhelming sense of pleasure.
Yang attribute chakra seemed to produce mostly positive effects on the subject, but Kenichi could not rule out hidden drawbacks. More observation and repeated trials would be needed to eliminate other possibilities.
[Log: After infusing a trace amount of Yin attribute chakra, the test subject exhibited strong...]
Kenichi glanced at the Uchiha strapped to the operating table.
The man stared blankly at the ceiling, as if he had gone numb in an instant.
Kenichi frowned. Was the amount too small?
He checked the EEG recording. The brainwave pattern looked strange enough that he could not interpret it at a glance. So he stopped hesitating and poured more Yin attribute chakra directly into the amygdala.
The change was immediate.
The test subject began to cry. His speech turned incoherent. Then he even lost control of his bladder.
This was not what Kenichi wanted. His goal was to create an image of extreme sadness, not this chaotic collapse.
Watching the trembling subject, and the fear creeping into his expression, Kenichi sighed.
The Yin infusion did have an effect, but it also seemed to activate fear.
This method failed to produce pure sadness. Whether it could ever reach the result Kenichi wanted was still questionable.
Still, he pushed forward.
Kenichi increased the amount of energy he was feeding in, wanting to see if the subject could awaken a two tomoe Sharingan under this level of stimulation.
Instead, the subject began to scream.
He roared wildly and struggled with everything he had, thrashing against the restraints like an animal trying to tear free.
The agitation was extreme. The amygdala region showed abnormalities, and the tissue there looked as if it were slowly maturing.
Kenichi ignored the screaming and focused on the amygdala itself.
As he injected a large amount of Yin attribute chakra, the amygdala began to change color, like meat simmering in a pot.
Kenichi did not know whether that meant it was ripe and ready, or whether something had gone horribly wrong.
Then the EEG recording displayed something even stranger.
The waves would drop to an unusually low peak, then spike upward in an instant, followed by a stretch of high frequency ripples.
Kenichi could not decode it. He was not a medical professional. He wrote everything down anyway, intending to consult his teacher later. His teacher had studied this field and should understand what these patterns meant.
"Ugh!"
With a final scream, the Uchiha's body went limp.
His heart stopped.
The brainwaves on the device flattened into silence.
[Log: After being infused with a large amount of Yin attribute chakra, the test subject died. Heartbeat ceased. Brain activity ceased.]
Kenichi stared at the corpse with mixed feelings.
The subject was dead, and he had contaminated the sterile lab.
More importantly, even in death, he had not awakened a two tomoe Sharingan.
Until his final moment, the Sharingan remained stuck at a single tomoe.
So even stimulation this intense was still not enough to force evolution.
A significant mutation had appeared in the amygdala region, but the moment the subject died, that mutation began to dissipate.
Kenichi cut into the amygdala area.
Before, it had been grayish white. Now it was flesh colored, like meat boiled in water.
But after he removed a portion, the discoloration faded rapidly. In almost the blink of an eye, the tissue returned to its original appearance.
Kenichi performed a basic dissection of the brain. At that point, it looked no different from an ordinary brain.
No obvious changes could be seen.
Of course, appearances meant little. He could not claim there were no differences just because he could not immediately detect them.
Kenichi called in a prisoner to clean up the lab, then went to the cell, dragged out another prisoner, and dissected that brain as well.
A one to one comparison.
"Is this hell…"
Some of the captured Uchiha had regained their senses while he worked.
They had witnessed what Kenichi had done, and fear flooded them so hard their bodies trembled.
Two of the female shinobi lost control of their bladders as well.
The stench spread through the laboratory.
Kenichi glanced back in irritation, but he endured it. Then he called the consumable supplier over to clean again.
The cleaner moved with frantic care.
He had seen the same kind of person dragged away earlier, and now that person lay cold on an operating table, head opened, life gone. That sight made him scrub the floor as if his life depended on it, polishing it so thoroughly it felt like he wanted to clean it until it could be licked spotless.
