Chapter 4 - The Last day of Innocence

"What are you doing here, big sis?"

"What do you mean? What are you doing? This is my home too; I can come here anytime. And who are you to ask me, huh?" my sister replied angrily. "Even though I was happy to see you, you're still an ass, don't you, Vynn?"

This is my sister Leyla Zane. She has a very strong personality and a very bad sense of humour. She was always making my life difficult when we were children. She liked to play harmful pranks on me. One time, she gave me a cake with an explosive inside. I was so happy to see the cake, yet when I moved forward to cherish that sweet chocolate cake, she just burst it open and started laughing.

She has long blonde hair with jade-pale skin. She has a very sharp face and light green eyes, her eyes are from my mother. She has a mark on her back. For some reason, everyone has a mark on their back except for my mother. All my siblings and father have a mark on their backs, which is black in colour and symbolises a weird mark I don't get. It's a family symbol, I suppose.

"I mean to say, why did you come here, sis? Didn't you have orders or duty on the border?"

"No. I was given a break for two months. I was constantly on the border, plus big brother says to let me relax a bit and, for some reason, my unit also agreed," she answered, looking visibly confused

"Yeah, maybe your bad humour might be a reason," I said with a grim smile on my face

"What did you say, you brat?" She lunged forward and grabbed me by the collar, and lifted me. She is tall, around my father's height.

"Might want to say it again, huh?"

"LEYLA ZANE, would you mind putting Vynn down?" Suddenly, the room temperature dropped to zero. There was a sudden chill in the air. My sister started sweating and looked behind her.

"Of course, Mo-mother. Here, Vynn. Did you get hurt?" "No, I suppose. Haha." She started laughing to ease the tension

"Vynn, come sit down, and you too, Leyla. I hope you have something to say to Vynn, too," my mother said calmly, yet it was an authoritative command from the general.

"Yeah." We arrived in the main living room. I sat in the chair, my mother sat across, and my sister sat beside me.

"Sera, can you please provide us with some drinks?" my mother asked.

"Of course, my lady."

"So, Vynn, how was your academy today?" she asked calmly, yet hinting that she was asking something different from what usually happens.

"It was fine, Mother, but I have news. For some reason, the Threadspire event has been pushed forward, and it's gonna be next month. That's why I was even more surprised to see my sister here."

"So, they've announced it. Your sister has come home under my order to your big brother. As you know, the Threadspire has shifted forward. I recalled your sister, so you can go train with her."

"WHAT? Do you want me to go train with this impeccable piece of shi—" I was startled by the very thought of training with my sister

"Language, Vynn."

"Sorry, but why do I have to train with my sister?" I said calmly yet in a retorting way as an objection to the idea

"Well, who do you think is a better candidate to train your physical Thread if not your sister? She has a mastery of physical threads."

"Yeah, she can manipulate physical threads very well, I know that, but. She can even use dark manipulation and somewhat use speed Threads too."

"Yeah, that's why I ordered her to train with you. And Leyla, no more pranks on him. He's a grown-up now," my mother smiled sarcastically, hinting toward my sister with a smile.

"Of course, Mother, you don't have to worry about him. I will make him a good soldier by the end of our training," she replied in the same way.

"Oh hell no, these two are up to something…"

"Vynn, be prepared. We are going on an adventure to train you. Don't you worry; I will protect you and train you well. You're the one and only little brother of mine, after all."

I sigh in tension, ohh no, what will I do, huh, I can hope for the best, I guess 'as I organise my thoughts. Sera came with the tea and informed us of the dinner

I ate my dinner and went to sleep

argh i know she can train me well but i dont like her personality i guess i have to take this trip if i want to get stronger otherwise i will lose my chance in the upcoming threadspire , vynn thought swirled as he watched the moon .

Another morning in the Kingdom of Vaylen. If you looked closely, the kingdom appeared prosperous. Its colour and marbles perfectly symbolise the royal lineage, golden yellow hair and pale skin.

If you think deeper, it also represents the Goddess of Life and Light. in vaylen the most prosperous and follow religion is of goddess of life and light , I wonder how this religion began and what are they trying to establish , maybe i should visit it even though our family is non religious i have never gone their . The monastery does good for the people, but no one knows its history and how it came to life; maybe it was lost in the course of time.

I should probably wake up. Today is the last day of the academy, and then I am leaving for my training with my sister. Sigh. I should properly say my goodbyes to Laya and Lark, even though I don't consider them my close friends I should at least say goodbye.

