Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: Airabel (2)

"Eh? You mean she actually took the bait!" The familiar, daily bicker of side conversations continued.

"Hey guys focus we're on duty now remember?" said one of the soft-spoken members of the group.

Then a pause: "Geez, this is like waiting for I tell ya!" said one of the roughed-up shirtless men, pulling up his chest dramatically. "We We need more breaks higher wages. We need justice! So,

Who's with me?"

Silence....before a flying object came hurling—BONK!

"Hey get back to work, men especially you Tobaine."

The low-gruffled voice barked out from the warehouse pass.

It was the Lieutenant Shean Sawyer. The rest of the men laughed, save for Tabrine himself who was still growling, but trying to hide the growing smirk creeping up on his face.

As they continued their work in the background. Ricyen or often nicknamed Riven,

Sela's fiancé-to-husband was diligently at work.

He was trying to work off a over due guild-loan, the other day he was at the guild and the receptionist (Guenelda) informed him of the annual guild taxes deductions especially for those who already owed minor or major debts.

Thus after just almost a whole half-week, he finally landed on this as gig at least.

"Howlonghasit been?, almost2 months now barely. Gosh this is hard I wonder if they ever actually pay minimum wage here.

Well this was in only spot open apparently according to the warehouse guy. Even those other guys said something about a raise. Huh, wonder if that's even possible I mean I don't even know who's the boss around here."

Just then Beaver—a shorter and wiry co-worker came up to him blocking the sunlight and casting his shadow upon him.

His hair swayed lightly in the light breeze, As Beaver sat arcoss from him Riven heard, "Hey there, enjoying the view of the sea or too deep into it already?" Riven almost ignored him in his non-response still pondering if he'd still have good money leftover if he did this job and probably another one that Involved some farming or whatever, then a thought came to mind.

"If i calculate the margins of my money going to tax and—to sela then maybe even on baby clothes, oh! Of course I'd still have to pay that clergy for the Baptism..."

"Hey... Hello anyone in there?" Beaver gave Riven a slight kick on the side of the foot. Riven, however remained unresponsive

"Is this guy for real?" beaver muttered, squinting his eyes. Beaver waited a moment looking back at the shorelines the many people there in a rush.

The dock's has always had this much activity but only in the summer's.

Beaver then looked back once again before closing in on Riven's ear. "Hey! get up outte your head!"

Riven's train of thought snapped, looked around

"Oh Beaver, hey there sorry, just got lost there for a second were you saying something?"

Beaver paused by the almost sheer audacity but smirked nonetheless, "unimpressed"

"What?" Riven replied confuse by beaver's weird remark.

"Nothing. Anyways what were you even thinking about since it distracted you enough not to hear me ."

Beaver said while Crossing his arms around his knees in a comfortable position,

"Riven what is wrong?"

Suddenly, the noise of the daily bustle and horns of approaching maritime vessels gradually faded into the background. The docks themselves seemed to slow. The murmurs of passengers and bystanders dwindled, saved for loud blares and seguls chipping in the air.

Riven Exhaled tiredly "Wrong? Beaver I'm alright, actually just remind me How much do we make around here again?"

Beaver thought for a min then looked back at Riven, answering with a shrug: "I don't know it depends really..."

"Is that a joke?"

"No... maybe but it more like money a suggestion sometimes you earn it or not it's random here." As the scene Continued After there was a brief moment of silence that fell between them both. Whilst working Riven would occasionally sigh. The memory of the of debt lingering like an annoying phantom.

("I'm starting to think this 'adventuring' guild stuff is a scam.") He thought, On the other hand Beaver sat next to him watching the secenry from all corners.

Guess it's that season isn't it the seguls are more active then I'd anticipated. Maybe they were startled or migrating this winter season...ouff hold on wait? is this why they're stealing all the sardines!

Beaver quickly took some stone- jagged rock of reddish tint and threw several of them at the four seguls that stole river fish from the two people who were there fishing.

() Beaver continued to contemplate with his newfound "revalation." Taking a closer look he noticed Riven's hair always overshadowed his eyes and the rest of his face—mostly on the right side.

Then it hit him what if Riven was suffering a magical scar that needed to be healed thus he came here for extra cash for it.

He clasped his hands together in resolution, thinking he'd already figured out Riven's "secret."

Meanwhile Riven was still partly scrubbing and partly surveying the [area] considering following up with asking the dockmaster...

Or as Beaver and other workers called him, captain. (Might need to rethink this job though... seriously this is definitely one heck of a start to it though.) Just then he pulled out 3 of his fingers on his left hand and started counting backwards: 10, 9, 8... maybe 7 yeah between those two.

(If I'm right then I should expect 8-7 months of being stuck here... no that can't be I need to make time for her too, the least I could I mean we haven't even done much together these past few months.)

Riven scratches the back of his head. Finally noticing Beaver's focused gaze.

"The hell's up with him?) Just then Beaver muttered "that scar!"

"huh? did i do something wrong?" River stated half expecting another spike. Then Beaver repeated more direct this time: "I meant to say where'd you get the scar on the covered up half of your face."

"Oh that's just when been there maybe I forgot about it, I mean it's an old scar anyways. And frankly—" He said with a slight pause looking down: "I don't think I'd want to remember anyways." Riven then looked up ahead,at the horizon where the clouds were clearing out.

"Huh? What's over there."

Beaver said as he took a glance in the direction Riven's head was leaning towards.

Admist the awkward salience, Riven let out a sneeze as he then leaned back

"Y'know I never properly thanked you for getting me this job even though The only thing they pay here is properly Some grilled fish and, probably some smoked bird."

Beaver then got up from his spot, "hey c'mon we still have more work to do." River grabbed on his extended hand, a bit confused and disoriented from sitting in one place for so long.

"Whatta mean? wasn't I doing my job just now."

"No and yes but you need money asap right?" Beaver responded looking around "you see that huge passing ship? ... That's business right there. And where we could make the most money or haul"

Riven considered it for a moment before realizing.

"Wait wouldn't that be just Petty theft or something?"

"Relax it's alright I promise, as a Matter of fact the lieutenant should be calling hands on deck for extra worker's."

He turned back with a slight smile at the thought. "It's the real Scavenger work you're going to be doing from now on."

He said before spitting into the concrete slab just near the Trench of the Coastaline they're already passing by.
