To anyone else watching, Tom's heartbroken expression looked completely different.

A trump-card move powerful enough to let a first-year wizard wipe out that many eight-eyed giant spiders? It screamed "one-time-use emergency item" that probably came with nasty side effects for the user.

So Firenze, who had been ready to hold Tom accountable, immediately dropped the idea. "This was our oversight. We should have culled the excess Acromantulas sooner. It won't happen again."

The centaur understood the situation perfectly. Centaurs might call themselves wise beings rather than magical creatures, but the truth was they couldn't stand against wizards. And right now they were basically guests in someone else's forest. Tom had wrecked a chunk of the woods, sure—but he'd also kept three young witches and wizards from getting hurt or killed. If any of them had died, the Forbidden Forest would never know peace again. Even if the attackers had come for the spiders, there was no guarantee they wouldn't have turned on the centaurs next.

"We'll handle the cleanup here," Firenze offered.

[?]

Tom gave the centaur a puzzled glance, then shook his head.

[No need. I've got the cleanup covered.]

Before Firenze could argue, Tom hopped to the edge of the crater, let his tail dangle down, and gave the ground two light taps.

Under the stunned stares of Firenze, Hagrid, and Draco, the dirt at the bottom of the pit began to rise. Slowly, steadily, the massive hole filled itself in until the ground was perfectly level again. The only difference between this patch and the rest of the forest was how unnaturally clean the surface looked.

Tom wiped his forehead with the back of his paw—even though there wasn't a drop of sweat—and nodded, satisfied. Magic really is convenient.

Back in his old life he could have filled the hole too, but it would've meant running around at cartoon speeds hauling dirt bucket by bucket. This was way easier.

[All right, time to go find that unicorn!]

He gave Hagrid a friendly pat, nodded at Firenze, then teleported the whole group away in a blink, leaving the centaur standing alone and staring at the now-pristine patch of earth.

Right beside him, Fang—who had jumped out of Draco's arms at some point—looked around in total confusion: Wait… where'd my master go? How did everyone disappear? I didn't even get in the car!

[Snap out of it! Hagrid I can understand, but Draco, why do you look like you just saw a ghost?]

Tom reached up and flicked the blond boy lightly on the forehead.

"No—you just… how did you do that? A Repair Charm? But could a Repair Charm even fix something that bad? And why didn't you say any incantation? You didn't even pull out your wand. Wandless, wordless magic? Or was that the new casting method you used in class? But I didn't see you writing anything on your little board!"

[It's… kinda like a Repair Charm, yeah. As for the wand? Wands are just tools. My tail works better for something like that.]

A wand was an external object. His tail, on the other hand, was part of him. Sure, the thing had a rebellious streak lately, but it still understood exactly what he wanted.

Standard spells could be channeled through his tail if he felt like it, but he could also use it for the real stuff—the pure, "think it and it happens" kind of magic. The dirt in that crater had been blasted to ash by Taffy's firecracker; no normal Repair Charm could have fixed it.

"All right, you can grill him about the details later," Hagrid cut in, waving a massive hand. "Right now the unicorn is what matters. We know the person targeting them is somewhere along this path. We don't know who or exactly where, but if we keep following it we'll find them eventually. So stay sharp, everyone. Don't let them spot us."

Hagrid's face was dead serious.

"I, uh—"

Harry's eyes lit up. He pulled out his father's Invisibility Cloak, ready to sneak ahead alone. Before he could even finish the thought, Tom produced two familiar white sheets.

He tossed one to Hagrid.

[Here, throw this on. Guaranteed they won't see us.]

"?"

Hagrid and Draco both stared at the plain white bedsheet in complete confusion. If you're trying to hide, why not use something dark? A white sheet waving around in the middle of a pitch-black forest at night was basically a neon sign screaming look at me!

But before they could protest, Harry and the others had already ducked under their sheet. They'd seen Tom's weird inventions in action before. No idea how he did it, but once you were under that thing, you were invisible to the world.

Even the real Invisibility Cloak needed special materials. Tom's ordinary-looking bedsheets? Pure nonsense.

"Don't overthink it," Harry's voice floated out from nowhere. "Remember all the insane stuff Tom's done in class? If he says these sheets make us invisible, they make us invisible."

Hagrid and Draco blinked. Sure enough, Harry's voice had come from right in front of them, but they couldn't see a single person.

They exchanged a quick glance. For the first time, both the half-giant gamekeeper and the pure-blood heir from one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight felt like the world had gotten a little too strange. And the source of that strangeness was always the same blue cat.

Once they were convinced the sheets actually worked, there was nothing left to argue about. Draco couldn't find the second sheet on his own, so he ended up squeezing under the same one as Hagrid.

The next second, both of them vanished too.

"Everyone stay close!" Hagrid called out, then started down the path again. He couldn't see Harry's group anymore, so he kept talking to make sure they didn't fall behind.

His worry was unnecessary. Tom—now wearing a fresh little outfit—had already rounded up Harry and the others and was marching right behind the half-giant, keeping perfect pace.