As I was thinking about what to do, a sudden knock came.

"Master Zane, have you woken yet?"

"Yes, Sera, I'm up. You can come in." I tried to make my voice sound steady, though i was still sleepy.

Sera never takes a day off—I should appreciate her more. Even though I admire her loyalty towards our family, I also see her as one of my oldest and only friends. She and I used to play together when I was younger.

"Huh, Sera"

"Is there any issue, Master Vynn?"

"No, no, you can do your work, I flustered."

"Alright then. I know you will be gone for some time for your training, so come back as strong as possible, or else I won't be serving you. Understand that?"

"As fierce as always. Don't worry about me, Sera; I am determined to develop my power. You won't have to worry about me."

"Huh, as expected. You are an unusual child from birth. That's why I like you and serve you personally. I will leave your coffee on the table. Goodbye, Master Vynn."

I nodded to Sera and started to get ready for the academy. I went down and saw my mother and sister discussing something. I interrupted them and said my goodbyes.

"Be safe on your journey, Vynn," my mother said gently

"Yeah, don't get hurt, you punk before our training, I want you in tip-top condition," my sister teased, lightly punching my shoulder.

As I was heading to the academy, I met Laya and Lark waiting for me at the crossroads.

"How are you, Vynn? Excited for your last day of academy life?" Laya asked, her voice bright but her eyes searching my face for signs of excitement.

"Yeah. I'm excited that I don't have to wake up early every day for the academy," I answered, trying to muster a smile.

Laya looked disappointed, her shoulders drooping.

Lark asked, "Oh, Laya, can I come see your mother? I've heard she returned from the border a couple of days ago. I'd like to train under her for the upcoming Threadspire."

"Yeah, about that, Lark, it's top secret, but I have to crush your dreams my mother departed for something three days ago. It was His Majesty's order."

"What? How come? Is it related to the Threadspire situation?"

"I don't know, but I am very worried for her. She's in her late fifties, yet she always goes to the front lines. Luckily, my older sister Talia is accompanying her."

The Harth family doesn't have a single male. They're a proud, all-women family. All Harth women wear a crisp red-orange peacock-shaped hairpin and are renowned for developing advanced Thread techniques. They can pass their Vessel to their chosen heir, though it takes the life of the previous holder. They're famous for their life and light manifestation threads. They select three promising orphan girls, calling their successive head 'Mother.'

"Don't worry, Laya. Lady Maria will be okay," Lark said confidently, trying to reassure her.

"Yeah, she's called the Red Blessed Peacock of Harth for a reason. I heard she once cleared out several hordes of Demorais by herself when defending the border one time, without any support from the main army. She was the previous youngest seat, and one time fought against three Demorai top generals and killed them all by herself."

"I'm just concerned for her health. She's in her late fifties, yet she goes to the front lines with my big sisters all the time. I'm afraid one day she'll die out there, and I'll never see her again," Laya whispered, her voice trembling.

"Don't worry, I'm sure she'll be alright. And don't stress too much. You need to be in top shape before the Threadspire," Lark replied.

"Yeah, Threadspire is just three months away. Just focus on ranking well you'll be by her side with your sisters soon," I said, hoping to calm her.

"Yeah, related to Threadspire, I'm dying to ask what your plans are?" Lark nudged.

"Well, I'm going to train with my brother. He said we're going to train under the mountains in extreme heat due to my liquid metal. What are you going to do, Laya?" Lark asked.

"Well, I'm going to train with my sister in our ancestral hall. There, she will help me form my Thread manifestation more easily. What are you going to do, Vynn?" she asked.

"Yeah, about that, my sister came home to train me. I will be going with her."

Lark immediately asked, "What? Has your sister come home? Which one—is it Leyla?"

"Yeah."

"Oh, don't you dare, Lark. That's gross," Laya said with a disgusting grin on her face

"Why is it gross? I like his sister as a human being should like another, why is it gross?"

"Huh, never mind. I don't think she's going to fall for your charms anyway."

"Yeah, Lark, my sister is someone you can't handle," Vynn smiled.

As we talked about my sister, we arrived at the academy. I took my seat, and Miss Anies arrived.

After the classes, I bid farewell to Lark and Laya, and we all decided to meet before the threadspire event

As I was walking, I arrived at my house, thinking what the next chapter gonna be with my sister, sigh, I really dislike her.