"This is just a trivial experiment," Kenichi said as he walked over. "Don't be so afraid."
He tightened the bindings on all the Uchiha again, ensuring none of them could move.
Then he glanced at the device beside him.
Their brainwaves had shown noticeable fluctuations, but they still had not reached the level of the previous subject.
"Have you opened your Sharingan yet?" Kenichi asked, looking at the Uchiha in front of him.
They stared back at him in terror and did not dare speak.
"If you don't answer," Kenichi said calmly, "you'll be the next one."
That did it.
Voices spilled out immediately.
The remaining three boys all had one tomoe.
The other female shinobi also had one tomoe.
Only one girl, thin and withdrawn, kept her head lowered, trembling, refusing to meet his gaze.
"My lord," the female shinobi beside her said shakily, speaking for her, "Shiori hasn't awakened her Sharingan."
Kenichi looked at the girl named Shiori.
She still had not awakened it.
That was not surprising. Even within the Uchiha, there were people who never awakened the Sharingan in their entire lives.
"Fine. I understand." Kenichi waved a hand.
If she had not opened her eyes, her luck was excellent.
Kenichi planned to use her companions to provoke her, to see if he could force the Sharingan to awaken. Then he could observe what happened after the awakening, her changes, her reactions, and everything that followed, which would make later research much easier.
He returned to his workbench and continued dissecting.
It was slow, exhausting labor. To observe with maximum precision, Kenichi even activated his three tomoe Sharingan and compared every structure carefully, one by one.
A full day passed like that.
Only when his eyes began to ache did he finally find something abnormal.
"Hm? What is this?"
Kenichi picked a tiny object from the brain tissue in front of him.
It was an extremely small tumor, so small it had fused into the surrounding amygdala tissue. If Kenichi had not used his three tomoe Sharingan to compare the brain tissue of an ordinary consumable and an Uchiha, he would never have noticed it.
"Interesting."
Kenichi licked his lips.
He had not expected to find such a small lump in the amygdala of an Uchiha.
It did not resemble cancer cells.
Kenichi had studied many cancer samples and seen how they looked at the microscopic level. This was different.
It was complete and orderly, like a cluster of cells that naturally belonged inside the brain.
The problem was that the ordinary person beside him did not have this tiny thing in their amygdala.
It was absurdly small, like trying to find a sesame seed that was only a quarter the size of a normal white sesame seed, buried inside a white pig's brain.
Kenichi carefully removed it, placed it in preservation fluid, and continued dissecting.
It took him three full days to finish comparing the differences between the Uchiha shinobi and the ordinary person.
There were differences, but not many.
The biggest discovery remained that small fleshy granule in the amygdala region.
There were also a few other structural differences, but those were located on the surface of the brain. Kenichi did not believe they mattered much, but he preserved them anyway.
What he cared about most was that small fleshy lump.
It was in the amygdala, and the amygdala had shown the most intense reaction in the earlier experiments. That made it highly likely this thing was connected to the Sharingan.
Kenichi turned to look at the Uchiha prisoners behind him.
The experiments and dissections he had performed in front of them were meant to provoke them.
Yet none of them evolved.
The result disappointed him.
"Forget it," Kenichi muttered, shaking his head. "I'll treat it like playing Pokémon. You only get experience when the opponent dies, and if you get enough, you level up and evolve."
So now the question was simple.
Which shinobi would sacrifice himself for science next?
The five remaining Uchiha trembled violently.
The girl who had not awakened her Sharingan trembled the hardest, head lowered so far it looked like she wanted to bury herself in the floor.
Kenichi pointed.
"You."
He reached out and grabbed a boy named Shin.
This one was interesting.
And from what Kenichi could tell, he seemed to be the strongest among them. That meant he should be able to endure the experiment longer.
Kenichi hoped he would not die too quickly.
Otherwise, he would have to find someone else.
