Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — Waves of Laughter

The sun hung high in the sky, casting golden light over the endless stretch of the coastline. The Kim family, a whirlwind of laughter, chatter, and clattering luggage, had arrived at the beach resort for a well-deserved break.

Karan, slightly tense from weeks of college assignments and long hours at the restaurant, felt a rare sense of relief. His father, Mr. Kim, carried a cooler full of fresh seafood, humming a tune that echoed the rhythm of his kitchen. His mother, graceful and radiant as always, adjusted her sunhat while calling Korn to stop chasing the seagulls.

"Come on, Korn! You're going to scare them away!" Mrs. Kim laughed.

Korn, grinning mischievously, spun in circles, arms wide. "Let them fly! I'm practicing my chef's knife skills… with air!"

Nova and Lusi followed behind, juggling beach bags and giggling at Korn's antics.

Karan sighed, leaning against the car. "I can't believe I agreed to this," he muttered.

"You need this, Karan," Lusi said, elbowing him gently. "You're working too hard. Besides, who doesn't love sand in their shoes and sunburned noses?"

He rolled his eyes, but inside, he was smiling. He had to admit, there was something refreshing about being away from the clatter of knives, the hum of orders, and the unrelenting rhythm of the restaurant.

Funny Family Moments

Korn ran past, carrying a sand bucket filled with seawater. "I'm making the ultimate seafood stew, just for you, Karan!"

Karan crouched, inspecting the "stew," only to jump as Korn splashed water in his face. "Korn! You're going to ruin my shoes!"

"Shoes? Who needs shoes on the beach? Freedom, Karan!" Korn declared, arms raised like a victorious warrior.

Mr. Kim chuckled, shaking his head. "You two are worse than a storm in a teacup," he said, handing Karan a towel.

Lusi giggled, capturing the scene on her phone. "This is going to be a viral moment someday — 'Chef Karan vs. Brother Korn: The Sand Battle.'"

Karan groaned but couldn't stop laughing, as Korn tackled him into the soft sand. "I surrender!" Karan shouted, brushing sand off his arms.

Nova leaned over, smirking. "You're really letting him win, you know. I think he enjoys seeing you flustered."

Karan shook his head, still chuckling. "It's chaos… pure chaos."

Quiet Reflection Amidst Laughter

After a few hours of sandcastles, frisbee, and laughter, Karan walked a short distance away from the group, the waves lapping at his feet. His thoughts drifted, as they always seemed to, to **Arthit**.

He shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. *He probably doesn't even think about me now. Or maybe he does…* The memory of the kiss, the confession, and the struggle from that night still lingered like an uninvited shadow.

He focused on the rhythmic sound of the waves, letting the ocean wash over his tension. For a brief moment, he allowed himself to imagine — not a restaurant, not a career, not even a goal — but **Arthit standing here beside him**, the sun glinting off his hair, the playful teasing smile that had driven him crazy that night.

Shaking his head, Karan chuckled quietly. *No. Focus on now. Enjoy the beach. Don't think about him.*

A Splash of Mischief

Meanwhile, Korn had other ideas. Spotting Karan lost in thought, he crept behind him with a small water pistol. "This is payback for all the times you beat me at taste-testing!"

Before Karan could react, a jet of water hit his back, sending him sputtering and spinning around. "Korn! You little—"

Korn laughed hysterically, spraying more water as Karan lunged for him. Soon, it became a full-blown **water battle**, with Nova and Lusi joining in, squealing and dodging the sprays. Even Mr. Kim got caught in the crossfire, laughing heartily as he tried to shield himself with a beach towel.

Karan, soaked and laughing, finally tripped into the sand with a dramatic thud. "I surrender! Truce! Truce!"

Korn ran over, offering a triumphant high-five. "Victory is mine!"

Karan groaned, shaking sand from his hair, but the smile on his face was uncontainable. "Fine… fine. Enjoy your victory, little tornado."

Sunset Calm and Private Moments

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold, the family settled on a blanket, sharing snacks and stories. Karan leaned back, watching Korn bury Nova's feet in sand as she shrieked and protested.

Mrs. Kim chuckled, offering Karan some freshly cut fruit. "You're quieter than usual, dear. Thinking about your dishes again?"

Karan smiled, taking a bite. "Always. I can't help it."

Mr. Kim ruffled his hair. "Just don't forget to enjoy life, too. Cooking is passion, yes, but laughter, family… that's fuel for the soul."

Karan nodded, the warmth of his family surrounding him. But in the back of his mind, **a small ache lingered** — a memory of someone who didn't belong here, yet had left an imprint he couldn't shake.

---

A Glimpse of Tension

As the family laughed and played, a car drove slowly along the coastal road. Inside, a familiar figure observed the Kim family from a distance. Arthit's gaze lingered on Karan, the same magnetic pull as before, the same intensity, the same mixture of longing and frustration.

Arthit's thoughts were careful, measured. He watched **the laughter, the playful chaos, the warmth of family**, and felt a pang of something he could neither control nor admit.

*Still… he's mine,* Arthit thought quietly. But for now, he stayed in the shadows, letting Karan enjoy this brief freedom from ambition, responsibility, and the complications of their past encounter.

A Playful Twist

Back on the beach, Korn suddenly turned to Karan with a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hey! Let's bury Nova in the sand again!"

Karan groaned, shaking his head. "Why do I even let you win?"

"Because you love it secretly," Korn said with a sly grin.

Karan laughed, chasing his younger brother along the shoreline, the sound of waves mixing with their laughter. For the first time in weeks, **he allowed himself to just be happy, just be present** — even if only for a fleeting moment.

Yet even amidst the sand, laughter, and playful chaos, Karan's mind flickered once more to Arthit. That **one night, one kiss, one confession** — it had not left him. And somewhere deep inside, he knew that **their story was far from over**.
