Chapter 175: The Sharingan Experiment That Almost Got It Wrong
The Sharingan particles in the amygdala of the second and third test subjects had increased by nearly half.
At this point, the organ inside the Uchiha that drove the Sharingan's evolution had essentially been confirmed. It was those particles.
Kenichi made a note in his experiment log without much emotion, then glanced to the side.
An ordinary civilian lay there as well, but the brain had already been dissected. There was nothing unusual in the amygdala, no Sharingan particles at all. Even after Kenichi subjected the man to extreme emotional stimulation, there was still no abnormal change. The brain's self protection kicked in instead, and the man fell into a coma immediately.
That was enough to confirm it.
The so called Sharingan particles Kenichi had named were something unique, something tied closely to the Uchiha's Sharingan. In his theoretical deductions, even the Uchiha's obsession with evolving their eyes was likely connected to it.
The only regret was that he had no Mangekyo user on hand.
If he did, he could compare the brain structure of a Mangekyo Uchiha and see whether there were further abnormalities.
"Still, for now, studying the difference between two tomoe and three tomoe doesn't matter much."
Kenichi looked at the Uchiha test subject in front of him. The man had already lost control of his bladder.
Yet he still had not fainted.
He remained fully conscious.
Kenichi had used the same method that previously forced the second tomoe to awaken, repeating the stimulation in a perfectly mirrored experiment. This time, there was no reaction at all.
The Sharingan looked like dead flesh.
If Kenichi did not know what he was looking at, he would have thought he was experimenting on a normal civilian.
"Conventional stimulation is useless now," Kenichi muttered, scratching his head. "But according to the records, the Uchiha eyes really do evolve through massive emotional shock. The third tomoe, and even the Mangekyo, it's always the same pattern."
He stared at the trembling subject, then frowned.
"Is my threshold for stimulating Yin chakra still not high enough?"
Kenichi raised a hand and pressed it over the man's eyes again.
A huge volume of Yin attribute chakra flooded into the Sharingan almost instantly, even spreading outward. The Uchiha who had barely calmed down began to convulse again, whole body shaking like a leaf in a storm.
Even so, the amygdala showed no sign of overclocking.
No surge. No shift. No evolution.
Kenichi fell into a long silence.
In the end, he could only pull back reluctantly and let the subject breathe.
He had almost played this test piece to death, and it still gave him nothing.
Then a blind spot struck him.
"What about me?"
Kenichi was Uchiha too.
And he already had the three tomoe Sharingan.
So he guided his own chakra inward and began exploring his own brain. The sensation was bizarre, like threading a needle in the dark, but he managed it.
There really was something in his amygdala.
A Sharingan.
And compared to the particles seen in two tomoe users, the Sharingan particle in Kenichi's own brain was larger.
That meant his guess was right.
The degree of the Sharingan's evolution was linked directly to the size and development of that particle.
Kenichi's eyes brightened.
If he could unravel the secrets of the Mangekyo, then he could push into Mangekyo territory himself and experience that chakra firsthand.
Kenichi strongly suspected it was Yin Yang Release chakra, and if that was true, it might even help him understand how to enter Six Paths Mode.
"It seems not everyone in the Uchiha can awaken the three tomoe," Kenichi said quietly. "Just like not everyone can awaken the Mangekyo. It's either talent, or it's genetics."
In the end, everything circled back to genes.
Could talent be quantified?
That was hard.
People could test IQ, but those standards were created by humans. Some people did not score high, yet still showed terrifying talent in other fields, painting, singing, dancing, basketball.
Genes, though, could be observed. They could be measured.
Kenichi even believed there might be a gene that affected intelligence itself. If he could identify it, perhaps mass producing high IQ geniuses would not be a joke at all.
"Could it be that the Uchiha possess a special gene that sets their upper limit?" Kenichi murmured, thinking out loud. "Emotional shock is only the key, but the gene is the lock."
The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
Uchiha were not all the same. If they were, then it would make no sense for some to awaken three tomoe and Mangekyo while others stayed stuck at one tomoe or two tomoe for their entire lives.
"There really is no absolute fairness in this world."
