Chapter 1 - Prologue

Kai blew the dust off his notebook. As the pages settled, the memories rushed back—the terrible things the people listed inside had done to him. His hands tightened. His chest burned. Rage and revenge filled him like fire he couldn't put out.

He swore to himself that he would get every single one of them back.

Kai slid the notebook into his right-hand pocket and headed downstairs to make his last cup of coffee. He poured himself a latte and drank it slowly, letting the warmth hit his throat as he thought of all the nights he had to shower in pain because of the scars they left on his body. And the countless times he accidentally killed people with abilities he never asked for.

The pain of never living a normal life. The years spent locked in dark facilities and freezers. The silence and the loneliness. All he wanted, at times, was a friend.

He finished his coffee, walked outside, and stood by a tree."Karma is a bitch," he said quietly.

Then he breathed fire ,real fire and burned his whole house down. The flames lit up the sky, crackling like they'd been waiting years to escape. Kai walked away slowly, mumbling, "Even memories have to burn."

A few hours later, he strolled into a police station and reported an attempted arson on his house. An old policeman raised his brow and asked, "Do you have any idea who might've done this, sir?"

Kai shook his head and replied in a worried voice, "No, Officer."

The officer sighed and told him to find a nice hotel in the city quarter.Kai rubbed his neck and said, "I have no money."

A soft, familiar voice cut in. "You can stay at my place, if you want."

Kai turned and saw her, Paige. He gave a small smile. "I would love to… but I can't, love." He lifted her hand and kissed it gently.

Paige grabbed a donut from the table and told the old general, "I'll take over this case."

"Thank you, officers," Kai said before stepping back.

Paige looked at him. "Where are you going?"

"Out of town for a while," Kai answered.

He took a donut for the road and walked swiftly out of the station. Minutes later, he bought a train ticket, boarded the train, and sat by the window. The attendant approached.

"Where are you headed, sir?"

Kai stared forward, a small chuckle slipping out."Home."
