Chapter 218: Shisui, Your Eyes Are Mine!
"Lord Third," Fugaku said, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles whitened. He drew a slow breath, forcing himself to stay controlled. "I want to ask you something. Why is it that our Uchiha clan went out to perform a reconnaissance mission at the Village's request, and yet the entire team ended up completely annihilated?"
"Hm?" The Third Hokage raised an eyebrow. He calmly reached for the documents on his desk and began flipping through them as though this were nothing more than routine paperwork.
Fugaku did not speak again. He simply waited.
Two small squads. Two Uchiha squads. They had departed on the same mission and never returned. When the clan investigated, the mission office's answer was simple: annihilated.
Fugaku could not accept it.
If this were wartime, such losses would be tragically normal. But Konoha had already ceased hostilities with other villages. And yet something like this still happened.
He could not understand.
After a moment, the Third Hokage set the papers down and exhaled a thin stream of smoke from his pipe.
"Fugaku, I checked. Your squads were assigned to a border mission near the Land of Frost. It's suspected they encountered a Hidden Cloud squad. There were no survivors."
Six lives vanished with those words, as casually as the smoke curling in the air.
Fugaku stared at him.
There was no ripple in the Third Hokage's eyes. No hesitation. No sorrow.
Because he already knew the truth, and he had no intention of letting Fugaku hear it.
This plan had been Danzo's from the start. He had only nodded in agreement, allowing the mission office to cooperate.
As for whether Fugaku wanted the real answer, what did that have to do with him?
Fugaku's gaze remained steady, but the tension in his jaw deepened. He did not want that explanation. He wanted the truth behind it. He had already heard this excuse once, and he had not come here to hear it again.
The Third Hokage tapped ash from his pipe and waved a hand, dismissive.
"If there is nothing else, you can go back. Next month, I plan to propose at the meeting that the Uchiha return to your former clan grounds."
Fugaku's expression did not change, but he understood the meaning immediately.
On the surface, it sounded like a minor relocation. In reality, it was a goodwill gesture, a small concession meant to ease tension and show the Village was willing to soften its stance.
Whether that proposal would pass depended on what the other clans said.
Telling him in advance was also a message: You have time to operate. Go persuade whoever you can.
As for the two missing squads, what else could be done?
The Third Hokage had spoken. Hidden Cloud, no survivors. End of discussion.
What was Fugaku supposed to do next?
Turn against Konoha?
Since the day Shisui left the Village with some clan members, masked ninja had begun appearing around the Uchiha compound with increasing frequency. They lurked in the shadows, openly present while claiming it was protection.
Protection, they said, to prevent outsiders from deceiving Uchiha again, to prevent anyone from luring clan members out under the pretense of orders from high level officials.
But inside the clan, that only fed the flames.
The hawkish faction had grown stronger. Some were already using the situation to push for rebellion, urging the clan to overthrow Konoha's tyranny and reclaim Uchiha glory.
Fugaku felt tired, deep down in his bones.
At least he had forced himself to grit his teeth and send Sasuke and Itachi away.
If the worst happened, his two sons would still live.
After Fugaku left, the Third Hokage set the documents aside and drew on his pipe again, eyes lowered.
The Uchiha's rebellious intent was already obvious. It seemed necessary to speed up the process of dealing with them.
Konoha needed stability now. Nothing else.
As for the eyes of the Uchiha, those could be dug out and preserved after everything was finished. That renegade disciple supposedly had a method for preservation.
With that thought, the Third Hokage opened another file placed beside him.
A Root emblem was stamped on it.
He flipped through it slowly.
Shisui's disappearance did not matter. Danzo had already found a new replacement, one more willing, someone who claimed to desire peace between the clan and Konoha.
Meanwhile, far from Konoha's office politics, Kenichi arrived at his own facility and unsealed two bodies.
Shiori stared at the two trembling Uchiha with faint surprise. She recognized them at a glance. She had seen them on the streets before.
"Lord Kenichi, who are these two?" she asked.
"Consumables," Kenichi said flatly, wiping his hands.
He had just pulled them out of the sealing containers and immediately regretted it. The stench was overwhelming, so he used Water Release to wash them clean. Once they were clean, they could finally be used.
For this round of experimentation, he planned to begin with an eye dissection.