Kenichi exhaled, called for supplies to come clean up the mess, then left the laboratory.
There was no point continuing in this direction today. Only now did he truly understand why forcing the second tomoe earlier had not been considered some earth shattering breakthrough.
Emotional stimulation was a key.
But you still needed the lock.
For the Uchiha, some people had the lock, and some did not.
Was that fair?
Of course it was not.
"As expected," Kenichi muttered as he walked, "some people are born in Rome, and others are born to pull the cart."
He headed for Orochimaru's lab, planning to spend time there and isolate the Uchiha genes as thoroughly as possible.
Find that lock, run verification experiments, and maybe then, he could produce a truly groundbreaking result.
"Hm, there's still a month until the time I agreed with Shisui."
Kenichi glanced at the calendar and twisted his waist, loosening up.
"I wonder if that unlucky kid found the right people yet."
When Shisui arrived, Kenichi planned to draw a vial of blood, analyze Shisui's genetics, and check whether Shisui had that strange Sharingan inside his amygdala.
Kenichi had a strong feeling that the structure inside a Mangekyo user's mind would be different from everyone else.
After all, the gap between two tomoe and three tomoe was already obvious.
Kenichi's own brain was different from the other test subjects, so what would the brain of a Mangekyo user look like?
"Boom!"
The moment Kenichi stepped outside, a huge explosion sounded in the distance.
He rubbed his temples and, for the first time, truly understood Nagato's mood.
"It blew up again?" Kenichi's voice turned flat. "How many times has this been now?"
Ever since Sasori was brought here, explosions had become routine.
If Kenichi had not set up a soundproof barrier in advance, Konoha would have noticed long ago. Even with it, the barrier likely would not survive forever at this rate.
Kenichi looked at the smoke and dust and sighed. He did not go over.
Sasori's research path was different from his own, and Kenichi would not be much help by hovering nearby.
Right now, Sasori was focused on converting tailed beast chakra into usable energy. He was using the Nine Tails chakra he had obtained from Kenichi.
Originally, Kenichi had intended to sponsor it. He had not studied the Nine Tails chakra in depth, so handing it over for research was fine.
But Sasori insisted on buying it.
He offered 200 million yen on the spot.
Kenichi agreed immediately.
Two hundred million. That was enough to buy several Asumas.
"I really hope Sasori succeeds," Kenichi muttered, watching the smoke drift. "Otherwise, I feel like this hill will be turned into a basin sooner or later."
The Land of Rice Fields did not have a dedicated environmental restoration ninja team. If the damage got bad, they would probably be the ones repairing what they destroyed.
Every shinobi village had an environmental restoration unit. Those ninja specialized in restoring terrain, filling craters, rebuilding lakes, repairing bombed land, all the boring but necessary work.
Even then, if the destruction was too severe, it became far less effective. The natural environment still mattered. Restoring lakes in desert regions, for example, was a nightmare.
Otherwise, given the scale of shinobi battles, the entire world would have been wiped clean in less than ten years.
Kenichi followed the familiar route to Orochimaru's lab.
As he arrived, he saw a blonde girl standing there, doing facial recognition.
He recognized him instantly.
It was Orochimaru.
"Teacher, you're back?" Kenichi walked over, genuinely relieved. With Orochimaru around, everything felt more stable.
"Yeah," Orochimaru replied, turning his head. "I went out on a mission a few days ago. What was that explosion just now?"
Kenichi paused. It had been a while since he had seen Orochimaru, and Orochimaru looked like he had changed again.
Then Kenichi noticed the outfit and could not help thinking that it might be time for Orochimaru to change clothes, since this set probably would not work much longer. The chest area already looked like it was losing the battle.
What surprised Kenichi most was that Orochimaru returned like this at all. Usually, Orochimaru would simply discard the disguise and show his real form, but today he did not seem to care.
"That was Sasori," Kenichi said smoothly. He knew exactly what mattered most when explaining things to Orochimaru. "He's here because he wants to fund the aerial laboratory."
Sure enough, the moment Orochimaru heard the word fund, his expression softened.
"All right," Orochimaru said, sounding almost cheerful. "I'll reinforce the soundproofing later. Let him bomb as much as he wants."