Obito had probably been waiting for him for a long time.
And Kenichi intended to give Obito a small surprise.
All that remained was installing the Mangekyo Sharingan.
"Understood, Lord Kenichi." Shiori glanced at the two clan members again. Her heart tightened for a moment, but she suppressed it immediately. She had always known what mattered more, and she did not show sympathy on her face. "Also, Lord Orochimaru returned this morning."
Kenichi's eyes sharpened with sudden excitement, but he immediately pressed it down. His main task came first.
"Teacher is back? I understand," he said, forcing himself to stay focused. "We will handle this first."
Kenichi led one of the test subjects to the operating table.
He met the man's eyes.
The Sharingan spun.
Genjutsu took hold instantly, locking the subject's mind in place.
Kenichi began the surgery.
After separating eyeballs multiple times, he had become efficient and precise. His hands did not hesitate. He removed the eyeball, dissected it carefully, and within a short time he saw what he wanted.
The Uchiha eye was different from an ordinary person's.
It contained three additional nerves.
At first glance, it did not look like much. But Kenichi did not believe the difference existed without purpose.
"Where do these nerves connect?" he murmured.
He attached chakra to the three nerves and traced the direction of transmission, following the subtle pathways like a map.
Soon, he found their endpoints.
One nerve connected to the superior colliculus, and also to the pineal gland within it.
The other two connected to the amygdala.
"The pineal gland…" Kenichi frowned slightly. "I remember this area stores some special substance. Why would a nerve connect here?"
He did not understand it yet. He did not know enough about the pineal gland, and this was not his specialty.
It was a pity he could not pull professional books from his previous life. If he had them, the pace of his research would be much faster.
Even so, he recorded everything carefully in his experimental log.
He marked it in red ink so it would stand out for future study.
Next, Kenichi directly severed the connection between the optic nerves.
Then he began the reconnection work.
In theory, this was extremely difficult. Nerves were tiny. A perfect reconnection was not easy.
But Kenichi had the Sharingan.
It took time, but he reconstructed the connection and restored the eyeball to the socket.
Only then did he release the genjutsu.
The subject woke up, staring blankly at the ceiling.
For a moment, Kenichi's heart tightened.
Is he blind?
Then the man's eyes moved.
They slowly focused, and when they landed on Kenichi, raw terror flooded his expression.
Kenichi was satisfied.
To be safe, he still performed several simple tests.
To prevent the subject from faking it, he used genjutsu again during another round of testing.
Only after confirming there were no problems did Kenichi relax.
He locked the consumable away again.
Then he created three Shadow Clones.
One would handle surgery on his own body.
The other two would remain on vigilance.
But as he prepared, Kenichi paused.
"I can't do the surgery here," he thought.
Obito already suspected him. And it was hard to say whether Black Zetsu was secretly observing him right now.
Kenichi packed his tools in silence, then left the laboratory.
He went to the airship, created a sterile medical room inside it, and took off.
Only after the airship rose into the sky did he begin the surgery.
No matter how capable Black Zetsu was, he was not going to fly up into the sky just to monitor him, right?
When it was done, Kenichi raised a hand to his face and touched around his eyes.
"Is this the Mangekyo Sharingan?"
A strange sensation spread through him.
His dynamic vision sharpened instantly, becoming stronger than ever.
And deeper than that, he could feel something contained inside his eyes, like a power with weight and texture, waiting for a command.
He tried it.
Inexplicably, he understood how to use it.
A dry sensation scraped across his eyes.
A chair placed beside him twisted violently, warped as if caught in a distortion, then vanished.
At the same time, a faint pain pricked behind his eyes.
It was not severe. If he had not been paying attention, he might have missed it.
"A single use consumes very little pupil power," Kenichi murmured, blinking slowly. "But this pain is real. I've seen people in later stages bleed when they use the Mangekyo."
It felt like his eyes had been forced open without blinking for three full minutes.
One of the Shadow Clones, the one who had performed the surgery, could not help asking, "So did you figure out what this pupil power is?"
Kenichi shook his head.
"I can't feel it clearly. Maybe I've used it too little, so the sensation isn't obvious yet."
He performed a vision test immediately.
Both eyes were at optimal clarity.
It seemed that a single use would not cause too much loss.
